the pic looks right

thx

hi kbonnel,

Yeap it's the right 4890 one, poopdedoop's link is 4870.

In fact New Edition is a part of the commercial name for 4890:

http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?psn=0001&pid=277

But in fact there isn't any 4870 commercial name with "New Edition"

I'm seeing "xxxxxxxxxx" , should there be a download file attached ?

for the canadian consumer... :)

I was getting so frustrated seeing that my "only" option for any decent graphics card upgrade for my 2006 (1,1 Mac Pro) was over $400 on Apple's website (the Apple-supplied Radeon 4870).

Then I stumbled upon this thread (and the how-to "ultimate" thread), and I'm so excited I can barely post properly. ^_^

That being said, I'm in Canada, and cannot properly order from sites like Newegg without paying ridiculous importing/customs/duty fees. So we have sites like tigerdirect.ca and also a great local retail shop called Microbytes. From them, I've been able to find the following two cards:

Tigerdirect:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5210080&CatId=3669

Micro Bytes:
http://www.microbytes.com/computer/ordinateur/product_info.php?products_id=19507

As long as the price is under $300, I don't really care. My X1900XT card is starting to show its age, and is exhibiting odd graphics behaviors, so I want to replace it now before I'm surprised with black screens.

Do you think either of the above cards could be flashed in the way you describe here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/713428/ ?

And if so, is this the right kind of power cable you mentioned: http://www.microbytes.com/computer/ordinateur/product_info.php?products_id=24753 ?

I just didn't realize things could be easier AND cheaper than I had originally thought. I look forward to -any- info you can send my way. However, if this is redundant or completely n00b, I apologize in advance!

i would go for that xfx card
rom for similar is included in pkg.
if not work, we help you to make working one.

the cables you linked probably comes with the card. what you need is some extension.

wait until you have the card and then easily find out what and how much cable you need.

those instructions are correct.

on a side note
working on new version of ati flashing tool all day. it's going to be great

Just in case anyone else is following along, I found the same card at newegg.ca -- yup! It seems that have a Canadian equivalent store now!!

It's ordered and I can't wait for it to get here. :D

Will-do.

Awesome!
By the time this arrives, I'll have Snow Leopard installed, and your tool to make things a cinch. *crosses fingers*

I tend to jinx myself.

What do you think are the odds your gee-whiz awesome flashing tool will just work for the plausible nearish release of a 5870? Assuming ATI continues to deploy the ROM as they have previously done.

when apple releases a new ATI card, and someone dumps the rom, all we need is to figure out where efi is, then it's easy to make new roms

my app will probably work with any new ati cards, and if it doesn't, ill make sure it does. it's going to be really useful with the release of the new cards.
ideally, since 5870 is new, all models should be reference (except the vapor-x one), so chances are that the rom dump will be compatible from start (this is what we saw when the apple 4870 came). in that case, we could basically have modified PC cards up and running at the same launch day as the Apple card.

the new version of the app is exciting. I have a few things to finish though. this will be a feature update, focusing on new things. after this I'll focus on cosmetic issues for a while.

Hey!

Congrats on the coverage! You've made the big time. Now all I need is a 4890, your software, and I'll be good to go!

Thanks for all of your effort,
crash

Holy crap, the 5970 is like 4X faster than the 285/4890.

Can't wait until January 2010's "Ultimate Thread: 5970 in Mac Pro" after Apple releases the 5870 for its Gulftown MP's :D

ATI Flashing Tool 1.2 Released

NEW FEATURES:

Added ROMs for new cards:

4890:
HIS
Powercolor without cover
Powercolor with cover
Sapphire New Edition
Sapphire Vapor-X

4870:
XFX ZDFC
Sapphire 512 MB

Complete with the original roms and pictures of card.
The rom package is now separate from the tool.

Custom Natits
Since Natit is based on rom image data, it's not compatible with all cards.
This was something that many problem have had problems with, after installing Natit
they would just get a black screen.

