I could almost entertain a 7 inch iPad launching sometime this year. the iPhone launching in September/October is a serious DUH at this point. As for a NEW new iPad this year, that is a totally not gonna happen as far as I'm concerned.

I don't think they would ever upgrade the iPad in under 11 months. Give people who bought the last one enough time to recover from the cost and be drooling for a new gadget. They know what they're doing with the current release cycles.

Am I the only one who wants a 7" tablet? I've held off on an iPad because I don't want to spend $500+ on something I can't carry with me all the time unless I have a murse. My Kobo eReader stays in my coat pocket all the time.

- 32nm
- 128GB
- global LTE

This is what the iPad needs for me to buy it, even if I skipped the iPad 2 precisely because of the lack of retina.

Just needed to quote you, because you are 100% right.
We want an LTE enabled iPad with a 32nm SOC that draws less power and does not get as hot as the one used right now.

I think Apple was in a hurry to release it and they will silently change the spec before christmas. As they did now for the iPad2.

Nope you're not the only one, I too am holding out for a 7" tablet. I was going to get the Nook decided against it when I heard MS got their mitts on them.

No, you're not alone. Among other things, my camera bag could hold a 7" tablet fine, but a 10" won't fit. And If I have my camera bag, I really don't want to have to have another carry bag with me.

You know, you might actually wait until this is more than a random rumor some site is reporting cause it has nothing more interesting to report. You act like this was an article saying what Apple will be doing, not what is predicted to happen.

That being said, I could see them doing a 7" tablet, I think there is a market for it and it would tap a different market than the 10".

But I see no motivation for them to release another 10" iPad already. That costs money and they don't have enough competition to worry about it. Hell, they have enough competition to worry about it with the iPhone and I don't see them releasing more than one a year.

The iPhone rumor is a duh at this point (even though I'd like it to be June especially since my 4 is starting to really be laggy). They haven't even released the next iOS to developers so I think there's the proof it will be at least September (or rather at least later than June). Plus I think marketing wise Sept/Oct makes more sense.

There's not going to be a new 10" iPad by the end of this year. These idiots said the same thing after the iPad 2 was released in March 2011.

the former ipad though, a. didn't have heat problems and was in dire need of smaller process in the cpu, b. didn't have the previous ipad model testing a smaller process to be employed by future iphone and ipad releases, and c. hadn't dropped the number designation so it could be silently, or not so silently updated, as the macs.

Could they do a die shrink to improve battery power, reduce heat, and reduce part cost by $20 each, add a higher speed wifi protocol, and deploy one more (for China) LTE format unit to add to the two they already have?

Hmmm.

Of all those things only the improved Mobile Data Radios need to even be acknowledged in any advertising. The same iPad now with 4G in more Countries. iPad (late 2012).

iPad

We already have 9.7-inch... so I can understand a 7-icher would make sense.

But why a 10-inch ? People would miss this ?

Not really.... vr-zone just posted an article stating that the current third gen iPad was Apple's plan B because LG's new IGZO panel was not ready for production in the quantities needed by Apple. This coupled with the die shrink on the revised iPad 2 leads me to believe Apple is planning a refresh with the IGZO screen they originally wanted to use and a die shrink too. This would give Apple a revised iPad that would be thinner, lighter, with longer battery life and the same third gen HD display to bolster holiday sales.
And at the same time piss off everyone who bought a new iPad in March? Doubtful.

Since it's just called "iPad" now, a lot of people are going to be (rightly) mad that their iPad that was purchased in late March 2012 is now replaced with a new model in Q4.

I can't see Apple releasing a new version of the iPad before Feb 2013.
Not going to happen. That would be Apple basically saying the iPad released in March was not ready for prime time and everyone who bought one would want a refund or upgrade to the newer iPad. A least I know I would.

Um...I know 3 kids that have iPod Touches and would rather have an iPad since they pick that up over the Touch when they are in the same room.

So think about it. 7" iPod Touch vs current size Touch...no brainer...

The iPod Touch is getting phased out...the 7" iPad is going to replace it.
Why do they have to phase it out, especially since the iPod brand is so recognizable with kids? Just make the current iPod touch bigger. It's due for a refresh anyway. And doing that coud keep the media from spinning it as Apple responding to the Kindle Fire (most of them were claiming the Fire would be massively successful and Apple would have to respond with a similar sized iPad).

Digitimes makes one final claim in its latest report, indicating that Foxconn will be a manufacturing partner for a smaller 7-inch iPad, which is planned for release in August. Claims of such a device have been circulating for some time with some reports similarly pointing to a Q3 launch, and it seems likely that Apple has at least toyed with the idea. It is unclear, however, whether the company truly has any intentions of bringing it out of its design lab.

Steve Jobs saying that a 7 inch iPad would be too small to be useable makes it pretty clear they have zero intentions of bringing it out of the lab. After all, Jony is in charge of that lab now just as he was when Steve made the comment. So it was probably Jony's analysis that lead to the comment and it would still be in play.

a 5-6 inch iPod touch as a newly redesigned product for use as a remote, game controller yet, maybe. but not a smaller iPad.

Wasn't the exact same thing said about this time last year?

Yep right up there with the yearly 'iPad Pro' model coming out six months after the 'lame' update to the iPad in the spring.

ain't happened yet. cause it never will. same with this one.

the only way I see a December release of anything iPad related is if Apple does a limited edition Product Red iPad for the holidays. But that is just asking for it to go on ebay with a huge mark up so likely not happening.

So I can't see Apple wanting to introduce a 7" iPad simply to follow suit with Amazon's Kindle Fire.

Exactly, everyone is always saying "to compete with the Fire" but lets face it. so far the shipments of the Fire haven't blown way the sales of the current 'big' iPad much less the sales (particularly if you adjust for returns) so why would Apple feel the need to make a smaller model when they are winning with the current one

----------

The 7" iPad rumor is believable also. It's going to replace the iPod Touch and it's a perfect device for a school time release in August like the touch always was..

That whole school thing only works if you expect schools to make the kiddies BYOD. Otherwise it's about 4 months too late for this school year. And given that the January education stuff was for the current 10 inch iPad and you can't yet use those ibooks texts on the iPhone I'm not so sure Apple is thinking about a smaller unit for them. I think all that stuff was to push sales on the current size model.

----------

Next we will be hearing about the Apple iCar that get a gazillion mpg and can fly. Give it a rest.

why would they do that. it would canabalize sales for the iTransporter

----------

Is it just me, or is Apple getting slower at releasing new products? I know they tend to focus on minimalism vs. a mass of products. But it seems like they're taking their time with new Mac updates, and even last year with the 4S update.

1. parts are slower to change up to give them something to update. and remember there was a huge hard drive crisis in Thailand thanks to the floods, that could be holding back some stuff

2. they weren't slow to update the iPhone they made a decision to change their time tables and get WWDC back to the software focus it was created to serve. but like all things Apple they don't announce changes or explain themselves ahead of time.

3. perhaps slowing down and releasing fewer but better updates would be a good thing.

----------

Why do we always fall for that rumor of an updated iPad in December?

given the number of folks screaming 'bs' I wouldn't say anyone has 'fallen' for the rumor.

that said perhaps MR should have put this link in the article.

7" ipad? Maybe. Fullsize iPad that quick after the iPad 3? Nope, not gonna happen. I don't know why they even waste their time dreaming up stuff like that.
