This device would sense the location of up to three devices on a large open mat and intelligently direct energy to the individual devices, regardless of position.

There is nothing on the market today that can perform that trick.

True.

But this kinda reminds me of the cylinder-shaped workstation with the triangular thermal-core.

There's a reason no one else tried it. Sometimes Apple can be a little too clever with "tricks"

That should teach Apple not to announce things before they are "almost" ready...

The iPhone wasn't ready when they announced it in 2007. It crashed constantly. During the demo Jobs had a VERY specific order in which he could show the functionality or it would crash and restart the phone immediately.

So you're saying they should have waited to announce the iPhone until the following year (at the time big Apple announcements had to be made at Macworld, which gave them 1 chance each year to do so). Waiting a year would have allowed Android to come to market first and may have killed the success the iPhone has seen.

Btw, why is “Sonny Dickson” a credible source? Poking around on his website, he has said very little about Apple since 2015 and nothing there oooks groundbreaking.

Seems you don’t even need credibility to criticize Apple these days.

Yes, why is this so hard for Apple? Very late to the party.
They seem to like to test and refine the crap out of their new products and once they’re finally to Apple’s Standard the hype around the technology featured in that product has died down.

I'd rather have a smaller pad capable of charging a single device for a start. Apple Watch is not Qi compatible so every time I go on vacation I need to bring two cables and at least one plug. Even when I'm at home I need to charge my Watch on the only place where I have the stand capable of charging.
I'd be willing to pay a premium for an Apple pad since I won't need the separate cable for the Watch (is isn't cheap at all) I don't really care about charging multiple devices at one. I mean, is cool, but if they can't find a way to do it properly they could just release a simple version.
Instead of having a built in cable, the apple watch charger should just be a "Puck" that you connect using a lightning cable.

I wonder whether Apple could get sued over this? How many people bought an iPhone 8/8+/X, or AirPods, or an Apple Watch with the AirPower as a selling point?

This would qualify as false advertising or bait and switch, would it not? I figure we could see Apple having to refund people $4-20 for each device they bought that should have been compatible in a class action lawsuit.

Really? They are unwilling to compromise on the design to fix the issues [with circuitry]. Why is Apple so gung-ho about thinness? If making it 1~2 mm thicker, or even more thicker, who cares? It is sitting on my nightstand.

Another puzzling thing about intradevice communication. Are they implying the phone takes charge (I just noticed the pun so obviously it wasn't intended) of other devices whilst being charged?

Even if this doesn't come to fruition, I'm hoping the R&D produces some advancements in wireless charging tech.

I have my RavPower wireless fast charger, so I'm good. Apple are too late to the wireless charging party...
Does your RAVPower wireless charger produce heat?

So they’d rather compromise on the quality just to make it thinner and smaller even if this results in massive issues with heat... so basically it’s the same as their computers then
Heat is not a problem for most computers - not my Apple computers, so I'm not sure what you are attempting to infer here.

I don't understand the point of the product anyway. You can already go on Amazon and buy something similar for $20. They're not really breaking any new ground here.
Can the Amazon device ($10 - $30) charge your Apple devices?
None of my Apple devices can be charged wirelessly.

Why even bother? Just stick to the old fashioned way of charging devices: a 100% reliable, power cord.
One of my charging cables (Apple) charges my iPad at half the current of a second charging cable (also Apple). One cable charges ONLY if I am physically pushing it in the lightning port. That 100% reliable does not always apply.

Everyone knows wireless charging is the future. Someone has to make the first investment in getting us there.

Despite the promise of a 2018 release date, Apple's long-awaited AirPower wireless charging mat remains unavailable, and almost all mentions of the device were last week removed from its website. This has prompted speculation over what could be behind the delay - and even whether the AirPower, which was announced over a year ago, will ever see the light of day.

airpoweriphone8.jpg

Previous reports have touched upon the technical issues Apple has run into with the AirPower's design, but a new report published on Sunday by Sonny Dickson claims several pieces of exclusive information that shed light on the challenges Apple is still facing with the device, which is designed to charge the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods all at once.

According to the report's multiple internal sources, many of those working on the AirPower project believe the device may be "doomed to failure" unless engineering solutions can be found for a host of currently unresolved issues, which include:
Heat managementBuggy inter-device communicationMechanical and interference issuesAside from heat and interference shielding, the report notes that the complexity of the circuitry in the device is also posing a significant challenge, which may not be overcome unless the device is redesigned to be slightly thicker and larger. However, Apple is said to be "unwilling to make compromises" on the AirPower's overall design.

Wrapping up, Dickson holds out hope that the AirPower could still debut before the end of the year, but claims that "the broad consensus among engineers suggests that this is highly unlikely".

Indeed, Dickson says chatter he's heard "less notable individuals involved with the project" suggest that the AirPower concept and trademark could eventually be applied to an all-new product with other unmentioned features, to be publicly shown at an undisclosed date "not likely to occur before Spring".

For those who remain steadfastly optimistic about the AirPower, Apple has a few more months to meet its self-imposed 2018 deadline for the device, so it's still possible we'll see the device debut via press release in October, November, or December.

[doublepost=1537191813][/doublepost]Why bother at all, I think the concept is flawed anyway. I use all the devices and never charge them at the same time and would never. Release the wireless rechageable pod for the airpods, I have enough wireless charging stations

It's totally fine if they never release AirPower, but its completely unacceptable that they've just gone radio silent about it. Are they gonna wait until December 31, 2018, to suddenly announce they aren't releasing it? Just keep people informed and everyone will be fine...

Their version of wireless charging is worth the wait if they get it. Some people here apparently don’t understand what made the Apple version unique (and therefore challenging to develop). The “late to the party” remarks show a lack of understanding as to how this charger was going to be different from the “alignment-constrained” cheap options out there now. If wireless charging is really going to be more than a gimmick, this is the path we need. Eventually you could build this into furniture and other hardware. Imagine just leaving your phone(s) and devices anywhere on your desk or nightstand eventually, or anywhere on your car’s center console. This “party” hasn’t actually started, so Apple isn’t late.

Magical.

If they can't get Qi right.....sure looking forward to their buggy room scale charging that kills you when you try to charge your phone :D

So does Apple's extra year inspire confidence that they will be the company to get us there? :p

AirPower actually sounds good. But I think they jumped the gun with their announcement.

At least they could get some balls and tell us what's going on... not just delete every mention of AirPower from their website like a coward... :)

I think there would of been low demand for this product anyway. And I think the mat is too small. The size of a mouse mat would be nice.

No, it would not. The device you bought does what was advertised. It wirelessly charges using a plethora of available Qi chargers. If they said your purchase included a free AirPower, that would be different.
