Still don't understand why people are comparing this to things like the removal of the floppy disk and cassette players. Each of those things were replaced by better technologies. Ditching a wired technology with a wireless one isn't the same thing, but rather something that complements existing things. For example, Wi-Fi isn't a replacement for Ethernet, for without Ethernet, you generally wouldn't have Wi-Fi.

From the interview, it just sounds like Apple couldn't fix a supposed issue that they were having. Were they telling the truth, or was it lazy engineering? We'll never truly know.

There was literally nothing wrong with the 3.5mm jack.
Where's the ethernet port on your phone/tablet/ultra thin laptop etc..? I'm one of the people with hundreds of dollars worth of 'old' headphones with the trusty 3.5mm jack but the removal of the port won't have me running to an Android based phone.

I think the only trick that Apple has missed is addressing the ability to charge and listen to music with wired headphones simultaneously. Also I wonder how quickly they will 'align' their products? Will we see the next round of Macs and iPads drop their 3.5mm ports for Lightning connectors?

I've seen suggestions of pass-through plugs or Lightning splitters to address the charge and listen scenario, but I wonder is there a risk of people plugging in two chargers and frying something? That's the problem with a universal connector. Imagine if HDMI and ethernet used the same connector as mains electricity....

Water resistance and camera upgrades are good things. But no headphone jack means it's not possible to keep the phone charging while driving in a car, using GPS and listening to music simultaneously. It also means iRig HD and Apogee Jam, 2 very nice guitar lightning interfaces, won't be compatible with iPhone 7. And the other question is: are iPads next to have no 3.5 mm jack? Then the macs too? I don't like where Apple is heading.

You should not be wearing headphones and driving! It even against the law... Expect all next gen production not to have headphone jack...

A) Prove to me that the DAC in the adaptor is inferior to the onboard one in the 6s
B) I hope every song on your iPhone is lossless and not compressed or you literally won't tell the difference anyway.
C) They are using the extra space in the phone to add a bunch of stuff, move the haptic engine around oct, so you are getting tons of extra stuff.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned this yet, but the headphone jack is also a liability. I had something go wrong with my headphone jack where my iPhone thought headphones were plugged in all the time, even if they weren't and thus I could not get any sound out of my phone. Little research and I found that this is actually a common problem because of the construction of 3.5 mm housing.

If your on the 3.5mm bandwagon you live in the past. That is fact.

its $9.00, with profit margin.......... in the world of DACs.....which range unto thousands....thats junk ;)

Though, lets wait and see what it is. I guarantee you the 6S is far superior, iPhones have always come with quality DACs . Im going to get one to plug into my 6S and compare there SQ using lighting v 3.5mm and some quality headphones, best way to tell

Given my ears are Analogue, and nothing has changed, except the movement of the DAC..... how exactly am I living in the past??? Nothing has changed SQ wise....

Jeeze man, it's a removal of a headphone jack not the end of the world.

You get a free adapter, it really is not that big of a deal.

I give you my word, if the removal of the headphone jack starts the apocolypse (or causes zombies), I'll come here find this post and say you were right. After all...... "Think of the headphone jack, oh won't somebody please think of the headphone jack".

OK... if we want to play the blow-it-out-of-proportion game, why not to the other extreme...

Jeeze man, it's a removal of a headphone jack, not nirvana.

Plus you get a free adapter. It's really almost too good to be true.

I give you my word, if the removal of the headphone jacks triggers world peace, prosperity for all and cures every disease, I'll come here, find this post and say you were right. After all...

Or seriously: I said nothing about such extremes. From my own perspective, it's just hassle for what still seems like no meaningful consumer gain that could not also have been had by- say- quitting the "thinner" game instead. And sure, "if you don't like it, don't buy it" is so easily slung around at people who can actually "think different" but I do like it... just not this particular decision in it. Going Android comes with a whole host of other issues that I'd also call hassles... many more and much worse hassles. I (personally) would rather stick with the better phone, the better phone OS but NOT roll with the hassle created with this decision.

That's simply a consumer's opinion. Apparently we all have rights to them.

