so i'm assuming XFX HD-489X-ZSFC will not work on the mac from what i read. Can anyone make a rom? I don't know it maybe easier to spend the extra money and just get a 4870 :( at least it's guarenteed to work.

Can anyone post current cards links that have roms that do work, traversing the site and the web gives me a headache? Most of those old cards are not being developed anymore. I would like to buy a 4870 or 4890, doesn't matter.

wtf u talkin bout?

To Cindori and Peloche-

You guys are awesome! I received my XFX HD-489X-ZSFC ver 1.6 and flashed it using ATIFlash Tool 1.2. The included ROM for XFX worked beautifully!

>

profit

I got an XFX 4890 -ZDFC and tried about 8 different ROM variations. Some got close, showing the desktop a few moments before scrambling the video. Now it appears I've messed up my backup copy of the original ROM. Anyone with a -ZDFC model XFX card please post or pm me the ROM? Thanks
No longer needed- I fixed the ROM and now have the -ZDFC working, QE enabled. Fan is fairly quiet, everything looks good so far.

Hi there!

Thanks to this great forum and excellent contributors (Cindori, Netkas, The Rominator, Pipolo to name just a few) I have been able to successfully:

- create an EFI ROM for and flash a SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X HD 4870 2GB GDDR5 PCI-E http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?psn=000101&pid=217
- have Mac OSX 10.6.2 boot with a SAPPHIRE HD 4870 X2 2G GDDR5 PCI-E http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?psn=0001&pid=180 (ID = 0x94411002) with the help of the Natit injector (for Sapphire 4870 cards) of Cindori's ATI Flashing Tool

However, there are still some problems / open issues for which I will need some help:

  • I can't seem to create EFI ROM('s) for the SAPPHIRE HD 4870 X2. When I follow pipomolo42's procedure on https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=7297669 I always get an error message. The procedure worked just fine for the ROM of my SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X HD 4870 2GB so I'm guessing the problem is related to the ROM('s) itself. Is there a way to create EFI ROM('s) for the SAPPHIRE HD 4870 X2 2G GDDR5 PCI-E? If yes, what is the procedure? Do I need to convert both ROM's or just one? If yes, which one? I've added the original ROM's to this post in case one of the pro's around here want to give it a try :D

  • Since I can't create EFI ROM's for the SAPPHIRE HD 4870 X2 I have installed Netkas's Natit.kext using Cindori's wonderful ATI Flashing Tool (thanks guys!). However, with the Natit.kext installed I'm having problems opening .jpg files (pictures) in both the Preview and iPhoto applications: When opening a .jpg file with Preview the app launches and opens the file but shows a blank window/image. In iPhoto, when I double click on a picture preview to open the picture in full view I also get no picture (but instead the list with previews remains visible), when I select a picture preview and go to "edit in full screen" iPhoto switches to full screen mode, shows the tool bars but does not show the picture (but a black screen instead), when I go into Faces mode to identify faces, the screens shows the square face boxes as if the actual picture is there but it's not (again, the list with picture previews remains visible with the square face boxes on top). As this is a major issue I can't really use the SAPPHIRE HD 4870 X2 under Mac OSX for the time being.

  • When running the QE_CI tester in the ATI Flashing Tool it seems QE is NOT enabled. This for both the flashed SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X HD 4870 2GB and the SAPPHIRE HD 4870 X2 enabled with the Natit.kext. Is this normal?

Any suggestion or help for the above will be highly appreciated! :)

Greetz,

Bruno

Tandori!! lol!!

no efi rom has been made for 4870x2. yet.

about the qeci issue. have you installed qeci patch?
btw this is what's causing white images.

Hi,

So no one can help me out with my ZWFL? Recap: I used The Rominator's ZWFL Rom and it workse fin on Mac OS X 10.6.2 --although doesn't support sleep mode--, but not on Windows/DOS --power connector error message at startup. I also tried making my own Rom using Pipomolo42's method but I failed.

I've posted my original Rom --on previous page-- so one of the geniuses around can have a look =)

Thanks a lot.
Ch.

Hi Cindori!

