It's on Apple's website (5-core graphics), so, it's not the same as the 4-core GPU on the non-pro iPhone 13:

This is a nice bonus, they could have just put the 4 Core GPU A15 in, but put in the 5 core GPU instead. A lot of people play games on the Mini so this will slightly improve performance in this regard. This little Mini 6 is more powerful in every way than the Ipad Pro 2020 !!!

The amount of RAM inside dictates when Apple will stop supporting the device! 4GB RAM is now the bottom hierarchy in the cheap mobile devices. You can keep yours if you like but I do not want to have something like this that will be obsolete in a few years from now!
Pretty sure that isn't true.

This is somewhat disappointing. iPad apps, and iPadOS itself, are going to target the lowest common denominator for specs which is currently the base iPad and 3GB of RAM. iPads aren’t limited by CPU but they are limited by RAM (and iPadOS’s lack of virtual memory). iPad Pro users were howling for more advanced features this past spring only to be bitterly disappointed with such incremental updates out of iPadOS 15. The iPad will never see professional level software or certain missing features if the most popular model is hobbled by inadequate RAM. Example: Adobe won’t add HDR merging of raw files in Lightroom for iPad because, while the recent pros have ample memory to merge multiple high-megapixel shots together, the base model iPad does not and they want feature parity for all devices.
This is the reason why I went for a MacBook Air and never updated my 2nd Gen IPP.
I was so hoping the M1 arrival would mean some parity with apps across the range but there's no way it's coming - I wanted Final Cut Pro on the iPad - not gonna happen, so now it's a glorified tv on a stand, and I will buy the mini and use it for on the go stuff and backing up. the size makes it super fun to carry around and use for video chats.

I've had to accept that the iPad will never be my 'go to' device for my work. For illustrators I'd imagine it's a dream.

One thing I don’t see mentioned anywhere is that the new iPad Mini does not have ProMotion. That is a dealbreaker for me. So lower screen refresh rate compared to the Pro models that have it. The Mini does have higher ppi though at 326 I believe vs. 264 for the other iPads.
Only 30hz, no 120hz aka “pro motion” screen refresh.

It’s fantastic but they have to discontinue Lightning completely now. I can’t be bothered carrying around a lightning cable for my iPhone and my AirPods and a separate usb c for my iPad. Doesn’t make sense.

This is the best redesign for the iPad mini that was expected alongside the redesigned iPad Air in 2020. Glad I waited I had the OG iPad mini then 2nd Gen skipped the 3rd and 4th and am upgrading from the 5th Gen. Been a long time coming and expected it to be a smaller version of the iPad Air 4, no regrets I went in for a SG 64GB Wifi as I have cloud storage and an external USB-C SSD if I need extra storage if needed when travelling. What was also a nice surprise was the led flash at the rear.

I suspect the iPad Air will be updated in October as Apple is trying to space out supply and demand plus the back to school ends late September which has the iPad Air 4 on sale, it would complicate matter plus it seems like Apple is trying to clear as much stock as possible. Seriously this is a single handheld iPad that is lighter compared for most of the bigger options and USB-C. Who cares if it has 4GB of RAM the previous generation has 3GB and it’s going strong. One of the big reasons I upgraded was for the landscape speaker layout and larger screen squared-off design everything else is fluff. The price bump to 256GB is a joke and Apple knows it. Would I have preferred 128GB sure but Apple has to save it for an update along with OLED.

These forums are like a giant Rorschach test for who I would feed first to the sharks were I stuck on an overcrowded lifeboat.
Most forum members expectations are not aligned with the general Apple customer I would just ignore it. The iPad Pro with an A10 has 4GB of RAM and even after so many years it does not feel slow and this is coming from a relative who has one. Most people who purchase iPad mini do so without the intent (there are a few special people who will try and complain) to do iPad Pro or larger screen tasks. I use my mini for surfing safari, videos, email and other basic tasks along with office activities. If I want to use the pencil for note taking or doodling then the option exists but don’t see me doing so. Portability was key and Apple nailed it, just curious to see how it feels in my hand size.

You are carrying 3 devices. You can’t carry two cables?

But, but, the new one only has 4GB of DRAM and is already obsolete and you’re a sucker if you buy one because it won’t last 15 years…

/s
I see your “/s” these iPad’s will be long updated by then and the battery will probably require replacing before the 4GB RAM ever becomes an issue for most.

Next iPad mini update will be OLED, 128GB base storage maybe USB4 and the other usual CPU upgrades. Maybe 6GB of RAM but even if it does not it would not be a dealbreaker for most.

I suspect Apple may finally transition the iPhone line to USB-C in 2022 as it was working through the iPad lineup excluding the iPad 10.2” which will probably receive it in 2022 or may just get discontinued it’s a sore thumb product that I understand where it fits but is the stepchild of the family.

Most of these guys complain for the sake of complaining. Many have no clue what the iPad uses RAM for and that a decent portion of it is used for video ram. A smaller screen at a lower refresh rate is going to use less video ram than the larger iPad Pros pushing more pixels, with HDR, up to 120Hz. The high-end iPad Pros going up the 16GB is new territory, but that doesn’t mean 4GB is measly for the Mini. For most of the things people will use the new Mini for, they will not see the slightest constraint due to RAM for several years.

Seems like these complaining users are just hardware specs junkies, the iPad mini announcement was the best thing from yesterday’s event, even if it is not updated for the next two years it will hold up well considering the last one design was in production for close to a decade.

😮 Does that mean iMessage/SMS won't go to cellular iPad from cellular Watch?
It goes because your iPad has cellular but it has nothing to do with your watch, which also get iMessage because it has cellular as well but they don't work in tandem.

I had 2 iPad before this Air 3 I'm using and both had 5 years of usage with up to date OS before I sold them to another person. This is pure BS.

I’m interested in the iPad 9, but have big concerns with ram.

I know iPadOS doesn’t have true multitasking, so how important is to have more ram? I don’t know.

One thing is for sure, the base iPad will get a minimum of 4 iOS updates, just like my iPad 6, and maybe even 5.

But will performance be good in 4 years? Is it more important the A13 or the ram to keep performance good in 4 years?

4GB is barely enough for shipped iPadOS but will be a pain point for future iPadOS updates. For $649 for the 256GB it should come with 8GB but that would cannibalize the iPad Pro but at least compromise on 6GB. Greedy penny squeezing Tim Cook ruining new product launches.
I've had no problems with updates on any of the iPad versions I have had, and all but a couple have less than 4GB of RAM. (and one of those couple is the new one I just bought.)

It'll be fine in 4 years, though probably not 6. I actually still have a 2nd gen iPad that still works, though it hasn't got updates for quite some time.
