Have same issue, but I knew it going into purchasing due to the DXO review. Sucks, but luckily I don’t take very many low light shots.

Turn your CAPS lock off dude. All CAPS means you’re yelling.
[doublepost=1514512574][/doublepost]The reason has already been posted here. You’ll need to adjust your photographing technique.

Hello,

i have another problem with the "fantastic" iphone X cam: White eyes in all lowlight pictures even on people that are far away and not even looking directly into the cam.

On top of that this White Eyes also appear on low light videos in realtime on mulitiple people near and far away or going by! That is unbelievable garbage!

Whenever the flashlight is active some kind of realtime recognition of eyes is active in order to avoid red eyes. But it does not reduce the red eyes, it produces whites eyes instead all over the place!

Look at the attached pictures and the video (watch in Full Size 1080p), where you will see a lot of people changing their eyes to white dynamically) look at the guy with the white shirt and the jeans left side and the guy with the white shirt going through the picture:

Tomorrow i a have a spport call with apple, but i doubt they will recommend anything else than reinstallion or any similiar bullsh...

Any idea?

Thanx pondito from Munich / Germany

This problem is still real. It ruined a lot of my holiday photos. The only solution is to buy an iPhone 8 or 8 Plus, I guess, but I just can’t go back to the home button. I will try not to take many low light photos. It’s an absolute shame for such an expensive device.

I knew this would be a major problem and many people would come forward after discovering this flaw after the Xmas and New Year’s holidays. As suggested, iPhone 8/8+ would be the other option.

Do post what Apple says but I don’t think they are capable of fixing your problem unless there is a major iOS update that addresses this problem.

I returned my iPhone X after 3 weeks as I was deeply disappointed in the camera quality and went back to my iPhone 6S Plus that doesn’t suffer from these red/white eye issues.

I didn’t want to be the sufferer of such first generation product glitches. Chose 8 Plus for this year and enjoying life. They have almost similar camera and doesn’t come with such issues.

As expected the Apple call didn't bring any new information:

I had to restore my iphone X with itunes and then check again. I did that and we made new fotos/videos with still the same result of white eyes.

In parallel we took fotos with another iphone X with exactly the same White Eyes problem. We also made the same fotos with an Iphone 7 an the white eyes did not appear.

Very interesting:

We then took the same a low light foto/videos without the Lamp of Iphone X but with the lamp of the second Iphone X which we held beside the picture taking Iphone X (that means the same illumination of the video) we did not have the white eyes problem!

=> White eyes only appear when the Lamp of the Iphone is on! When the same lamp of an other Iphone x is used, the algorithm seems to be not active and we dont get White eyes!

=> it seems to be a software bug in the eyes recognition which creates white eyes on every detected pair of eyes when the lamp is on.

Next Week i have a date at the genius bar. I will further report.

I think there's not such algorithm automatically eliminating the red eyes issue. I think it's because of the less powerful led light in the iPhone X compared to others and the position of the flash. Sony Xperia phones also used to have a dim led light and also had this issue (I don't know about current xperia, but at least xperia z/z1/z2).

I'm still planning to buy an iPhone X to try it by myself and decide (I'll buy it second handed so I don't lose money). Can you try the slow sync flash? This new thing can lead to nice results when the subject is close, as the final picture is more natural and not that "flashed-like".

I don't understand what you mean with "less powerful led light in the iPhone X compared to others". Compared to all other Iphones i know this LED light is surely the strongest i have seen on an iphone!?

I would try the feature "slow sync flash" but could not find any camera option to activate this...?

In my quick tests, the pictures with flash from the iPhone X come out darker than in previous iPhones (6s plus and 7 plus tested) and also the ISO is higher and the shutter speed the same, so yes, the flash is less bright. I don't know, I thought there was an specific setting for the low sync flash, I'll pick my friend's iPhone and try to find it, maybe it's just by default, but I saw a test in phonearena.com and the image from the iPhone x was very nice (well exposed background compared to pitch black or almost in the other phones)

Slow sync flash is an automatic thing. No settings to turn it off or on.
The problem with the red eye is the position of the flash, basically in the same position as the lens allow reflected light to bounce back directly into the lens.
I noticed that might be a problem when I first saw pictures of the X. Any photographer would have seen that. It’s extremely rare that I use flash (I can’t even remember the last time, maybe even years ago) so for me it’s non-issue.

This is to be expected with the flash so close to the camera lens. Still, I would have expected that with all of Apple’s machine learning and object detection technology, they would have come up with a software fix to automatically detect and correct the red/white eyes.

Craziest thing is my iPhone X camera has blue dots. I’m already on one replacement. I’m debating 8 plus. What you guys think

All cameras, even dslrs and film cameras, do that to some extent or other. It’s caused by light reflecting off the internal elements of the lens. Anytime you, especially in lower light, and have “pinpointed” light sources (like street lamps, light bulbs etc) shining into the lens, especially at an angle, you can get those reflections.
Similar to lens flare with a similar cause.

Well if that’s the case, why would a Apple senior advisor say that’s a defect and shouldn’t be happening. I mean, it’s nevwe happened on previous iPhones..

Although Lens flares and red eyes aren’t new in terms of photography but the problem of red eye seems to have exaggerated on the iPhone X thanks to the camera lenses and the flash being that close to each other. It’s definitely a hardware design issue. I’m just amazed that such an obvious use case wasn’t picked up in their testing. Or they might know and decided to release the device anyway.

Hi all,

Stumbled upon this forum and this thread and wanted to give my experience with my iPhone X camera.

I brought it a couple of months back, noticed straight away photos were not as good as my iPhone 7 Plus in all circumstances, natural day light, low light etc.
I decided to book an appointment at my local Apple store to get someone’s opinion. The guy I seen and his colleague both experienced the same issue I was, they put it down to a possible software problem and to wait for an update. So I went home and compared it to my iPhone 7 Plus, which is producing much better results. A week later I update to iOS 11.2.2 and no difference what so ever. I decided I o go back to the Apple and without any questioning or wanting to see examples of the issue I have been experiencing then just gave me a new phone.
Yes you probably know what’s coming next....no difference with the camera issue!!!

The iPhone X seems suffer big time with taking photos indoors, they are out of focus and in most cases have a horrible blurriness to them. Outside photos aren’t so bad but still not the quality I expect from a £1000 phone!

I’m obviously VERY frustrated and not sure where I stand now, will Apple fix this? Can they fix this is the big question. I will leave some expamples of what I am trying to get at. Would love to know your thoughts/advice.

-Jake

Your 1st and 4th images were out of focus. The blinds were in focus way behind the subject in image 1 and in the 4th image the girls sleeve was in focus. Sometimes you need to tell the camera where to focus by just touching it.

The other images were pretty acceptable for a camera phone

Try to switch to jpg instead of heic. I find a little more detail and no compatibility issues.

Okay I will give it a go! How do I do that?

Yes iPhone 8/8+ is much better option I moved back into iPhone 6S+. Do what I did, I let Tim Cook know via Twitter whether he read it I don’t know but I’ve heard he reads everything. So everyone should forward your issue directly to him so he knows they need to fix it by moving the flash as far away as possible from the lens to avoid red eye this is photography 101. We don’t want a 6”5 inch iPhone X with the same problem and the led/flash placed between the other two lenses like a traffic light again.

His Twitter handle is @tim_cook

Hopefully get gets the message and they do whatever it takes to fix that issue especially on the 6.5 inch version, I can’t believe it slipped by the first time.
