So are you going to line 3 versions of those up on your bedside table (or wherever your hypothetical AirPower would go), and plug them into a power strip? Apple seems to have taken on too much, engineering-wise, but their solution would be way more elegant for use cases where there are multiple devices.
Why would anyone need to line up 3 versions of the charging stands? My reply was simply a response to "Am I the only one who was looking forward to a pad where you could actually put your phone anywhere?" - A direct response to a direct question. That question had nothing to do with multiple devices.

That should teach Apple not to announce things before they are "almost" ready...

It's either you own an old version of Apple Watch or you bought the wrong version of Qi charger. Amazon is actually selling a wider Qi charger that looks like the AirPower and charges Apple Watch and iPhone at the same time. The only missing is the special effects prompting on iPhone charging status, that thing has no practical use anyway. Save your money don't just throw them to Apple your just giving the ideas that you're willing to pay premium mentality.

Series 1 is not compatible at all, but even users with series 3 have problem with Qi chargers. I know some of them work, but many don't.
And you know what? Maybe Apple won't to it, but it doesn't state Apple Watch is compatible with all Qi pads, they could very well cut the support with a future watchOS upgrade. I don't expect them to do it, but you never know, look what they've done with third party charging cables.
Obviously I'd like them to fully support the Qi standard on the Watch and make it possible to charge it with all pad that works with an iPhone, that would be great.
As for the premium mentality I own several watch bands bought on amazon for a few $, I don't like giving money to Apple just to have their logo on a product, but a charging device is something I take quite seriously for safety reasons so I prefer to spend something more for a good product, even if it is not made by Apple. That's my definition of premium.

I’m actually glad this happened to teach them a lesson. Apple has gotten far to cozy in recent years announcing stuff that ships late (messages in the cloud , AirPlay 2, etc etc etc ) or now this product that probably won’t ship at all in its current form for a long time. They need to just stop with all the preview garbage. Announce it when you can get in peoples hands in a few weeks.

Incoming Steve cliche except this time it’s dead on. He would have never allowed a pipe dream like AirPower to be announced so early. And he would have used his laser eye focus to burn whoever came up with iPhone XS MAX
Disagree. I’d rather have as much advance info as Apple is willing to give. Some would rather be kept in the dark, but I don’t see how that’s particularly useful.

Like group FaceTime. Yes it’s coming, and I like knowing that. No, it’s not ready for the 12.0 release. Yes, I can wait until it’s ready to be released. I won’t stomp my feet and scream, “but I want it now. Give it to me now. I know it’s coming and I simply can’t wait another day!”

And before someone goes all "buy you still got a lot from the device, or you can still use other Qi pads" understand that I don't care. I wanted the simplicity of a single-cable wireless-charging location for all of my devices. And that desire is not unreasonable because Apple showed it to us.

For me the issue here isn't "darn they couldn't do it - at least they didn't ship a crappy product" but rather "never trust us because we will kill a product we promised before we let it lower the bottom line".

I totally agree with you, however.... right now I think everything is just a speculation (unless I have missed some official statement by Apple) Apple did say release by 2018, meaning another 3 months and a half. Though everything may suggest that this product is dead, I would take with a pinch of salt anything that is not official. After all, we are in a rumor site.

With all of the 3rd party options that are available with wireless chargers, I’m surprised and a bit skeptical the delay is due to technical issues.

I've not read the article, but you'd have thought they'd been like 90% of the way into testing before announcing this thing.

I'd like to think that is exactly what Apple did; they've worked their way to "AirPower has multiple engineering issues" from "AirPower has gained control of a nuclear arsenal and is negotiating with foreign powers."

Pretty lame for a trillion dollars company to announce a product and then, be unable to deliver it. Im now scared about the new modular Mac Pro they announced a while ago.

Not Tim Cook.he announces things just to up the stock price. He doesn’t care about functionality. Just look at he Apple Pencil. It directly goes against everything Jobs ever wanted in future devices but he is sold on it and don’t dare call it a stylus. Apple is becoming pathetic on innovation and functionality. I can deal without the innovation because there is only so much I want to do on my phone but functionality is irritating.

Better not to release a defective product than release something and have returns. At present nobody is hurt as nobody has bought the product.

Surprised and skeptical why? To date, neither Apple nor any 3rd party vendor has been able to deliver a place anywhere, multi-charging device. 9to5 has a diagram associated with the Dickson info.

This is, apparently, what's required to get "place anywhere" to work. It's not hard to see how this could be a technical hurdle. Wrangling signals from that many transmitters... I'd say it could qualify as a technical issue.

And this, Apple is why you make sure you can actually make the product and have somewhat of a prototype already made and working before you go and announce it.

You must be real old school, I put my Note 8 on the wireless charger on my nightstand and its way more convenient than trying to find a wire at night to plug in plus my charging port doesn't get worn out as much. Its very handy once you get used to it. Samsung gave me the fast wireless charger free when I pre-ordered my phone and it works well, not sure why Apple is having such a hard time.

I have that in Tesla. But find it so slow its not really worth it especially if you have GPS on. Im sure there are advantages but i have trouble seeing them :) Exactly like with a "smart appliances" , switches etc.

I’ll take fast charging over wireless charging any day. Good news for anyone buying a new iPhone: it has fast charging! You just have to pay $75 extra for the charger that’s isn’t included. Think Different.

Wireless is a misnomer, it is 'inductive' charging, as the device requires direct contact to the charging power source. Just like a cable connected from a power source to a device. 'wireless' charging charges or powers a receiving device without being physically connected.
Yes I understand that. Still its called like that as you dont need cable directly attached to the device.

I don't understand the point of the product anyway. You can already go on Amazon and buy something similar for $20. They're not really breaking any new ground here.

but it's white and has a high price tag. that makes ppl feel better about themselves when they purchase it ;)

I wish Apple would re-think the form of a multi-device charging unit, and instead of being just a single plane flat pad, make one end an upright angled stand for the iPhone, with a flat horizontal area in front of the angled section to charge your Watch and AirPods case, since those would normally, expectantly, lay flat. This would make far more sense whether you've got it on a bedside table or at a desk, so that you can interact with the iPhone in a more natural manner.

This would also likely help with the thermal efficiency, by having the coils that charge the iPhone upright where they can radiate more heat energy into the surrounding environment.

I think the pad as it is now, looks more like something Apple would use in-store, kind of like a jeweler's display pad, not something I'd want to have on my bedside table or my desk.

They should kill it at this point. People who want a wireless charging pad have likely already purchased one.

So AirPower was announced to “up the stock price?”

You can’t be serious.

Every product that matters becomes a reality. AirPower would be a nice to have, but it being announced did zero for the stock. Even if it were out, it would do nothing for the stock.
