At least it was doing that one thing right.

Since they now have two cameras and two speakers, I think they should have added another one.

Maybe the iPhone 8 will have three cameras and three speakers, then, they can chuck the internal battery, and you can carry an external one around your neck (with an adapter, and a stylish band).
My Amazon Fire Phone has 5 cameras, 3 microphones, and a headphone jack.

"The audio connector is more than 100 years old" ... I hate that argument, it really has no point at all other than saying old means obsolete. But so is the wheel. If you think about it, being an industry standard for such a long time proves that there's something working very well, but hey, it's easier to say that the hj is old and outdated than admitting they just couldn't find a way around their interference problem.

You think they don't get royalties for their wireless tech? They made a huge deal about the cpu in the wireless head phones. That will bring them a lot of money.

What about wireless charging? They'll get royalties for wireless charging docks. It's a wireless charger but that thing still has to plug into the wall.
They are getting royalties for their proprietary wireless solution that they are pushing.
Proprietary means they made the chip, not that nobody else can talk to the iPhone. The W1 looks like it's just a Bluetooth chip that Apple fancied up probably by reducing the power draw as a result of their acquisition of Passif. I didn't see anything that says they're ripping Bluetooth out of the iPhone.

Brave move by apple (I understand they weren't the first but the other two companys didn't sell zillions a year!) but three things

• in a few years we will laugh at the thought of a wired headphone. Wireless everything is 100% the future.

• wireless earbuds will have quick charge 15 mins and 48 hours use within two years

• companies that make custom made earbuds that dont fall out of your ear (surely its not just me) will do really well when they move over to wireless https://www.etymotic.com I see an opportunity hear (sorry).

And here comes the "iWheel", it's elliptical, and it doesn't roll very well, but it's new and shiny.

Don't look back, history may catch up and run you over.

at this point, this just sounds just crazy to me. First of all in audio, nothing compares with the quality of wired connections. And second, to my knowledge the connector is apple proprietary so i imagine we will be limited on some super specific headphones brands (general crappy ones). Or we have to use the apple adapter which does not appeal at all to me (just atoner thing i have to carry around with me because apple made poor engineering decisions). Sadly, I guess i will be moving out of their ecosystem. First Spottify, then the Fitbit and when my iphone 6 will die, I guess will be time to find a good iphone replacement.

Except its not a real argument at all. Since there is practically no good reason why you should ever need to do this. And lets be frank: what you mean is you can't use WIRED headphones while charging. There are many USB-out audio scenarios such as speaker docks, home theatre, car audio, where charging and listening to music just happen together through the same cable.
The only thing you "cant" do is tethering your head to the wall like some kind of _____ fill in the blank.

I can tell you exactly why. Here it goes, pay attention: No one cares, no one needs this, no one misses it. It is nothing but a troll's trump card and weak one at that.

I require lightning and 3.5mm every day in my car and often at home - iPhone 6.
A lot of folks also use the iPhone for sat nav and connect to their stereo - as we all know sat nav on iPhone drains battery from 100% to zero in under 3 hours.
I'm sure I'm not alone here that a "Y" adapter is needed and needed fast - short term.
Wireless is the future no doubt about that.

How are you going to use Spotify without a wireless connection? I think that might be the weak link in your audio quality...

With respect to the Apple team, I call BS on the reasons given about the headphone jack removal. They make little sense and are contradictions.

Care to elaborate on why removing something wouldn't mean there's more space to put something else where the first something used to be?

As an owner of 3 mid-range headphones (Denon AHD-2000, Denon AH-MM400 and Sennheiser HD-25-II) I'm kinda miffed, sure there's an adapter, sure the jack is obsolete (debatable), sure wireless is the way to go (but 4 hours autonomy is no improvement over anything), but I feel this "push forward" is unwarranted:

1. Lightning headphones require an external dac (in the cable/plug) if I'm correct?

2. Wireless headphones need charging, this is a con in my book, regardless of future iterations that will improve on this issue by lasting longer.

3. Bluetooth headphones and speakers have teething problems that are not yet fully solved and while I admire the engineering and craftsmanship that went into the AirPods, the drawbacks are still quite there (4 hours autonomy, still relying on Bluetooth 4.2, no AptX support).

I may be an old geezer but this transition is going to be felt deeply, will the audio industry align to Apple's decision? Bluetooth is not superior in terms of quality as it is now (Apple's "secret sauce" notwithstanding) and Lightning is not an industry standard in terms of audio (yet), maybe USB-C will.

Changes happen its not a big deal we have the FREE adapter and a future "Y" adapter hopefully say 9.99 to charge and listen.
Why are you so angry how will it effect you so much?
cheers

Now what shall we kick out to an accessory next year to create room for "more innovation" in what must be an even "thinner" iPhone? You know, that battery takes up most of the space, it's an even OLDER technology than the headphone jack and people already buy battery cases anyway. Hmmmm.

With the direction they are going to (all in accessories), it will not surprise me if they decide to remove the whole battery out of the phone at one point and offer the batteries with cases as accessories in different shapes and in all colours of the rainbow. What an "true" work of engineering and what an "innovation" that would be ....?

Ok, now please read this one post: Apple never said it was essential. MacRumors did. MacRumors was wrong in their choice of words. Please stop blaming Apple for MacRumors' poor writing. Apple told Buzzfeed that the headphone port was a key point of ingress for water and therefore removing it helped waterproof the device. Not essential. Helped. It's a hole in the box, the fact that removing it helped is self evident. There's really no reason to keep going on about this.
OK. Let's just put the word aside. But the fact which Samsung released phone with water resistant as well as headphone jack is also self evident. Why Apple need to sacrifice headphone jack to reach water resistant? Yet the level is not as high as Samsung device? This is enough to say a lot.
