Report: Revamped Siri to Be at the Core of Apple's New AI Strategy

I'm on my third iPhone and have had Siri disabled since day one, 6+ years ago. Am I missing anything??
Same here. Google has been at it for decades. It seems that Apple's ability to write decent software sucks. They think about optimizing crap even before it is written. They don't buy many good companies. They don't know how to capitalize on a good buy. They should allow Siri to be replaced with ones from other companies.

Folks, don’t fall for this tutti-frutti, phones-baloney, plastic banana, good time, rock-n-roll PR hype from Apple. They didn’t “just decide” to work on AI or “just decide” to revamp Siri. They’ve been working on this for years. Although Apple feels the need to pretend they are making these monumental changes on a moment’s notice, this just isn’t possible with a complex OS.

Honestly I’d be very concerned about it becoming a dumb phone too.

So far, what we are hearing is mostly “Siri will be able to do things it used to do 5 years ago, like set timers.”

Cool. So nothing new.

The rest of the AI rumours are: “Apple is planning to make faster chips and use marketing jargon to link them to AI.”

Cool. So nothing new.

And then we keep hearing about rumours with OpenAI and Gemini which… are currently too late to make it to WWDC.

Cool. So. Maybe something new next year?

I am very skeptical. I have been saying for the past 10 years that Apple needs to figure out "AI" (I'd rather call it something like "IUI" (Interactional User Interface)) or Apple will eventually die. And believe me, I am not one of those who regularly predict the end of Apple, even before Steve Jobs came back from Next. I am also not one who would ever really consider switching to Android, until the last two years. When, not if, Google makes a compelling case for its own IUI that trounces Apple's, I will be switching, despite my general distaste of Google's trampling of privacy.

Tim Cook is obviously an organizational genius. His capacity to streamline supply lines, logistics and getting products to market is pretty much unparalleled anywhere. He's laser-focused on it. Maybe for this reason, or because he's old, he just doesn't get "AI" and never will. Put another way, he is so good at redesigning the box of what Apple does, he can't think outside the box. Apple needs an actual innovator. Someone who can make worthwhile and disruptive predictions of what people will want to be doing with their technology, not one or two iterations from where they are now, but in whole new categories and whole new ways of interfacing. It is quite clear this is not Tim Cook or anyone on his leadership team.

If this is true this makes me want to dump my Apple stock.

This more than anything else makes me question what in the actual **** they have been doing.

I tend to assume they are a lot smarter than me and have access to information I don't.

But my god, it took them until just LAST YEAR to realize that Siri is absolute garbage? ChatGPT came out in 2023. People in the know were talking about it before that. And they spent billions on a CAR?!

And NOW they realize the iPhone is threatened? After the horses are gone and the barn door is rotting off its hinges?

Good news is, almost all Google software is available on the iPhone. This is going to be Google Maps all over again.

You seem to have some issues re: accepting that Apple might have some flaws. During my time in management we had a natural monopoly as does Apple via App Store etc. Our group was 110% of the corps profit year over year (yeah 110%). Over time we stopped making optimal decisions, and starting making decisions that optimized stock price -- and the piper got paid when the juice ran out. Not saying it is the same as Apple, but there can be a lot of "management rot" that occurs when cash is flowing and the walls are high. I cannot say that Apple is doing this, but there are signs that Tim may have optimized shareholder returns vs. LTV. If so, it is due to folks like John G. not getting taken to the woodshed for under-delivering because maybe "...he gives great meetings." I am sure you have similar experience as mine hence your insights, so you can at least see the signs that this MIGHT be happening.
Fair point. That's not inconceivable.

My needs are simple. I just want Siri on my HomePods and Minis to stop asking me “who’s speaking” several times per week when I try to turn on a light, play music, or add something to the shopping list. I’m the only male in the house. How hard is this Apple Siri team? And please turn the mic sensitivity back up similar to how it used to be in 2018/2019 so I don’t have to yell commands at Siri. Anyone else remember how you could be standing across the room, whisper a command, and Siri would respond while it was playing music??? WTH happened to this???

You might want to dump it prior to wwdc. People are expecting way too much here.

Apple's shift to develop its own AI technology to keep up with competitors was today detailed in a The New York Times report.

Apple-Silicon-AI-Optimized-Feature-Siri-1.jpg

Citing sources familiar with Apple's work, the report explains that the decision to revamp Siri was taken early last year by Apple's most senior executives. Senior vice president of software engineering Craig Federighi and senior vice president of Machine Learning and AI Strategy John Giannandrea are said to have spent several weeks testing OpenAI's ChatGPT to understand the ways in which the competitor made Siri look antiquated. The Siri team purportedly failed to receive attention and resources compared to other groups inside Apple, and the company has struggled to recruit and retain leading AI researchers.

