You do not have to update. Put in the foreign SIM then connect to iTunes. Or if jail broken, run SAM utili, deactivate iPhone then connect to iTunes. iTunes contacts the activation server and unlocks.
Do I need a foreign sim? I don't have one at the moment... Will deactivating with SAM and then connecting to iTunes with my AT&T sim in the phone still allow this to work?

I guess in other words I'm asking whether the foreign sim is a 'check' of sorts, or an actual requirement to get the phone unlocked.

Just got my email from Negri Stating phone is now unlocked. Had some instructions along with it. Picking up a t-mobile pre-paid sim from a friend
to confirm my unlock. Can't wait!

You guys, if you're still waiting for an unlock , be sure to de-activate via SAM if you're jailbroken. I didn't know this and have been waiting a couple days for my unlock, and once I de-activated, I connected it to itunes and it unlocked it right away! As for the "confimation" email from cutmysim, this morning i recieved an email from Google Checkout that the order had been shipped. When I plugged in the phone without deactivating, nothing new happened, it wasn't till I de-activated that it said "Checking iTunes Store" and then brought me to the "Congratulations your iPhone is now unlocked!" screen

sweet! officially unlocked!!! now have to go back to 4.3.1 and re-jailbreak with redsn0w :D

Can you please post a snapshot of the tmobile pre-paid SIM if you can. I've been struggling to find a SimpleMobile SIM since most local authorized dealers from this small local carrier want to charge me $85 for an activated SIM + the first month of service.

Congratulation on the new unlock phone ali9686. I travel out of country couple times a year, still the price is a bit hefty to me. I'll stick with gevey sim for now, and hold out till the price goes down below $50 or sth. I know it sounds cheap, but I don't think it's worth more than that to be honest.

ordered on the 12th from Negri,
go back a couple of pages... i found a coupon for $10.00 off that total. i included it in one of my posts as well.. :)

Thanks. Just wanted to check if you are one of the folks who ordered today. But that's wishful thinking.

The deactivate and ATT SIM will work. That is how I did mine.

Anyone knows one of these services with good reputation such as CutYourSim but with open orders? I'd like to unlock my 3GS.

Same thing happened to me to.

There are other sites to buy from. I bought my unlock from cutyoursim.com.

They've also suspended orders for now. I haven't read up on their reviews, but will. I need a good short term option for roaming abroad.
I would never spend 170 bucks to unlock to use, say TmoUSA, but because I'm going to Europe...it could be worth it.
New sales paused….for now

Due to overwhelming demand, we have stopped taking any new orders for the Remote iPhone unlocking service. We will process the orders that we have taken the past few days, and we will hopefully re-open the sales again for the service when we catch up. Sorry about any inconvenience.

I purchased mine on eBay from Windows-19. Purchased on the morning of April 12th and unlocked by the morning of April 15th.

I'm really new to the whole Jailbreak Unlock thing with the iPhone, but I agree with you, this Negri unlock is very expensive especially if you compare the price with the Gevey sim and the Rebel Micro SIM-card, I don't see the point of paying 3 times as much. True, u have to use the adapter vs permanent software unlock (but we don't know for sure it'll be permanent) but I don't think is an issue, if it works it works, u get an unlocked iPhone either way, and with the sims u can update FW if it gets locked again and there's no record in a database or anything.

I need to unlock my phone because i'll be traveling a few times a year to south america and I would like to hear more about the Gevey vs Rebel, I read that the rebel is better, and I don't really need to jailbreak.

I would NEVER use a sim that has me call 911. NFW.
