Yeah I don’t believe them one bit. Ross has a perfect accuracy score and he knows his displays like no others, Gurman and Dylandkt who both have way better track record both went in the same direction. Digitimes accuracy is literally around 50%, which is a coin toss…

1) miniLED displays are still LCDs
2) not every Full Array Local Dimming is a miniLED, like the Pro Display XDR 32” is not a miniLED but it’s still got a ton of local dimming zones, so that would be an optimistic way to interpret Digitimes: the iMac Pro could technically not be a miniLED but it won’t be edge-lit either, instead it could be as glorious as the Pro Display XDR in terms of dimming zones and HDR performances

Maybe Apple uses miniLED only for smaller/thinner displays.
the imac has thin display...so ..it has high chances to be also a miniLed

It’s like reality here. How were they to keep the cost down at that size of a panel.

27-inch. Coming in colors. Sounds lke we are getting a bigger iMac (and no iMac Pro).

Exactly. They can't,. yet. Asus has a 27" mini led for $3k. An LG OLED 27" is also $3k. So maybe for the super pro version. I think the cost has to come down before Apple will spring for it in the higher sizes regardless.

Great, at least small chance that it will have pwm free, so superior, display

I bet there are two iMacs announced.

Regular iMac with regular LCD display.
iMac Pro with miniLED and ProMotion.

I appreciate the very relevant information you pointed out in the rest of your comment, but is this really worth mentioning?

In 2030, when we have microLED displays that have 3 tiny zones per pixel (one for each sub-pixel) that handily beat out OLED, we could still say "tHeY'rE sTiLl eL sEa DeEeeZ !¡!1!"

Yes, it’s important to point it out because the title they went for (“Report: Redesigned 27-Inch iMac to Feature LCD Display, Not Mini-LED”) is super confusing and makes no sense.

LCDs can have
- CCFL backlight (like Macbooks before 2008)
- LED backlight from the edges (like Macbooks before late 2021)
- LED backlight behind the whole surface (like the Pro Display XDR and MAYBE the upcoming 27” iMac Pro)
- miniLED backlight behind the whole surface (like the latest 12.9” iPad Pro M1 and the new M1 Pro MBPs)

They’re still all LCDs (which is not a bad thing per se, the LCDs in the new MBPs are awesome and the LCD in the Pro Display XDR is fantastic, it’s not like the word “LCD” should carry a stigma).

MicroLED is actually an emissive technology (like OLED), not a new way to provide a backlight to LCDs like miniLED.

I suspect people are confusing the new iMac with the iMac Pro, The iMac Pro Max, the iMac Pro Max ++ and the iMax (That one has a very big screen.)

Ross Young said he still believes it will have a miniLED.

He has a 100% track record. (not 90% or 99%, literally 100%)

Drama averted.
Move along.

Excellent. Maybe I can afford one now!

I don't know anyone who complained about the lack of miniLED on the current 27" 5K display.

Or maybe there's build to order option?

Ive been on MR for 10+ years. Theres always a pattern with these “rumored features”

Year 1: Rumor of awesome feature for next year.

Year 2: The feature is coming later this year > set backs prevent the feature releasing this year. Maybe next year.

Year 3: the awesome feature is coming! Leaks support it! Set backs prevent the feature releasing.

Year 4: rumoured feature was rumored wrong for years and is scrapped. completely different feature comes out.

Rinse repeat

Usually Jon Prosser is involved in these fake rumors. Where’s he at these days? 😂
