I did read the comments below (assuming that you are talking about the apple discussion site). It appears to me that more than one person has the issue, though they do appear to be mostly foreign purchasers/users. It isn't clear to me if it is a real issue or not.

the problem is , these people selling unlock are not sure their self what will happen down the line in 6 months.. if apple will just close the loop or close the loop and find out devices which were added and delete them from the list... , how hard is it for apple to find out? ...how many AT&T devices are added to the unlock list, should not take more then few minutes for any programmer at Apple to figure out .. my guess is you will get this unlocked and it will work for ever , only if you wish not to upgrade your iOS ...

That's what I expect to happen.

I have to say though, it is surprising that this has been going on as long as it has even; it's been well publicized and I have no doubt Apple has heard of it. I hope these unlocks actually precede an official announcement from AT&T to offer carrier unlocks (yes I realize that's a long shot, but hey no harm in hoping!).

Either way, anybody who has got it done, back it up with SAM and be on the safe side.

I don't understand why these companies pop-up all of a sudden? How can they access and add the IMEIs to Apple database? It is very strange.

Yes it is very strange to me also, how did they obtained this confidential access, what is their relationship with Apple or Apple employees?

Folks with factory unlocked CANADIAN phones reporting a problem several months ago. NOT US folks on AT&T reporting an issue with recent unlocks Negri. It's a separate issue.

For those that haven't seen this, have a look at this list of carriers for the iPhone and the services they offer: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1937

There are a lot of carriers in the UK, Canada and Australia that offer authorized unlocks. I'm actually surprised that AT&T hasn't been hit with a lawsuit yet.

And if you're with Rogers in Canada, good luck getting them to unlock the phone for you while still under contract.
I hate those pricks.

Well, AT&T has been hit with a lawsuit but they got away with locking iPhones claiming that they have an exclusivity agreement with Apple. The verdict was that AT&T, if requested by the customer will have to unlock all locked phones (with the exception of those phones with exclusivity agreement) if the customer has completed at least 90 days (if I remember right) of his/her contract. AT&T was also directed to unlock all phones with exclusivity agreements of 10 months or less but after the exclusivity agreement expired. The verdict exempted the unlocking of all AT&T iPhones.

Hmm. Thats an interesting statement on their twitter

If Apple Re-Locks for ANY reason, we will refund you in full. (However, we doubt it will come to that)

I still think AT&T refusing to unlock a phone even AFTER the 2-year agreement can be spun around against them, no?

Either way, I just purchased Negri's grossly overpriced unlock :( Will post the result here for anybody still on the ledge.

If you are so sad purchasing it and think its grossly overpriced why did you get it.

I don't think anyone is doubting that Negri can and IS unlocking iphones.
The real question is: how permanent is it? They guarantee it's permanent in one section of their website, and then declare that if it relocks when you update your phone they aren't responsible...

I will repeat myself. This is so strange! I wish someone had logical explanation on how they do it?

At this point, I need it because I travel quite a bit. I look at it as a cheaper alternative to purchasing a factory unlocked phone. I have no doubt that it's grossly overpriced though. Oh well.

They just updated their twitter that they will fully refund your payment if Apple relocks it for any reason :s

I agree that this is very strange. It's been going on for a while and it's not like Apple to keep quiet about it.

Ordered from Cutyoursim.com Tuesday. Yeah they were slow, but they are legit!

If that's the case, they've done a 180 since yesterday.

To anybody who has already done this, will I HAVE to update to 4.3 for the unlock to work? I'm currently on 4.2.1 and was hoping to retain the FW.

You do not have to update. Put in the foreign SIM then connect to iTunes. Or if jail broken, run SAM utili, deactivate iPhone then connect to iTunes. iTunes contacts the activation server and unlocks.