So, I'm in my car and I have the stock headphones. How do I put the phone into a charger (cuz I'll be using GPS and that's juicy) and take a hands-free call with the stock headphones like I do now?

Oh, I can't unless I BUY extra ****ing headphones that look like ear tampons.

So I'm at home and I put my phone in the charger at night and at the same time listen to something on my Grado headphones. I'm a sound engineer and I want to listen to that days mixes but my phone needs charging.

Oh, I can't do that at all. Great. I do these things now. If I can't do them, I wouldn't want the phone would I. And being able to plug something else in whilst a phone is charging shouldn't be too much to ask.

Just to be clear, water resistant to 50m watch (with a speaker, that requires air/part movement) totally doable, but making an iPhone splash resistant with a aux jack (which has no moving parts), simply can't be done?

Also, they're proud that they made the adaptor too small to allow for both listening and charging at the same time?

Sooooo, the speaker in the new watch literally ejaculates after submersion, and the iPhone 7 ... jacks off?

What a time to be alive!

Did you read the article?

Don't like the audio jack jack-move by Apple?

Don't buy the damn phone, girls. Oh, and you may wanna check the mirror, your make-up is running.

whats the problem (apart from charge and listen) you have a free adapter?
Surely okay for most??

People will complain about this for a few months and then accept it over time. No point in whining about it since it's going to stay from here on out.

Since an adapter is included (I heard that right?) it's not even that big of a deal. It's annoying for SD cards etc... yet making a cord a little longer is not too bad.

Sounds like a lame excuse. If they could devise a way to spit water out of the speaker of the new Apple watch to keep it water proof then they surely could find a way to fit a 3.5mm jack on the phone and keep it water tight.
Look at it this way. Now that it's gone, the only way to get it back is to eliminate some essential feature. So, it's not coming back.

They did find a way to fit a 3.5mm jack on the iPhone. You take the adapter out of the box and put the lightning end into the lightning port of the iPhone. Then you plug the 3.5mm phone plug into the headphone jack on the other end of the adapter.

Okay. Explain how a lighting connected device offers better audio?

Hint here is : look up DAC.

Fact is : if you have decent heaphones , the DAC shipped in the adapter for $9 is inferior to that in the 6S, so inferior audio.

The money spinner: you will be purchasing a new DAC each time you buy lightning heaphones , while the iPhone has one built in.

Lightning devices make no difference to audio, as the end signal is analogue, and it is the DAC that determines the audio quality. There always needs to be a DAC, the awesome advantage of the 6S is that you did not need to purchase a new DAC each time you bought lighting heaphones.

Another fun fact. My 6S has every single capability to that of the 7, I too can plug in expansive lightning headphones or buy a DAC to plug in, which I do won, but my 6S out of the box provides superior Audio quality to the 7, cause the DAC in my 6S costs more than the $9 adapter, and given apples profit margins, damn that DAC must be utter junk ;)

The 7 provides zero sound quality advantage over the 6S, as both have a lighting port. The 6S has superior audio sound quality due to its superior DAC.

So removing the headphone jack also removes the DAC? I'm confused on this. Wouldn't there be a DAC either way whether audio comes from a headphone jack or lighting jack?

I like the idea of using lightning interface ... it opens door to HDAudio on iPhone and iTunes. I suspect that there will be an adaptor that will allow 3.5mm jack AND lightning interfaces... from Apple or third partys.

You should not be wearing your headphones when driving, it's illegal and dangerous.

2017 will see the iPhone with wireless charging, therefore one use for the lightening port will be minimized and for some entirely redundant.

Proof? I am yet to see any..

Yes apolloa, Apple took out the port and drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom of the phone and left the internals completely unprotected. I actually heard if you hold the iPhone 7 upside down, poor water into the bottom left speaker holes and wait 15 seconds, it will come out the new camera hole as espresso.

I'm in the same boat, but not a musician unfortunately - looks like we will have to get a -hopefully inexpensive - "Y" adapter.

If I recall the Sony smartphones still retain their HP jack and they can play HD audio. To me it's all marketing and the new AirPods are way overpriced. $219 in Canada.
