You mean Reddit allowed his app to access the APIs for free?

There‘s no “leeching” here, it’s not a torrent file leeching someone’s copyrighted material.

Reddit knew their app was ****, so allowed others to access their API, win win.
There app is fine, millions of users have no issues with it. until the Apollo whine fest, I didn't even know the Reddit app was apparently crap. Leech Apollo has lots of money to pay back from subs they can't provide.

Most of us do get it, basically Reddit weighed how many users Apollo was bringing in versus how much they cost them in missed advertising and upselling. I get it, some people really loved some of these 3rd party apps, but at the end of the day it was a business decision for Reddit. I don't disagree that they could have given Apollo more time, but even if they did would that change anything?
It looks like we’ll never find out now and that‘s the issue, all they had to do was work with 3rd party devs.

Instead, they effectively gave them 30 days notice.

Apple is worth billions upon billions...Reddit is not.

I don't care about Apollo and neither does 99% of other Redditors.

Indeed, it is just a vocal minority.

People were going to “cancel” Netflix and Twitter, and it appears both companies are doing better after getting cancelled.

Twitter is now breaking-even instead of being unprofitable and Netflix has more users after banning account sharing.

So because you don’t care, it’s not an issue?
Yes. I, along with 99% of other Redditors annoyed they can't access their favorite subreddit because Mods are holding it captive. I hope Reddit takes action soon and forcibly removes said Mods and restores the community. Powertrip mods can go elsewhere where they can feel special.

Funny you should mention server costs. You don’t think Reddit has server costs to bear?

As much as I disagree with a lot of sh*t Reddit does as a big corporation I don’t condone the way Apollo CEO marketed himself as the one standing for the masses. He got API for free for years and made money off of Reddit’s platform but suddenly the thought of losing his company cuz he has to pay for stuff and he crumpled like a piece of paper.

The only valid points Apollo CEO made in his rant that are fair are requiring more time to implement changes and better API pricing and countering the outright lies from Reddit. He’s no saint but the media ate it up cuz it makes your a good story.
He’s not a CEO.

It’s just him as a dev and a guy he employs part time to work on the server(s).

Comparing Reddit to Facebook would be a more apt comparison. People share content but it is mostly something they aren’t creating. But Reddit should definitely compensate the mods depending on the size of the subs.

Perhaps, but Facebook created a novel system to connect people with friends and relatives. That's what's unique to them: the "social graph". If not for that, everyone could easily leave and reconnect elsewhere.

What has Reddit created, beyond the initial platform for people to create their own topic-based groups and post information and comments? One could argue that everything they've done over all these years has only made the site worse (invasive advertising, algorithmic timelines, user-hostile web design...) They've done the negative things Facebook is known for without even trying to do anything beneficial for users.

Now you can argue that their lack of profitability is a reason behind that, but I would argue that their lack or vision and talent is what has resulted in their lack of profitability.

How much was Apollo paying Reddit for API access?

You seem to know the answer, so please let us know
Nice deflection there.

I‘ll ask again…

Have you got any evidence whatsoever to support your claim, that the Apollo dev was “Making millions of $ while paying $0?”

50,000 SUBS at $10 A YEAR = $500,000 YEAR.

8 YEARS.... Take away some fees and fun stuff and its...millions...

Now, again, how much does Apollo pay Reddit directly? I'll wait

Then stop hanging out in general interest subs.

None of the subreddits devoted to specific technical areas that I participate in are like that. Generally, they're populated by people with an interest in the subject matter and a willingness to help others.

It's like saying a particular city must be awful because you had a bad meal at a restaurant there once.
Exactly I never have a problem with mine. The one Orville one had crap mods, but someone made a new one, and there was a mass exodus

I’m not here to debate Reddit’s financials or how they run their business with you. It’s just that the comparison was lacking in one crucial detail to make it just.

Apollo's hired PR agency spinned it really well for the most drama possible with the media outlets. That's all this is at the end of the day.

Nope, they’re still not making any money.

and you could argue that less users coming in via 3rd party apps=less revenue potential.

Well the API changes/charges haven't even been implemented yet, how the heck could they make money? Sure they might miss potential revenue from 3rd party app word of mouth, but that all goes into the calculations and bean-counting Reddit did to arrive at this decision. I have no idea if they will become profitable, only time will tell.

If there is a viable business model then these devs will figure it out and re-release. If there is no viable business model, well that's how capitalism works. I wouldn't expect Reddit to just give them handouts, although I still agree that 30 days was a bit too drastic.

This is my issue personally, I can't access my subreddits for the past 2 days and now they are talking about an indefinite blackout. What's going to happen to some, maybe many, of these subreddits is they are going to be replaced by newer subreddits, that's if Reddit themselves don't simply remove the moderators.

People are either really dumb to see the bigger picture or just plain unwilling to admit it as they don’t want to be perceived wrongly. Neither is good!

What the heck are you guys talking about "Apollo CEO" and "Apollo PR team"

It's one guy lol.
I’ve said the same thing on another thread on this forum. Apollo owner is a multi-millionaire, you can choose to not listen to facts in order to preserve your “small guy getting crushed” narrative but that doesn’t mean it’s not facts. I’ve honestly never seen the internet so riled up between a billionaire and a multi-billionaire before. It’s honestly wonderful display of craft played by Apollo’s PR.

If he’s responsible for running a company then he is the CEO. Look it up!
Nope.

A CEO is the Chief Executive Officer.

This title separates the person from the other Executive Officers.

An example would be Chief Technology Officer.

No other employees?

Then you’re not the Chief Executive Office of anything.

You‘re welcome.

Reddit, Like Twitter is user based. Without these users, Reddit will be just like a newspaper that no one reads.

Oh, so Apollo had 50,000 paying subs from day one?

Right, gotcha.

As to how much he paid for their API, he paid exactly what they asked of him for the whole 8 years.

Again, you’re welcome.
