I know the movie business is in a weird place right now but its not so weird and unpredictable that "Brad Pitt $300m F1 movie" isn't an obvious bomb. Who the hell is the audience for this?
You might be surprised. The global audience for F1, much like football/soccer, is truly massive. Something close to two billion people. Meanwhile, it appears the trend toward superhero reboots and science fiction franchises has about run its course.

I still love the movie theatre and will always go to see big stuff that I personally am interested to see ASAP to avoid spoilers etc.

Ill mainly go to see the MCU movies in the cinema and made sure to see Deadpool and Wolverine soon after release to avoid the spoilers that frankly Marvel themselves put out a week later ruining cameos etc.

However, Marvel themselves caused a lot of the problems by the ever decreasing window between theatrical release and Disney+. In recent memory I believe it was just ridiculous for Dr Strange Multiverse of Madness when it appeared on Disney+ 6 weeks after it opened in theatres. That was WAY TOO SOON and when people experience that then going forward they are significant less inclined to go to the cinema with all the expense and potential disruption from badly behaved moviegoers etc etc etc

Its a problem that the movie companies have made themselves.
Yes, but to be fair, even good movies have a run of 2 weeks on the big screens and movie theatres.

Get out of the TV Show and movie business and have the numerous other companies who have streaming apps do that. Refocus on hardware. If they want to do content they should do AAA games, make a first party game controller and upgrade Apple TV to be a living room device capable of handling those games, and have games from this focus work also with Mac. Otherwise do cloud software, AI, operating systems and hardware and quitting messing around with the distraction that is Hollywood.
100% support this idea.

300 million for a darn movie… My god, 300.000.000 bucks for a movie. How do you even manage to spend numbers like that… On a movie..!

****ing hell.
And yet they can't slap together a 12" Apple Silicon MacBook that would cost zippo to make, gen a profit, and cause as much buzz as a movie...

But then Apple execs won't get to hang with the celebs in those LA parties (and that's a bullet point driver in their decision making... not huge, but it's a swaying one)

Basically.... where's the pew pew space adventure sci fi fantasy fun stuff that appeals to the majority?
On every other major streaming service. Nothing wrong with trying to offer something different. But, maybe, they should decide to be an "art house" service and stick with it - instead of such also-rans in the "people walking away from explosions in slow motion" ouvre such as "The Family Plan", "Ghosted" and "Argyle" that would have been "majority appeal" if they had been any good (seriously, just watch Kingsman or the original True Lies three times instead...). OK, so the first two are better than Dismal+'s official "True Lies" rehash, but then...

Yes we can have things like Foundation - a mega budget spectacle but it's not really got mass appeal.
The Apple version is already a lot more pew-pew space adventure-y than the books which it is supposed to be based on...

Dump movies and get into serious gaming … it’s a billion dollar industry that hauls in new users annually - those young users will become buyers of other Apple products and services.

Scoop up a bunch of big-name gaming studios to start and go against Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo (or just buy them!)

2 billion? Rush (2013) had box office 98m. And that was a fairly known and well received movie made from 30m. Hardly a raging success.

There are dozens of excellent movies made in the world every year. In Americas, in Europe, in Asia, in Africa... Most will never be visible in the US. Apple is trying to reinvent the wheel and they make it square. Their movies are bad, boring, arrogant, expensive and pointless.
In fact, they reflect what Apple has become.

Nobody has truly committed to become a sports streamer. Apple should just focus more on sports and acquire some major publisher for movies.

Bringing movies to streaming so soon after theatrical release or instead of theatrical release has devalued the theater going experience for many many people. All movies are basically now “direct to video” in the eyes of the public. A movie thrown into a bin with hundreds of others psychologically makes it not really worth watching to the casual movie watcher.
On top of that the quality of movies may have changed over the years.

And a real rivalry, of two larger than life figures, two actors that filled their roles excellently, taking place during one of the most famous seasons of the sport.

Excellent movie, btw.

They should try making something with a low budget - that way you can't afford to have a 900 consultants that ruin the thing. Maybe either split the tv+ app from the store / library OR add other peoples movies and shows so it's worth actually subscribing. Right now there's no reason to pay a sub for a few shiny over produced, over consulted pieces.

For me, Apple's problem with their series and movie production is that they are technically high-quality, but they lack inspiration and emotion... they are too calculated and designed to win awards. Sometimes they hit the mark in capturing the viewer's interest, but most of the time they don't.

The film industry is struggling, especially in the United States. When big actors voice their ideological opinions, it often comes at a cost. Similarly, movies that delve into social issues don't appeal to many viewers. 🤷‍♂️
The 70’s; the most political decade in history, also was the golden age of movies. And they also had the reactionaries complaining. Same old same old.

Still, most movies today are pretty bad. Agree.

They could but look what it’s doing to its reputation. Reputation is everything when you are that size.

Yes, but what is "it" doing to Apple's reputation? Apple seems to continue to rank just as high or higher on reputation or admired company lists since getting into the movie/streaming business.

However, going back to the comment I had replied to, I just don't see Apple’s involvement in the movie/streaming business having any impact on iOS or other development. There have been on and off issues with iOS bugs and other things well before Apple ever got into the movies/streaming.

I agree, but it's not just an Apple problem. That's exactly what I could feel after watching "Oppenheimer", for instance. Movie production is a "risky" business. Now they try to please everyone, win awards, and "offend" no one. Most movies are too flat.
Or/and... I'm getting too old.

This seems a ridiculously naive expectation.

Personally, I would never pay for a cinema ticket for an Apple movie because I know that its coming to AppleTV+ very soon.
Argyll we had to wait quite a few weeks for but it was coming so why go and pay cinema prices when its coming as part of the AppleTV+ subscription you already pay.

That's why they haven't done well in cinemas - sure some of them have been less than stellar movies but hey.
With that (flawed) logic, why'd go to see films in cinemas at all? Everything is coming to a streaming platform sooner or later.
