router

whats the best router out there? recommend me a good cheap one please im kinda new to this sort of thing:)

congrats on getting a great deal :D

as for a wireless router, you don't need to get apple's airport extreme. any wireless-g or wireless-n router will work fine. personally, i have a linksys wrt54g wireless-g router and it's great.

You can get the WRT54G at Bestbuy for 50 bucks, but you might be able to find it online a little bit cheaper.

i want to see a picture of the receipt. i doubt that this actually happened. if it really did then good for you, but if i didn't shame on you.

I didn't read all this thread-were you looking for a wired or a wireless router? If wired, go with Linksys. If wireless, I'd go with Apple or Linksys, as Apple's unit seems to be very compatible (and has some neat features), and Linksys is generally a safe bet too.

I've been using a wired Linksys router for years and love it.

Yeah, less than three days is aweful quick for shipping even if you are in CA.

Espeically since your original invoice said this: Ships by: May 22 - May 24
Delivers by: May 24 - May 31

What gives?

You know I was starting to think this thread was a little on the fishy side  . It just seems too good to be true. If I could see a picture of the Macbook, receipt, and your username on a piece of paper next to everything than you got me, but this speedy shipping is starting to confirm my suspicions  . But I wanna' believe, I really do lol.

Obviously, the price is fishy

but I can say that I have had super-fast shipping by Apple, too. I ordered a refurbished iPod and got it two days later despite the shipping date saying 4 weeks later.

This (a quick delivery) isn't all that hard to find believable. I just ordered a refurb in the early AM of Thursday, May 17th. Here's what Apple said about shipping originally:

Ships by:
May 24 - May 29

Delivers by:
May 29 - Jun 4

However, Apple actually ended up shipping it out the same day, and it was picked up by FedEx that same day (at 11:32pm). It's now in route from Sacramento, CA to my location in the Mid-Atlantic Region, scheduled to be deliver by FedEx by Wednesday, May 23rd. Judging from my previous experience with shipments via FedEx cross-country, there's a very good chance it will actually be delivered to me on Tuesday AM.

Why is the shipping time so hard to believe? The refurbs are in their warehouse are ready to go. They've been QAd, boxed, etc.
I ordered mine on a Tuesday morning. It shipped from California that day and arrived at my home in Alberta on Friday of the same week. That was after being routed through Memphis, which is nowhere on the road between California and Alberta. That probably added a full day to shipping time.

yeah a lot of ppl dont believe it too..but once i have internet ill try to take a pic of all the proofs! still cant believe myself...shipping was fast ordered tuesday morning..shipped wednesday arrived friday..product was from sacramento and im from the oc =)

In theory you can get 70-100 feet indoors. But don't count on it in the typical home. The more walls and floors the signal must pass through, the less range. Denser and more solid walls = lower signal.

Can you adjust the antenna(s), or move the wireless router to a different location in the room upstairs? You may be able to find a "soft spot" to beam the signal through. Walk through the house to different location with the Macbook and you might get an idea of where the signal is strong and get an idea of how well the signal is traveling through the house.

Adding a higher-gain antenna to the router is one option. The Linksys WRT54GL and many other wireless routers can use 3rd party firmware, which allows you to boost the output. What model # Linksys do you have?

yeah a lot of ppl dont believe it too..but once i have internet ill try to take a pic of all the proofs!

what is wrong with the above sentence....   WHEN you have the Internet????

That is like when I tell telemarketers that "I am sorry, I don't own a telephone" and just sit and listen to their response...which is usually silence!:D
