Poopdepoop, the ROM that you posted had a Mac-ified version included with Cindori's original flashing tool. Rominator made it, and since then Cindori and I have both verified that (to the best of anyone's ability to tell) it was Mac-ified correctly. Some people are getting it to work with their cards. Is there any chance that you got wires crossed or files confused somewhere, and that's not actually the ROM from the current card you have? Because if it is, I am totally at a loss - both as to why it is not working for you, and as to whether it's not working for me because I have the same problem you have or because I have a slightly different card from you...

I did manage to snag a ROM from 20 days earlier than that one. I'll attach a Mac-ified version of it here, give it a shot. But if the one you posted is absolutely for sure from your card, there's no reason this one should work. Meanwhile, I'm still hoping that there's a more recent ROM out there that will solve my problem... Justit? Any luck with dumping yours?

Cheers!

The rom I posted is from my current card. I never dumped the rom from my 1st card.

I will try the rom you posted tomorrow and let you know if it worked

hey guys... i'm *really* sorry if this is a stupid question... tried reading thru all the threads but couldn't find an answer...

my geforce 8800 on my mac pro 2007 died. cant' even get to grey login.

since i have no working vid card in the mac pro, am i still able to get a pc 4870 flashed and working?

it seems like one need a working card to be able to boot into mac, flashing the 4870, then it will work... (2 cards total). or to bootcamp into windows and flashing. but i dont' ahve those options.

do i need to borrow someone's mac pro vid card in order to flash a new pc 4870 properly?

or will i need to use a pc to flash the pc 4870 card, then put it into my mac pro?

anyway, if anyone could help that would be sweet. thanks in advance.. :)

Hi,

Sure, as long as the 4870 is flashable with the modified ROMS out there. (see the 4870 thread) You can do it in DOS on the Mac Pro, just do a search for instructions and to see if the card you have is one that others have used. If you have a PC around, you can use that in DOS to flash the card as well. (I did it this way as well).

If you are unsure about the pics, google part number to see real pictures

in your case that sapphire and it parts number both shows the same card as I'm using, aka "the golden card" since no problems or Rom variations have been reported for it. I'd grab one before it disappears.

Cool thanks :) I go order the golden card! :D

provided cables

hey, i'm back!

my 4890 arrived, and here is a picture of the cable it came with:

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/jdhorner/cable.jpg

(it came with two of those, actually)

based on that, is it easy to figure out what sort of cable/cables i need to hook up this new video card? (i have no idea what the names of the cables are called, but from what i read earlier, these won't work with a mac pro motherboard? also, i have to connect the power to the empty 2nd superdrive bay??)

for how to power from superdrive, see my 8800GTX thread

or just order apple motherboard cables, ati.com or ebay

I just wanted to thank you guys again for all your help. With all the data I've gleaned from this topic and the feedback you guys gave me, I ended up returning the 4670 and upping the ante to a HIS 4890 and figuring out which cables to go with to jack power from my second SuperDrive bay. Thanks again!

HIS Radeon HD 4870 iCooler x3

Hi everyone. I am new to this and have read all the pages and I am still not sure how to get my card working. I have HIS Radeon HD 4870 iCooler x3. Has the following ports x1 DVI x1 VGA x1 HDMI.

SJ2-17-6_300.jpg

Have installed the ATI Flashing tool. Installed Natit, trying all the options in the list and all i get is a blue screen. Have not even reached the stage of flashing the card. Maybe I have missed something?

If I ever reach the point of flashing the card the required rom is not in ROM.zip file. I understand I may need to make my own but again I am not sure how to go about this.

Please if anyone could help out it would be much appreciated.

Cheers

HIs Radeon HD 4870 iCooler x3 RV770

Thanks Cindori,

Attached zip file of the bin that GPU-Z created and included a screen shot.

Cheers

Modifying a rom

Could someone please point me in the right direction as to how I can modify the an original rom to work for Mac OSX?

Is this setup feasible?

I have a 30" Dell (2560x1600) main and 2 22" Dell (1920x1600) secondary monitors. I currently only use the main 30" with my stock GT120 in my 2009 Mac Pro quad.

I'm okay with the 30" being pushed by the GT120. I'm not a big gamer. I'd like to get the dual dvi out the back of the card that the 4890 has to keep things clean. Not a fan of mini-displayport (who is?).

It is hard to tell from this and other threads if a flashed 4890 supports driving two monitor displays.

Anybody running 2 dvi outputs to 2 displays? If so what is your resolution you are pushing?

Thanks,
Tim

my just-flashed 2x dual-link DVI 4890 currently drives two identical LG 21" monitors, at 1680x1050 each. (their native resolution.)

4890 in leopard:

1st slot dual link aka up to 30"

2nd slot nothing

4890 in snow leopard:

1st slot dual link aka up to 30"

2nd slot single link aka up to 24"

2nd slot single link aka up to 24"

Cindori, is there a way to tell what is running at single vs. dual-link connection? both of my monitors are using dual-link cables... but i guess it's possible for the video card to auto-downgrade to single-link? (didn't know if that was possible, since it's a different pin configuration)

no flashed 4870 or 4890 has ever had Dual Link on upper port

this is due to drivers in OSX

only way to know for sure is plug it into a 30"

XFX 4890 ZSFR Natit and ROM

So I gave up on my Sapphire 4870, picked up an XFX ZSFR from Best Buy on Cyber Monday.

I made the enclosed Natit which allowed me to flash the enclosed ROM onto the card, and it's working beautifully. The ROM came from the long 4890 forum post somewhere, I didn't make that - but Cindori, maybe you want to include the Natit and the ROM for this card in your tool?

Cheers

Thanks for the info jd.

I acquired a "XFX HD-489X-ZSFC Radeon HD 4890 1GB" card from Newegg (link is here). I've backed the ROM up with it installed in a PC, and have downloaded the XFXNew.ROM from a thread somewhere on the site.

Where I currently am stuck is waiting for parts to build some decent power cables. I have a 2009 Mac Pro so I'm going to use the main board power to connect to the XFX power inputs and do it right.

I'll post my results here once I'm able to get powered up. It looks like others are having success with this combo so I've high hopes.

When I had the card in my PC I jumped on a Team Fortress 2 server. Not even a hiccup at 1920x1200 max'd settings. Impressive. May have to BootCamp the Mac after this...

my just-flashed 2x dual-link DVI 4890 currently drives two identical LG 21" monitors, at 1680x1050 each. (their native resolution.)

ok, planning to update ATI Flashing Tool with latest flashing core released yesterday, but need people with 4870 and/or 4890 to beta test the new build, I no longer run my Mac Pro so kinda in the blind here. all you need to do is to try flash to PC bios and then check if card work, and then flash to Mac bios again.
shouldnt be any hiccups really, im not expecting anything to blow up, however don't want to release anything not tested.

if you're interested, pm.

I'm intrigued...flashing core? From where?

BTW..I was reading on the Apple boards that the 26OOxt firmware update doesn't run in SL, just Leopard. Has anyone tried this on 2600? Or is that where you got the flasher in the first place?

I am in NY and won't be near my Mac Pro for testing until 29th or 30th.

Flashing a Gigabyte Radeon HD 4890

Hey all,
I'm looking for a Mac ROM to flash my Gigabyte Radeon HD 4890 with. It has Qimonda memory chips. It says my current SSID is 21CB.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Happy Festivus.
