Still don't understand why people are comparing this to things like the removal of the floppy disk and cassette players. Each of those things were replaced by better technologies. Ditching a wired technology with a wireless one isn't the same thing, but rather something that complements existing things. For example, Wi-Fi isn't a replacement for Ethernet, for without Ethernet, you generally wouldn't have Wi-Fi.

From the interview, it just sounds like Apple couldn't fix a supposed issue that they were having. Were they telling the truth, or was it lazy engineering? We'll never truly know.

There was literally nothing wrong with the 3.5mm jack.

It's a massive port to do one thing only.

Before reading any posts, I just want to say: apple, you are an absolute loser when claiming "removing headphone jack is essential to water resistant". Samsung is the absolute winner on this one.
I completely agree. They could waterproof the Lightning port, but not the headphone jack?!? It all comes down to Jonys ego.

Get over it guys. Once you go wireless you will never miss that annoying cord hanging from your ear to the phone in your pocket like its 1992. Like the man said, this is just the beginning of a wireless future and I'm glad Apple took the step to kick it off. Imagine in a few years, ultra light weight headphones, wireless with a month worth of battery life boosted by kinetic energy already available in watches, charges wirelessly just by placing them on top of your phone or on a charging station (that will literally be everywhere integrated into tables, bars, wherever) and crisp HD audio.

No one is really complaining about the lack of a cord. They're complaining about the poor implementation of this technology by Apple and how they're gouging us for more money by way of all these adapters.

Get your head out of your ass. You're the reason people call us iSheep.

So if Apple removes the headphone ports from the 7, then surely they must keep themselves in check and remove it from other portables like the iPad.

Lightning to headphone jack adapter plugged into an iPhone ≤6S = an additional, second Audio out?

Apple is quite explicitly pushing towards wireless, for which they get no royalties. Lightning is a stop gap.

You think they don't get royalties for their wireless tech? They made a huge deal about the cpu in the wireless head phones. That will bring them a lot of money.

What about wireless charging? They'll get royalties for wireless charging docks. It's a wireless charger but that thing still has to plug into the wall.

Wireless is NOT the future. This is just another way to transmit energy from one place to another, with superior flexibility. Wire, on the other hand, has superior signal stability and high reliability. These are two fundamental things and they will coexist each other almost forever. No one will be able to replace the other.
Your comment, however, blindly claim wireless IS the future. In consumer audio playback, your opinion may be right, and we have seen so many products in the wild. But wireless itself will never Replace wire.

Good riddance of the headphone jack, terrible sound quality out of it anyhow in the iPhone so you never wanted to use any high quality headphone for it without an external DAC/headphone amp. If you were using the headphone jack you can just as well use bluetooth, if you had high quality headphones and were serious about audio quality you already were using that external DAC/amp via lightning.

Most likely the 6 Plus and the 6S we have at home will be upgraded to a 7 and 7 Plus.

How do I charge my phone and listen to music with my headphones at the same time? Do I have to buy a pair of wireless headphones to accomplish this now?
And the air pods have 5hrs of music playback? I do 8hrs a day as my job requires it and having my phone attached to headphones and charging is the easiest way for me.... I guess my 6s Plus better last awhile, when if finally goes I'll hope for better Wireless battery life or I'll have to move on I guess

Your iPhone 7 is powered/charged by your courage ;-) Doesn't anyone pay attention to these keynotes anymore? ;-)

Ok, now please read this one post: Apple never said it was essential. MacRumors did. MacRumors was wrong in their choice of words. Please stop blaming Apple for MacRumors' poor writing. Apple told Buzzfeed that the headphone port was a key point of ingress for water and therefore removing it helped waterproof the device. Not essential. Helped. It's a hole in the box, the fact that removing it helped is self evident. There's really no reason to keep going on about this.

Wireless means battery. Means power consumption. Means battery that dies after a couple of years. It also means that you must be able to charge and have an other cord in any case. It means that you will have even more waves exposure (unnecessary by the way). And frosting on the top : it is of lower quality...

All in all, that a nice piece of progess ! :D

At least it was doing that one thing right.

Since they now have two cameras and two speakers, I think they should have added another one.

Maybe the iPhone 8 will have three cameras and three speakers, then, they can chuck the internal battery, and you can carry an external one around your neck (with an adapter, and a stylish band).

Except its not a real argument at all. Since there is practically no good reason why you should ever need to do this. And lets be frank: what you mean is you can't use WIRED headphones while charging. There are many USB-out audio scenarios such as speaker docks, home theatre, car audio, where charging and listening to music just happen together through the same cable.
The only thing you "cant" do is tethering your head to the wall like some kind of _____ fill in the blank.
[doublepost=1473309081][/doublepost]
I can tell you exactly why. Here it goes, pay attention: No one cares, no one needs this, no one misses it. It is nothing but a troll's trump card and weak one at that.

You have the audacity to call someone else a troll? Forget it, I'm not even engaging with a fanboy shill that has his head up Phil Schiller's "_____ fill in the blank." Never been so happy to have an ignore button.

So how did Samsung manage to get an even higher water resistance certification and still keep the headphone jack?

By being more creative, exploring more options, and more determination.

Apple found the task too difficult, and said "I give up, we'll just eliminate the feature instead of utilizing options that other companies know how to do."

Oh wait... I know. Apple knew that if they waterproofed a headphone jack, that people might say "Samsung did it first." This way Apple can spin it as "We were first to take away a feature that customers liked."

Oh wait, there's other things without headphone jacks. Like my toaster, dishwasher, and even my doorbell. What really sucks, is listening to my refrigerator without headphone. Guess Apple wasn't first there either.
