This makes me wish even harder that Windows on ARM will be allowed to be installed via "Boot Camp 2.0" and that Microsoft's 64-bit emulation will be enough to drive older software which cannot and will never run on Mac.

I do modding for WarCraft 3 and the World Editor is too clumsy with a far-too-underfunded development team to be migrated to ANY version of OS X.

Reliable leaker who
- tends to write in broken English (could easily mean a number of other things, like “not only the Silicon is at the center of the redesign, there are other tent pole features”)
- sometimes plants fake leaks to expose his copycats wannabe-leakers

I’m perplexed, I would expect this for the MacPro, not the laptops.

'not only for Silicon' seems like a pretty straight forward statement referring to Macs though.

The second is unsubstantiated - no?

l0vetodream has a good leak track record with what he refers to as 'seeing in dreams' haha

For professionals who can’t fully transition away from intel yet due to compatibility issues?
Id say by then most apps will be transitioned for Apple silicon and the intel machines will be a hard sell based on performance alone. With that said, Windows may never be compiled to run ion Apple silicon so that may be the only option for people that need windows.

I'd imagine most notable compatibility issues would be gone by late 2021 when these are rumored to be released. The reviews of the current "low end" M1 Macs suggest that they're running laps around the $2000+ high end Intel models so I don't see what would motivate them to make more Intel ones.

The launch of the M1 would have been the ideal time for this redesign. They already have rounded-corner screens on the iPad, so they really should have brought that to the Mac to add that visual distinction at the same time. Then you could really see the side-by-side improvements.

It could be a manufacturing setback on the high end M-chips for the high end Mac SKUs that might need a stopgap Intel machine.

This is certainly a strange rollout this time around. However, as an owner of a 2019 5K iMac and a 2019 16" MBP, I can't say that I'll be disappointed to see that Intel chips will be used in 2021 as that means the likelihood of longer-term support increases for my own devices. PowerPC support went away fairly quickly last time, so it's nice to know that my "newish" Macs won't be obsoleted so quickly.

then he's transparent about it so what's the big loss haha

Not much, it’s just that now we’re all doubting that the transition to ARM will be ”fast and brutal” as we thought.

This kind of uncertainty killed Microsoft’s ARM efforts 2-3 times, from the Surface RT onward..

Of course Apple dev community is a whole other (fast moving) matter, still..

I'm planning to buy a friend of mine a 16" MacBook Pro as a gift but I don't think buying an Intel one at this juncture is a good buy. I hope that Apple doesn't release any new Intel based Macs and just steams right into ARM on all refreshes. Maybe that's not realistic but I don't wanna purchase a dead end or buy into old technology, I'd rather invest in the future.

I'll never understand apples releases. I dunno why the air exists, the name doesn't even make sense anymore... and I'd think the regular MacBook woulda been the first M1 Mac and redesigned and the pro would be out next year... that woulda made so much more sense...

Very very few will buy the intel ones
Because who need the intel one still, will buy the current one at half of price
But hey, maybe the intel new one will be 50% less than the M one

I Think still making Intel Mac's makes sense. Not everyone uses Just apple software.
I use Ableton, Unreal Engine zBrush adobe tones of music video and art for my business and a lot of them have issues.

On my Mac book m1 my native instrument plugs don't even install. I have other Macs so my m1 MacBook Air was a extra Mac. but if you do work with multiple programs and plug-ins it could take months or years for everything be proper. my main Mac is a Mac Pro 2019 12core that is will be main Mac for a long time. I think if your making money off you may still buy a Intel Mac to get hard core work done. That being said these m1 mac's are amazing when they run native

The 12 inch regular MacBook was discontinued more than a year ago. The Air is still the thinnest and lightest Mac laptop in their lineup so the branding makes sense.

That's the boat I'm in. I got the 2020 iMac for similar reasons. I really don't understand why some users have suggested intel machines are DOA now. For those that rely on specific software every day for their job it's not even a question that we need these machines for some time yet. It's baffling to me that some people are now on this OMG I NEED TO GET ONLY APPLE SILICON kick. 5 years support minimum! I'd wager 7 even. Right now an apple silicon Mac would sit in the corner for me, as it would not currently work with my plug in's in vectoroworks, wouldn't run Lightwright, and nomad wouldn't work. I look forward to get getting an apple silicon MacBook Pro some day, but my actual work will probably remain on my iMac for the foreseeable future.

Another aspect of this entire switch is that for large institutions like schools, offices, that are run by IT departments, they require ease of set up in their existing infrastructure.

So, for those egging folks on to trade-in their early 2020 MBAs for M1 MBAs, do you still think that's the right thing to do? Or, should they wait a few beats for the redesigned models to avoid getting soaked twice on trade-in?

My advice: If you are happy with your current machine, enjoy it and don't immediately jump on the M1 bandwagon. Give this a little time to play out.
