I hope this new iPhone will flop. Then they would realise it was a mistake to remove it. I'll be fine with my SE for a couple of years but after that I guess I'll have to get a Samsung or whatever still has a headphone jack.

Give it the jack isn't coming back, just like the floppy drive didn't come back or the cd/dvd drive didn't come back.

It's just too bad the AirPods look like Q-tips sticking out of your ears. At least release them in black.
What an ugly design.

Well Apple said water resistant which I guess leaves them an out.
Folks are so dumb. This is not water proof but water resistance. Just another Apple stupid marketing. Huge difference folks.

This sounds like a long explanation for bad engineering or bad prioritization. As others have pointed out at length - Apple created these problems by obsessing over thinness. I guess this makes Sony and Samsung genius innovators - they can get water resistance without losing major features or technology. Amazing!

I'm fine with them removing it, I really am. I don't know if I've even used it on my 6S, that being said, please don't say it was to aid in waterproof. Samsung has IP68 and has a headphone jack. This makes you look kinda bad Apple. Hell, say it's for the bigger battery or something, just not something that we know isn't true.
Why are so many people bringing this up? It's not like it was the only reason they provided, it was an added bonus...
So they have removed the headphone jack for fake ****ing holes!! They have put MORE holes in it when they could have not made any and had a more waterproof phone.....

Apple... Think Different.... To all common sense...
Except those aren't really holes and water can't get in from there.

One question I have is the choice to stick to lightning vs usb-c, especially with the MacBook and probably the Pro sticking to usb-c. Is there an advantage in sticking to lightning with everything moving to a newer standard?

Hi
It all depends on how
deeply you are committed to the apple "ecosystem"
When Steve said approx 2008 "we are investing $100,000,000 in an app store I was astounded now I see Steves's vision was the key to keeping you and me in the ecosystem so he lives on in many many ways.
cheers

I'm with you. This is a deal breaker for me. I need the ability to charge and use a wired headset simultaneously. I will use my 6+ until it dies then switch to another brand.

Shut Up! Is that what the new air pods look like? Dang that's ugly weird.

I don't find them ugly, but I know one thing. They wont fit my ears at all.
The technology seems pretty good, but I will never be able to use it.

Apple averages everyones ears together and produces a one-size-for-all.
Annoying enough when it is tethered to a wire, totally ridiculous when then will just fall out on the floor.

So they removed a standard port and they suggest 3 options for replacement:

1) Proprietary port that is also used for charging. (So no longer charging and listening to music, or having your iphone in the car as navigation system connected via aux)
2) Proprietary wireless protocol only compatible with apple products
3) Standard wireless protocol that suffers from unresolved issues for decades.

What did we get in return? TAPTIC HOME BUTTON.
Thanks, but I will pass. Actually I am abandoning the whole platform. See you in the distant future apple.

I would usually agree with this but I think the opposite may happen in this case. The inconvenience of carrying around an adapter might increasingly annoy 7/7+ owners over time.
I dunno, if you are carrying around your headphones you just leave the adapter connected to them?

Precisely!

Apple's pushing this excuse hard, but a company as skilled as Apple could do what Samsung did easily. This is Apple not wanting to take complete responsibility since until they announced it there was no way to estimate the amount of pushback they'd get.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. Just another reason to wait till next year before buying. By then there'll be better choices than the ugly Apple wireless ear buds. They look like someone chopped off the wires... Incredibly Ugly.
I know, what an ugly price of crap. I would buy it and YouTube me burning it

Okay. Explain how a lighting connected device offers better audio?

Hint here is : look up DAC.

Fact is : if you have decent heaphones , the DAC shipped in the adapter for $9 is inferior to that in the 6S, so inferior audio.

The money spinner: you will be purchasing a new DAC each time you buy lightning heaphones , while the iPhone has one built in.

Lightning devices make no difference to audio, as the end signal is analogue, and it is the DAC that determines the audio quality. There always needs to be a DAC, the awesome advantage of the 6S is that you did not need to purchase a new DAC each time you bought lighting heaphones.

Another fun fact. My 6S has every single capability to that of the 7, I too can plug in expansive lightning headphones or buy a DAC to plug in, which I do won, but my 6S out of the box provides superior Audio quality to the 7, cause the DAC in my 6S costs more than the $9 adapter, and given apples profit margins, damn that DAC must be utter junk ;)

The 7 provides zero sound quality advantage over the 6S, as both have a lighting port. The 6S has superior audio sound quality due to its superior DAC.

A) Prove to me that the DAC in the adaptor is inferior to the onboard one in the 6s
B) I hope every song on your iPhone is lossless and not compressed or you literally won't tell the difference anyway.
C) They are using the extra space in the phone to add a bunch of stuff, move the haptic engine around oct, so you are getting tons of extra stuff.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned this yet, but the headphone jack is also a liability. I had something go wrong with my headphone jack where my iPhone thought headphones were plugged in all the time, even if they weren't and thus I could not get any sound out of my phone. Little research and I found that this is actually a common problem because of the construction of 3.5 mm housing.