Yes, I did install the QE_CI patch using your ATI Flashing Tool (the one for 10.6.2), but this patch did not seem to work as it should then...:(
Can this patch be left after I remove the Natit.kext extension (which I did to use the single VPU and EFI ROM flashed SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X HD 4870 2GB) without causing any secondary problems?

What's the problem with the 4870x2 ROM's (why can;t they be modified to include the EFI part)?

Thanks in advance!

Greetz,

Bruno

because our efi research is based off a 4870 rom, which I can imagine does not look much like 4870x2. you are free to write a 4870x2 rom if you have the skills, but you can most probably not do it by following some guide for 4870 cards. QECI patch wont harm your system.

Has anyone tried a "Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB GDDR5 Vapor X PCI-Express Graphics Card" with SKU "11133-16-20R" using this tool?

Just spotted this is currently available in the UK, but haven't been able to get confirmation that it can be flashed successfully.

It's the one with DVI, HDMI, and VGA ports - ie:

http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?psn=000101&pid=216

Don't care about the latter, but dual monitor support is essential to me (single or dual link).

Cheers,

Jim

Bought a zwfl for testing purposes. Will report back

Hi Cindori,

Did you make some tests yet? Is there still hope for me or should I flash my 4870 ZWFL back with its original Rom and use it only for playing PC games?

Actually, I could go without Windows compatibility, but the fact that I need to shutdown my Mac every night as sleep isn't supported by Rominator's Rom --at least on my card-- is too "painful".

I'm also looking at the same card, would love some help on flashing it. Jim you got any idea where to source the power cables here in the UK?

HI CINDORI,

I Tried XFX HD-489X-ZSFC last night, and wouldn't fit in pc which was my first option of flashing there, so I put it in my Mac Pro with cables, and os x recognized it and everything.

However after 5-10 minutes Snow Leopard 10.6.2 would keep crashing on kernel panic, and I tried several times.

I took out the card, and snow leopard was still crashing on kernel panic, so zapped the pram, and the system finally acted normal again.

I'm just not sure if there is some incompatiblity or what happened, please advise. I might just return the card back, since it seems like a lost cause here and you have to jump through hopes. I thought it would be much simpler. I didn't even get a chance to flash the card.:(

what other cards you have

what revision is the ZSFC it should say on box somewhere, "made in china" and then "Ver. 1.6" or 2.0 or something

did you do anything to the card yet

I have stock nvidia 7300gt card .

As far as the revision Ver 1.6 under made in china
Model No: HD-489X-ZS
Part No: HD-489X-ZSFC

I wasn't able to flash it at all because the mac pro 1,1 kept crashing consistently. Since removing, and installing stock nvidia, after pram zapping, the computer was working fine overnight without a crash.

I did place stock nvidia in slot 2 and ati in slot 1. I only have a dell which the card will not fit in (go figure) and otherwise in mac keeps crashing:confused:

are you having displays connected to the 4890?? cause it shouldnt crash when just staying there.
are fans spinning on card?

also use 7300 in slot1 and 4890 in slot2

Display was connected to 7300. I of course got the mac pro pci-e cables, and attached to the card. I will see if it crashes again, when in other slot, hopefully doesn't mess up this macpro or i would be upset. :(

Cindori:

Here are some preliminary results. I followed your instructions and placed the xfx in mac pro (slot2), and then i waited 5-10 minutes, this time no crash.

Good, I flashed using your app, and the included rom (all went fine).
I tried to install QE/CI and the computer crashed. I then rebooted and installed QE/CI this time successfully. I zapped the pram, and then started up.

Card was recognized and tried some QE programs, no problems. I then downloaded and tested opencl demo, which ran fine.

To this point I have left on a little while to see if it crashes again. I used VGA/DVI connector on port 1 and it worked, driving my dell monitor. So far so good, but hopefully the crashes don't plague me again.

System profiler recognizes the ATI 4790, and seems to be okay so far.

vga..?
read "What works and what doesnt"
in 4890 thread in my sig...

gz if you get vga working stable, you'll be the first

Cindori,

I guess i'm a first then. Check the image below.

I read what you said was supported and not but wasn't going to let that stop me. Only problem is on boot, you have to move to nvidia, and then move the cable back to ati, but ati works for me as you can see on VGA, and stable.