Apple executives are said to be concerned that AI threatens the iPhone's market share because it has the potential to become a more compelling operating system with an ecosystem of AI apps that undermine the App Store. Apple apparently fears the iPhone becoming a "dumb brick" compared with other technology.

This conclusion triggered a significant reorganization at Apple amid determination to catch up in the race to develop AI tools. The company moved to reallocate employees and resources toward AI, and the change of strategy was a contributing factor in the decision to cancel its electric vehicle project. Apple's upcoming iPhone 16 models will supposedly feature more memory to support AI features.
Apple is expected to reveal a series of AI tools at its WWDC keynote on June 10, including an improved version of Siri that is more conversational and capable, with the ability to "chat" rather than merely respond to individual queries. The company is working on making Siri better at handling tasks such as setting timers, creating calendar appointments, adding items to Reminders, and summarizing text. Apple plans to market the new version of Siri as a more private alternative to rival AI services because most requests will be processed on-device rather than remotely in data centres. See the full The New York Times article for more information.

FINALLY, IT ONLY TOOK 13 YEARS

I'm pretty skeptical that Apple will execute well on anything like this ... until they actually do.

Both Siri and voice dictation quality (even text auto-correct!) and accuracy seems to have gotten worse, not better, over time.

DOA

Im not sure why people complain so much… I usually use Siri on my watch to set reminder, grocery list, calendar and it is spot on, even in portuguese.

Also, transformer tech came out in 2017… that was when fundamentally LLM was enabled. So chill out a bit guys… Siri is coming out now because of this.

Where’s google assistant? Alexa? Google was the one that wrote the transformers model paper and never really brought it to its assistant.

...because it's super inconsistent and we all have widely divergent experiences with it.

The problem there is that once it fails enough or becomes unreliable in what it will/won't do, people just give up on it totally (understandable)

Some days Siri does things well for me..

Yesterday, with zero change in my device or situation, it wouldn't even stop music playing when asked ... without taking over 15 seconds to do it .. for some reason..

And things like auto-correct -- I really don't understand... I get things suggested to me that are gibberish ... like not even actual words. Whatever they are doing there is so bad

Consistency and accuracy has to go WAY up ... and that's before even thinking about AI uses, which have an even higher bar of required competence to gain mass adoption

Google Assistant is way better than Siri, and Siri NOW still isn't better than what Google Assistant was in 2014. I do miss using that on Samsungs and Pixels.

"hey Google, when is the next Dodgers game?", it will give me the time and date.

"Siri, when is the next Dodgers game?". "Ok, here's what I found".

Insiders from Apple's Siri team have expressed frustration over management's conservative decisions, which they feel are holding back innovation. After the release of ChatGPT, Apple quickly called an emergency meeting and decided to put their car project on hold to focus on improving Siri. This shift suggests that Apple is seriously stepping up its game, not merely following trends.

Siri, what time is it? I did a search for you. I have the results on your phone.

Siri, how’s the weather? From Wikipedia weather is…..

Watching a movie. Siri pause. Movie pauses. Take pp. Siri play. Opens 🎵app and begins playing a random playlist. 🙁

Siri power off Entertainment Center (ATV name) it powers off. Power on Entertainment Center. I’m unable to do that function.

So how do your “Siris” go?

My Homepod has the best hearing of all of our devices. I can be in the bedroom with the door closed and ask my phone “sir, resume playing” to restart the podcast I was listening to and the HomePod down the hall in the living room will start playing the music it was playing yesterday.

I want to be able to give unique names to each device so I can direct my requests to the right device.

Way before AI, Siri has been inferior to google for years. In my view, Apple has been riding the coat tails of Steve Jobs for so long, they just got too complacent. I’ve been running ChatCPT and MS CoPilot, with the later being more fluid and natural. Apple needs a home run, and if they can get out of their own way, they may be able to turn things around. 🤷‍♂️

If Apple wants a home run, how about AI on device that doesn’t phone home for every little item.
That is something I could see myself getting in touch with.

If you turn on the setting that shows what Siri hears on your phone screen, you can see what it hears vs what it does. I find that the transcription is usually exactly right. Where it goes wrong in how Siri interprets the meaning of that.

That’s why I am hopeful that a new Siri with an LLM brain will be able to do a much better job at inferring intent.