If your on the 3.5mm bandwagon you live in the past. That is fact.

Will the new lightning ear pods still be able to work with older idevices?

This is a good question.

Presumably the new lightning to audio connector (especially @ $9) is just a pass through of analog audio signal off the lightning jack.
It is hard to find specs for this, Apple's spec sheets used to be much more complete.

Anyone know if lightning passes analog audio on detection? If so, I would assume that's not a new feature.

I'm guessing:
1) Any analog headphones will work with the new adapter.
2) The new lightning earpods will work with any lightning port shipped so far.

Oh right, so I guess Sony are frigin technical geniuses then as they managed to make water proof headphone ports YEARS AGO!!!

If Apple are that inept at technical design, I highly suggest they hire some of Sonys mobile division engineers...

Or basically Apple is talking UTTER BS to give excuses for ditching the headphone jack which is far more likely..

Apple truely really are getting more and more arrogant and treating its customers with more and more contempt as the years role on.

If their customers were to apply some common sense, as you have pointed out .... water resistant headphone jacks have existed for years, instead of buying this BS, apple would not be uttering this crap.

As proven on these forums, people will accept anything they say, which sadly means they will repeat this inaccurate BS to their friends etc, which just confirms the stereotype that Apple apologists ...lack tech knowledge and will buy anything apple says.

Problem is the fan base and not apple. Apple will keep this up, as long as people buy it. :(

Still know one give me a difinitve on this-

NO mention of USB-3 in the tech specs
I found what I was referring to (eventually!).

"The 12.9-inch variant also has the distinction of being the only iOS device from Apple to feature a high-speed USB 3 Lightning port. The 9.7-inch model features the same standard USB 2-speed Lightning port as all other devices."

http://iphone.appleinsider.com/arti...vs-129-ipad-pro-which-choice-is-right-for-you

But exclusively on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, users will gain access to higher transfer speeds when syncing with USB 3 computers, as well (as faster charging with Apple's 29-watt USB-C wall adapter.)

Has the 7 got USB 3? thanks

Apple removed the headphone jack in the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, a controversial decision that's upset some iPhone fans. On stage at today's media event, Apple executives explained that it had been done to save space and to usher in improvements in wireless headphone technology, but in an interview with BuzzFeed, Apple's Greg Joswiak, Dan Riccio, and Phil Schiller explained in much greater detail why the decision was made to move away from the 3.5mm headphone jack.

The idea for the removal of the headphone jack was raised during the development of the iPhone 7. In a nutshell, the "driver ledge" for the display and backlight, traditionally placed near the camera, was interfering with the new camera systems in the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, leading Apple to explore other placement options. It was moved near the audio jack, but it also caused interference with various components, including the audio jack itself, so Apple engineers toyed with the elimination of the jack altogether.

When the headphone jack was removed, Apple realized it was easier to install the new Taptic Engine for the pressure-sensitive Home button, implement a bigger battery, and reach an IP7 water resistance rating, so the elimination of the headphone jack became essential for all of the other features in the iPhone 7.

Apple executives also believe the headphone jack is outdated technology that needed to go to make room for new advancements. According to Dan Riccio, it was holding Apple back "from a number of things" the company wanted to add to the iPhone, taking up space that could be used for camera improvements, battery, and processors.According to Apple's Phil Schiller, there's no ulterior motive behind the move away from the 3.5mm headphone jack. "We are removing the audio jack because we have developed a better way to deliver audio. It has nothing to do with content management or DRM -- that's pure, paranoid conspiracy theory," he said.

To ease the transition away from the 3.5mm headphone jack, Apple is including a 3.5mm to Lightning adapter with every iPhone 7 and it is also offering EarPods with a Lightning connector. Apple's new AirPods, which are fully wireless and are priced at $159, will also make it easier for customers to adapt to a device without a jack.

On the subject of Apple's new AirPods, Apple's Schiller says the earbuds, which are "as advanced a project as Apple Pencil," have been in development since the Apple Watch was conceived. "We knew we needed a great wireless solution for audio," he said. "What if you could design what the future of headphones should look like?' That's we asked the team to do."

The full explanation for the removal of the headphone jack, which is well worth reading, is available over at BuzzFeed.

Just to be clear, water resistant to 50m watch (with a speaker, that requires air/part movement) totally doable, but making an iPhone splash resistant with a aux jack (which has no moving parts), simply can't be done?

Also, they're proud that they made the adaptor too small to allow for both listening and charging at the same time?

Sooooo, the speaker in the new watch literally ejaculates after submersion, and the iPhone 7 ... jacks off?

What a time to be alive!

Bull ****..marketing lies.. Apple Jumped the Shark..
[doublepost=1473293573][/doublepost]Water is really old technology, lets get rid of it

Lol, you that thick.

We haven't found a substitute for water to survive. On the other hand, the 3.5mm jack is an archaic POS with plenty of better alternatives.

Do we know for a fact that the DAC is in the adapter? I thought the lightning port could pass analog audio?
