Speaking as contrarian why do we need a new 4" iPhone? Just to replace it for those who are die hards who want the original small form factor because the 5 is years old now? Cost considerations? People with small hands?

I'm sure there are those who never liked the larger form factor of the 6 and 6Plus but it seems like they are going to hype this and I am wondering what is the killer feature this small phone will have that the 6s and 6splus does not.

The biggest surprise Apple could unveil would be offering a 4.4" screen in the same case dimensions of the 5s or smaller.
I love the 5S form factor - more so then the 6/6s. I find the 5 to have more depth and holdability. Here's where Apple's thinness works against my wants and needs. I think my 6s is just too thin. I use a case to just make it less slippery and more holdable.

You're kidding right?

I tend to agree that the 6 seems to be too thin, but it's hard to tell since it's so much wider. I'd have to actually hold a 4" 6 to know for sure. The 5s is definitely a nice thickness, if it were a little lighter, balanced a little more evenly, and a little more ergonomic. I'm one of those who never got used to the hard edges. Holding the 5s and the original iPhone in my hand, there's no question the original iPhone was an amazing design.

The 4-inch iPhone 7 may be the best model to try out OLED screens, until the manufacturing bugs can be wrestled out. iPhones 7s, all OLED!

I agree, I have a Spigen thin fit hybrid case on my 6s it still keeps it thin but now it's easier to hold however my biggest complaint is the things just too tall and the side power button is the worse location for me. I may be the only one but if Apple does release the 5se I really need 128GB.

Everyone grabs a phone by its narrowest cross-section - across the sides. Very easy to touch the power button. No one should be complain about a power button on top - it is the least used function of the phone, tough to grab the iPhone by its top-bottom axis.

You do want the protruding lens?

I don't want the protruding lens - ever.

When there is a separate phrase, it is not a double-negative.

I SE what is happening.

I'm a Steve Jobs follower, so yeah my clairvoyance is impressive, definitely better than the new Apple followers
When's the worship service? I do find that the Jobsian dogma is much more conducive to our new-age lifestyle, while Cookers can only be described as heathens.

I hope Apple releases a 4" phone that looks this good. My next purchase will most likely be a 4,7" 6, 6S or 7, but I'd still like to see Apple making a modern looking 4" iPhone.

This is quite off topic... but why oh why does Apple insist on putting the camera on the corner? It's so easy to cover it. Nearly every other smartphone has moved to put it in the middle. Does Apple really care that much about being "different"?
While we're on this topic, I'd like to suggest that all smartphones move the camera to the side, which would discourage taking vertical videos.

Looks so dull !!! Can't believe the love for it. Looks like any other iPhone.

If they don't do something radical with the design this year, I'll be shifting to a cheaper, better looking and higher spec phone.

Why do you want all your music with you all the time? To brag? When are you gonna listen to all of the songs?
Stop being stupid.

I want all my music with me all the time not because I'm going to listen to every song during the day, but because I don't know what song I'll want to listen to during the day - nothing to do with 'bragging', it's just having more at your fingertips on the go with no constraints, better access to the content you've spent years collecting.

Even Apple acknowledged this with it's iPod Classic marketing "Everything in your pocket", you don't have to conservatively pick what you want to take with you since it's all going to be there to match whatever your mood is.

The downsides of limited storage and song choice are obvious, whilst having access to your entire library and content holds no disadvantage other than upfront cost. Not sure why I'm having to explain the advantages of more storage...

Whoever rendered this "concept" clearly thinks Apple are going to accentuate the part of the phone that HAS to be there, and they'd rather wasn't, which shows that these "concept" people are generally clueless, and don't take the time to ponder over the historical design hints and the "flow" of Apple design. Also, why would they go BACK to the iPhone 5/5S design features of having top and bottom panels like this? Before designing a "concept", sit down and do A LOT of research, and learn to distinguish the subtle patterns and evolution of Apple product designs before rendering these utterly inaccurate, silly "concepts", please.

You've completely mixed up two completely different generations of iPhone design, where you're breaking up smooth, elegant curves (6/6S gen) with the abrupt, sharp, hard lines of the 5/5S gen - that's so ridiculous, gimme a break :D

Those two volume (+) (-) buttons:

~1 You're going BACK in iPhone iterations - why? They're now elongated, smooth buttons.

~2 Even if they WERE going to do that, which they're not, they are FAR too thick in proportion to the edge profile of the body.

~3 Those buttons protrude FAR too much from the surface of the metal.

The designer seems insecure in their convictions in regards to which generation of iPhone they think Apple are going to use as inspiration - the confidence in this design is extremely weak indeed, with hints of sharp and soft curves contradicting one another all over the place. UGH.

Just... stop. We don't need your silly "concepts" - they're an embarrassment to you, and I hope you refund MacRumors their money!

So if Apple unveils the iPhone SE on March 21st wouldn't this be the same day that Apple released iOS 9.3? So then the iPhone SE could be shipped with 9.3 correct?

GRAMMAR

When there is a separate phrase, it is not a double-negative.

True enough, except that you've misquoted the original comment

"Don't want the protruding lens - never."

So, even if the meaning may have been clear, the grammar wasn't correct. OTOH, most other commenters probably couldn't care less-- or, come to think of it, if they thought about it, maybe they could care even less! :)

-------------------------------------

BACK TO THE SHOW

It's clear that these design differences are apparent only to those who have a deep intimacy with design and their iPhones. To many of us, they all look like just about the same... That is, they all look like...

iPhones!

FOR A REALLY NEW DESIGN

Now, if Apple really wanted to shake things up, they'd introduce the Apple Flip Phone... A retro design, but one that could borrow from the Apple Watch OS and add various Siri Star Trek communicator features.

They'd end the design doldrums in one swift stroke and open up an entire set of new smart phone features and capabilities-- there could be left-right flips, up-down flips, each with screens on both halves, each serving different purposes, providing multi-tasking-- an app in each half, widgets in one half, keyboard in one half, etc. by user choice.

No case needed with the right materials as the screen(s) would have built in protection.

"Beam me up, Scotty!" :)
