This is what happens when one announces yet unavailable products or services, sets a release plan and then lags behind. One gets justifiably fussed upon. ;)

Am I the only one who was looking forward to a pad where you could actually put your phone anywhere?

And those $20 “put-them-in-this-x-only” pads don’t count
Star Trek was a popular TV show. Far too many people never understood that it was 100% fictional. Apple's "magical" gadgets still have to play by the rules of physics.

The iPhone wasn't ready when they announced it in 2007. It crashed constantly. During the demo Jobs had a VERY specific order in which he could show the functionality or it would crash and restart the phone immediately.

So you're saying they should have waited to announce the iPhone until the following year (at the time big Apple announcements had to be made at Macworld, which gave them 1 chance each year to do so). Waiting a year would have allowed Android to come to market first and may have killed the success the iPhone has seen.
Nice try, I said almost, and yes that kinda stuff happened with Jobs as well (White iPhone 4, yes they knew about the issue but not about the solution, wich came waaaaay later), the issue you are talking about (1st gen iPhone) were Software issue, and showing a beta is a thing, announcing a product you haven't even engineered is another.

No they shouldn't have waited for the phone as the HW was ready, the software needed tweaking, the AirPower apparently was not tought out from the beginning as per the article:
"According to the report's multiple internal sources, many of those working on the AirPower project believe the device may be "doomed to failure" unless engineering solutions can be found for a host of currently unresolved issues".

That means they announced a product knowing about the issue (wich is fine if you know how to fix it), but without knowing how to get around them, this is the problem. (Heat issue, really? no s. Sherlock!)

If the AirPower was having issue from a SW side you'd have a point, but they are 2 different issue here.

Waiting a year could save your Company if it means releasing a faulty product.

This is a mess. For the foreseeable price of this AirPower mat you are able to buy NOW about ~10 great quality standalone wireless chargers and put them in various convenient places around your hose/flat. Why would anyone really NEED a single pad???

Even if Apple wanted to push this "smart" wireless charging - wouldn't separate, MUCH CHEAPER, single device smart & fast wireless chargers would make way more sense than this?

It would have been great for those that travel a lot... but I live without it so power to them for trying but really no problem for me.

I've not read the article, but you'd have thought they'd been like 90% of the way into testing before announcing this thing.

NAAH - Then they wouldn't have been able to announce the iPhone 8 with it's enticing new feature (over the 7)

So they’d rather compromise on the quality just to make it thinner and smaller even if this results in massive issues with heat... so basically it’s the same as their computers then

THIS!!!!!

My Pro just about burns itself up. What is with this nobody asked for it obsession with thin over any semblance of function? Battery life? Nope, THIN. Heat management? Nope, THIN.

Enough already. Everything is plenty thin fellas, tell Jony to put down the crack pipe and slowly back away.

Excellent point. It’s a good thing they didn’t remove the Lightning connector from the iPhone 8, or they would have had to rely on Belkin to supply a way to charge it weeks later like another port that shall remain nameless ...

I'll help Apple out.
Step One: Buy one of the many third party models currently selling for sub $20
Step Two: Sell it under its own brand, and Mark up the price to $100
Step Three: Do this still in 2018, meeting your deadline
Step Four: When you finally find a fix.. it becomes "second generation/version/model"

This is what happens when Apple tries to stick to a public standard. If they had designed a proprietary solution we would have it by now.

This was such a low risk product, there was zero harm in announcing it and killing it. It has had absolutely impact on them by not bringing it to market.

Pretty well any electrical power engineer could have seen this happening. Wireless transmission of decent power levels generates heat and is also pretty lossy.
Then think of scaling this up to wireless charging of cars while they are moving.
To some people, this is Nirvana but to others... it is get the bargepole out and make it extra, extra long.

I'll continue to plug my phone in. If blind people can attach a plug then if can't be too hard for the rest of us now can it? Or, have we got that lazy.....?

That technology is not promising. Once the real wireless technology will be available I will maybe change my mind. Lets say 3m range.
I'm not sure I want to spend much time hanging around in an environment where something is pumping enough power into the room as radio waves that it can make useful progress charging a phone that's 10 feet away - and keep in mind that to put 10 watts into the phone after losses from capturing and converting radio waves back to electricity, combined with the losses from radiating out to that distance, it's going to have to be continuously pumping out several orders of magnitude more power than the desired 10 watts. Doesn't sound like fun, unless you like living inside a microwave oven.

Mention what? It was a promotional marketing event! They're not going to provide a new target date for a product that might be canceled.
Mention Airpower a year after they mentioned it. Its like they are going to scrap airpower by the looks of it. But atleast mention it
