It has to be at least as good as the best product in history?? My, what reasonable demands you have.
It wasn’t the best product in history. It was an innovative product that became very popular. Maybe it was the most popular product in history - which isn’t the same as the best. But still a feather in apples cap.

This product is interesting because the barrier to entry is rumored to be so high at $3000. We heard these rumors with both iPad and Apple Watch that ended up being false.

Apple's first gen products that debuted in new product categories for comparison.

iPhone - $599
Apple Watch - $349
iPad - $499
Apple TV - $299
iPod - $399

Nope. The concept and idea was started before Steve passed away.

@Wanted797 Can you point to any credible sources that support the assertion that the Watch was conceived during Steve's time? A 2015 Wired article notes that Jony "Ive began dreaming about an Apple watch just after CEO Steve Jobs’ death in October 2011." Kevin Lynch was subsequently hired away from Adobe in early 2013 to lead the Watch project, and as we all know it was announced by Tim Cook in September 2014.

It doesn’t sound like they’re releasing this version premature, and will be riddled with bugs. It sounds like they wanted further research to be able to release the lightweight iteration. Probably so people start developing apps for it, by the time a cheaper and lighter version is ready, they have the software.

The glasses should be a separate product. In that case, it's okay to release the goggles when they are ready. It will help to spur Apple to complete the glasses. They can refine the goggles and put their fixes into the glasses. And developers can start developing for the goggles and glasses.

Interactive workouts? I just cleaned a mold contaminated building wearing protective gear. That’s about as much of a workout as I care to get wearing goggles strapped to my head.

I don’t even wear my glasses during a workout. Miss me with this nonsense.

No, they have to be doing something else to sell/demo this thing.

Otherwise, they really do need to listen to their designers.

I hope that’s the case. That makes more sense.

We shouldn't judge this until Apple enters the space.

Apple has completely changed the game almost every time they enter a new product category with a perfectly refined device and cohesive user experience.
Even if your an Apple fan, and seen all the AR apps available from Apple. It's akin to the very first DVD players. Little media content, expensive, technology not matured versus associated costs, performance capabilities in real extended usage. This is way different than first iPhone where that was sold at a reasonable price and was useful from the beginning using existing technology. This is tinkering at a much earlier point with this technology then utilizing their version of technology where there are multiple devices being marketed to consumers. Right now this is a lot more commercial than consumer. Apple should be just using prototypes this year shared with devs to further expose what can be achieved with AR. ;)

my 2 cents: another planted rumor by Apple to hype up this thing, and prep the world that it is not really ready so it might flop - still looking for consumer level use cases that will make people spend 3k or whatever for a technology with minimal benefits for day-to-day consumer usage ...

They haven't, not really. The iPhone, for example, only became so big because it launched with first generation of new touchscreen tech. The iPod was the last truely novel device that Apple released, that wasn't just a "better" version of something before it, but a truely novel approach to something.

Who is gonna want this thing? I mean c'mon there are already some of these from other companies and that isn't a big market.
I asked on a birthday party yesterday and no one sees the point in using this thing.
As someone currently with a Quest 2, I would love to have one.

Apple clearly released the Watch before it was ready and it still worked out for them. I’m guessing that’s what they are thinking here.

“Insane requirements” is not good. You can easily over-design anything with a never ending “tweaking” of the product. 7 years is long enough. That’s a good CEO knowing when the product is ready. Can’t wait to see what they have.
Steve would have pressed engineers to ship a product too. Part of the wait has been due to technology. The high resolution panels simply did not exist for too long. But now they do.

Ugh I can’t believe I’m saying this... but i like this. Steve more often than not would not listen to his team and would often push their limits. So I think it’s a good thing timmy is taking hard decisions like this, the Steve Jobs way.

If Apple must release this headset before it's ready, can this technology company also run a car company at the same time? Because the devices they make are mostly made the same way, perhaps Apple thinks the tech products that built their company are too easy to do, so they must add something else to their plate.

Interesting article from the most secretive company in the world. I am sure this will be a neat start for a new product category and line of services. Everyone is waiting for Apple to show the way and open the path of AR. So Long Meta … we are all waiting for the start of a new era …

They expect to sell a million at $3000?? 🙄

This is today’s Apple, not the Apple that won me over and gave me refuge when I abandoned the Microsoft hellscape platform. I do not like this Apple. I stick with it because it’s less bad than the competition.

It is Tim Cook’s Apple. He was good at what he did under Steve Jobs, but his leadership of the company has resulted in everything Apple makes since 2013 being rushed, incomplete, and loaded with design and software flaws. It just continues to get worse every year. The industry isn’t offering us anything better, because there’s absolutely zero accountability. The culture surrounding tech is fundamentally broken and irrational, while its proponents like to claim to be the most logical of all. It’s ridiculous.

Yep.
