Of course, Apple could also drop the preoccupation with "thinner" and created the room for all of that and KEPT the headphone jack. 2 apparently great wants of iPhone buyers:
  • More battery
  • Get rid of the protruding wart
Rather than ejecting thoroughly ubiquitous utility to "free up "very valuable space," a modestly thicker iPhone could have accomplished the same. I pretty much never see, hear, meet anyone clamoring for "thinner." Now apparently "thinner" comes at a price of kicking utility OUT to accessories.

But spin it fellas... spin it. "Thinner" is essential so the headphone jack had to go so that other stuff could fit. That was our only option.

Now what shall we kick out to an accessory next year to create room for "more innovation" in what must be an even "thinner" iPhone? You know, that battery takes up most of the space, it's an even OLDER technology than the headphone jack and people already buy battery cases anyway. Hmmmm.

Possibly you are more obsessed with thoughts of thinness than apple?
I understand you would have preferred them to keep the 3,5mm and I am sure you have your reasons, but where in their little statement do they talk of making the phone thinner?
They give a couple of reasons for the removal... you may choose to believe or not... but the new phone is exactly as thick as last years phone.
Same dimensions, but a but lighter.

There are also folks here who are the exact opposite -- they will chime in to stick up for Apple against every and any slight (no matter how minor). Do you think those guys are Apple "plants"?
Tribalism and hate come free in humans.

The rage in other people's comments only makes me enjoy the whole situation even more.
I had no issue with the "hole" in the phone and honestly don't care how I hook up headphones be it via lightning or BT..... I ALSO LOVE the rage related to this move and am giddy with happiness reading the comments on a lot of the threads.... Splody heads keep sploding!!!

You should not be wearing your headphones when driving, it's illegal and dangerous.

One ear in only. Volume no louder than someone sitting next to me and no different to a one ear-piece old school bluetooth hands free kit.

When the headphone jack was removed, Apple realized it was easier to install the new Taptic Engine for the pressure-sensitive Home button, implement a bigger battery, and reach an IP7 water resistance rating, so the elimination of the headphone jack became essential for all of the other features in the iPhone 7.

Sounds like a case of MORON engineers that can't do a basic layout. Amazing how other phone makers manage to have things like stereo speakers without removing their headphone jacks.

Apple executives also believe the headphone jack is outdated technology that needed to go to make room for new advancements.

BULLCRAP. It's not "outdated" in the slightest. It delivers full range signals. Bluetooth is LOW-FI. It doesn't have the bandwidth for redbook CD audio quality from 1982! While the lightning port can be used, it makes it impossible to charge the device and listen to it at the same time without using Bluetooth. That sounds like pain in the butt to me (e.g. I keep older iOS devices along my listening chairs in my living room plugged in so battery life isn't an issue. One can surf the Net, use it as a remote or listen to music privately via headphones. That won't work on the new iPhones as they become outdated. You'll have to choose between charging and listening and as the battery loses its capability to maintain a charge, it will become useless in that regard.

According to Dan Riccio, it was holding Apple back "from a number of things" the company wanted to add to the iPhone, taking up space that could be used for camera improvements, battery, and processors.

They act like it's HUGE. Given what they ACTUALLY put there was another speaker, their laundry list of things they claim went there is a LIE.

According to Apple's Phil Schiller, there's no ulterior motive behind the move away from the 3.5mm headphone jack. "We are removing the audio jack because we have developed a better way to deliver audio.

Again, what "BETTER" way are they referring to? Having to keep a DONGLE to use your existing high-end headphones? That's BETTER? Bullcrap it is. As I said, Bluetooth headphones SUCK if you care about quality. Even Steve Wozniak agrees (http://money.cnn.com/2016/08/24/technology/apple-iphone-headphone-jack/)

It has nothing to do with content management or DRM -- that's pure, paranoid conspiracy theory," he said.

Who ever said it did? Some of us just believe it's BONEHEAD move. No wonder my newest phone isn't from Apple.

