Trump 2016

Sooner or later someone was gonna say it so let's get it out of the way now.

China's a lot like my dad, they try to save a buck, only to end up spending 2.

The real way to hurt China would be to cut off American made products like baby formula, almonds, peanuts, etc. when their own people can't trust domestically made food, that's a dangerous problem to have.

Most normal people don't own shell companies, only rich people and rich businesses. Apple invents all their patents in USA, sells them for pennies to an Irish shell company. Taxes Uncle Sam collects on that are fractions of a penny.

That shell company then licenses those patents to Apple for billions. The shell company makes billions and pays taxes in other countries while Apple uses those patent expenses as further tax deductions in USA.

And that is perfectly legal. You blame apple or the people who make the laws?

I wonder if Cook will dare to say a word in public about China's recent ban on same-sex marriages? My guess is he will stay mum (and 100% hypocritical).

"Recent" ban?

they mostly seem to come from Australia.

The U.S. government needs to get the WTO involved; this is corporate protectionism plain and simple. Along with the more pedestrian media censorship, of course.

So if someone had downloaded a movie and book they would now no longer have access to it on a new device unless they backed up their stuff first? That would suck big time. But then, so would living in China. I couldn't live in such a controlling place.

The Chinese government wants their populace to buy Huawei's products, where the software is reported to include interesting features coded by special units of the Chinese Army. But people are buying iPhone SE's instead, where the OS is designed in California... without even a backdoor for the local friendly FBI. The long game here could get interesting.

My trusty tin foil hat is telling me that the security in the products are good if China is forcing them out, but the cynic in me is saying that this is a scapegoating side effect of temporary governmental cleanup.

Next they will be burning books....
No. They are always doing such from time to time. They just keep such action as national secrets.

I think we will see a steady erosion of liberty as the "free" world increasingly mimics the Chinese government's system of enterprise and controls.
And the lead of such is United States.

People talk like this is censorship. I doubt it. I believe it's probably related to either some deals with the local license holders, or some sort of protectionism of some local players.

If you want to talk censorship, look at Europe, where everything has to be politically correct.

If you don't associate censorship with China, you really haven't been paying attention.

So no wonder why a lot of Chinese prefer pirating contents rather than purchasing them. They are just banned by government. So lovers have no choice but to download them for free.

...and there goes one of the few legal ways to buy movies in China!

And as for books - a dude with a few crates visits outside of my office every week or two to sell us fake books...

fake

books!*

*these are real books that have been scanned in and reprinted by a local printer.

Ugh. The U.S. should train all school children to hack Chinese government websites. I'm sure they've got the same program there.

Censorship is pretty bad in the U.S. too unfortunately. Not as bad a China.
Wait, what? The U.S. is very careful not to censor anything. There's a Nazi political party and the KKK. Heck, you can get away with crimes here as long as you claim it's a protest. Are there nations that give more freedom of speech? Certainly not the U.K., France, or Germany.

And If you don't see the actions done in Europe in the name of political correctness as censorship, then you are more ignorant.

In this particular specific Apple's case, I don't really see it as censorship per se. You cannot just claim censorship just because there's China on the headline.

While to a point I agree with you, you can claim censorship if you RTFA instead of weighing into the debate without doing so.

the Chinese State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television is a censor.