So I took time to rewrite Natit with rom images of ALL the roms in the Rom package.
When you install Natit now, you will be able to choose your card, and then a
custom Natit is automatically installed for you.

Safer Flashing
Flashing is now a bit safer (less chance of failure)
I have not heard yet of a flash failure but I made this change anyway.

Built-in Software Update
Searching the forum for new versions of the tool, or more importantly, QE_CI updates,
was a tedious thing and not really something I liked.
So I went all the way and built in the Sparkle framework into the app.

Getting the QE_CI patch has never been so easy.
Updates are done automatically, or manually from the button under QE_CI
or from the toolbar dropdown ATI Flashing Tool-->Check for updates...
Updating will also download new custom injectors if available.

I'm publishing updates with the app Feeder, which was payed for with your donations.

Small changes
The About section is redesigned a bit
Some new icons here and there

I'd like to start off by apologizing profusely for not being able to figure this out myself or finding the answers I so desperately seek, but you gents seem to be the most knowledgeable individuals on the topic, so my question is this...

What would be a "step-by-step" procedure to allow me to use my recently purchased HIS Radeon 4670 as my main graphics card, both in Windows XP and Snow Leopard? I tried installing Natit, but with the 4670 inserted, I just end up hanging on boot. With it inserted, I'm able to get to either rEFIt and boot into XP fine, but I have to use my GeForce 7300 GT to be able to see any of this, then switch my cable over to the 4670. I've looked into the ATI Flashing Tool, but I'm extremely new at this and don't really have any mastery over what I'm doing.

I'm running a:
Mac Pro 1,1
OSX 10.6.2
8 GB RAM
I believe a 2.66 Xeon (2 Core Duo)
with the stock nVidia GeForce 7300 GT (256 MB VRAM)
and then the additional HIS Radeon HD 4670

Any help would be appreciated, and the end I'd like to achieve is to either have both cards hooked up at the same time, and just use the 7300 GT in OSX and use the 4670 in Windows for games and such, or actually be able to use the 4670 for both OS's and be on my merry way.

Thanks a ton (in advance)

I don't think there's any ROMs or whatnot for the 4670. You might be better off returning it you can - I don't know if any of the guys who are experienced with this could write a ROM for you. Maybe so. Like I said, I don't know.

Okay, that's kind of what I was thinking given the difficulty I had experienced in finding a clear-cut answer.

Now, will the fact that the new iMacs come with a 4670 give me hope for the future that someone will dump the ROM from it, or will it taunt me more than anything?

so i've gotten kinda lost in this thread. Has anyone managed to make a rom that works with the Sapphire 4870 1GB card with the rom I supplied?

Thanks again for all the help.

Now, given the fact that I'm essentially f-ed with this card and what I'd like to do with it, considering all the ROMs that are out there, would it be possible for me to extract the ROM on the 4670 and run some sort of compiler to make it OSX viable, or extract it in XP and have someone create an appropriate ROM? I'm not asking anyone to do this yet, although if they have already, your efforts would be/are greatly appreciated. I just want to know what's possible at this point. I

you would have to solder a new firmware chip and then manually edit the hexadecimal values to be able to sew efi.

Poopdepoop, the ROM that you posted had a Mac-ified version included with Cindori's original flashing tool. Rominator made it, and since then Cindori and I have both verified that (to the best of anyone's ability to tell) it was Mac-ified correctly. Some people are getting it to work with their cards. Is there any chance that you got wires crossed or files confused somewhere, and that's not actually the ROM from the current card you have? Because if it is, I am totally at a loss - both as to why it is not working for you, and as to whether it's not working for me because I have the same problem you have or because I have a slightly different card from you...

I did manage to snag a ROM from 20 days earlier than that one. I'll attach a Mac-ified version of it here, give it a shot. But if the one you posted is absolutely for sure from your card, there's no reason this one should work. Meanwhile, I'm still hoping that there's a more recent ROM out there that will solve my problem... Justit? Any luck with dumping yours?

Cheers!