To ease the transition away from the 3.5mm headphone jack, Apple is including a 3.5mm to Lightning adapter with every iPhone 7 and it is also offering EarPods with a Lightning connector. Apple's new AirPods, which are fully wireless and are priced at $159, will also make it easier for customers to adapt to a device without a jack.

Their earpods SUCK and always have. That adapter is easy to lose and interferes with charging when plugged in. Apple is full of it. I hope their sales TANK. They deserve it.

So true. I used to have respect for Apple. Now, I view them as the most arrogant, dishonest old men that have ever existed in the 21st century, they simply need to retire. Their greed, I find repulsive.

I think we can all think of a few slightly more "arrogant, dishonest old men in the 21st century"? Certain names from the world of politics spring to mind, who have far more influence on the lives of people around the globe than apple execs' decisions about headphone ports :)

Yes apolloa, Apple took out the port and drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom of the phone and left the internals completely unprotected. I actually heard if you hold the iPhone 7 upside down, poor water into the bottom left speaker holes and wait 15 seconds, it will come out the new camera hole as espresso.

Hahaha being sarcastic doesn't provide proof to backup a claim, and they could of put the microphone behind the holes, you know like Sony has been doing for years....

It's just too bad the AirPods look like Q-tips sticking out of your ears. At least release them in black.

Yes black like all the key note photos were.
I live in the UK and we have an expression in TV adverts " they included a 'token black man or women'
I actually felt apple were being racist against white folk!! Its strange being a token white man!.
How many white people were in apples key note?
ps
I am NOT racist against any creed.

Anyone else wonders if Apple will sell the right and left AirPods separately for people who lose one? Those things are begging to get lost.

I seriously doubt it. That's like selling individual gloves, only less cost effective because they need packaging too.

Okay. Explain how a lighting connected device offers better audio?

Hint here is : look up DAC.

Fact is : if you have decent heaphones , the DAC shipped in the adapter for $9 is inferior to that in the 6S, so inferior audio
Do you have a source for that? How do you know the DAC used in the adapter is inferior?

So this is the future of Tim Cook's Apple: No device will work without some kind of adapter, and charging is now impossible if using an earphone adapter on iPhone. If new MBPs only have USB-C, all legacy devices won't work without adapters either. How is this in any way user-friendly?

I don't buy new computers and tech stuff so it will work properly at some point in the future. IMHO the entire point of buying the newest gadgets is for advantages of the latest technology - which should make using them easier, not more complicated and expensive.

If this is Apple's way of trying to drive sales of new products to boost profits, there's a real chance this new business model could backfire big time. I might be in the minority, but having adapters hanging out of everything seems more primitive to me. It indicates that the machine is incapable of functioning on its own. Paying top dollar for devices that don't work independent of add-ons/accessories is bull****.

its $9.00, with profit margin.......... in the world of DACs.....which range unto thousands....thats junk ;)

Though, lets wait and see what it is. I guarantee you the 6S is far superior, iPhones have always come with quality DACs . Im going to get one to plug into my 6S and compare there SQ using lighting v 3.5mm and some quality headphones, best way to tell

Given my ears are Analog, and nothing has changed, except the movement of the DAC..... how exactly am I living in the past??? Nothing has changed SQ wise....

So you addressed 1 of my 4 points with a non sequitur? Your last point says nothing is changed SQ wise....OK thats great. But a lot has changed with the saved space inside the iPhone. So all in all same sound quality with more internal room for future improvements.

So with your Analog ears, I assume you also don't use any digital connections for home theatre. No Optical Audio, no HDMI or any of that fancy stuff? After all the connection from your Amplifier to your speaker is Analog so why fuss with all that 21st century stuff.

While we're talking about how analog our senses are, lets just forgoe digital video sources as well since our eyes aren't digital either. I'm gonna trade in all my blu-rays and digital movies for VHS, beta ect. Shouldn't make a difference right?

Edit: Spelling

Its true, its time to move on.. technology changes, people don't use cassette players anymore

Not everyone uses $10 Skull candies or that awful Apple earbuds.

In ear monitors can cost $1000 or more, much more than the iPhone itself. Now Apple wants people to use these high end IEMs with an adapter? Smh
