Wellt this will obviously never happen because most consumers want a phone with a selfie camera ... also there are not enough of you for letting the customer choose to be financially profitable.
No arguments there! For me the ideal would be rear camera but no front camera on iPhone (which is a great camera but too small to be ideal for FaceTime), and front camera but no rear camera on iPad (which is crap as a camera but great for FaceTime.

It's the lack of iPad Pro without rear cameras that bothers me much more, because that camera bump is a much bigger inconvenience than the notch. It's also the harder one to explain - the (anecdotal) impression I get is that most iPad buyers agree with me and would rather not have the camera, even at the expense of the rear camera (especially if that brought a financial saving).

It's going to happen. I've been saying this for the past 2yrs. The Under Screen Ultrasonic Technology has been maturing rapidly (don't confuse this with the current Touch ID on current iPhones.) The security is there, it removes a lot of expensive from the phone, works with facemarks😉

The Lidar sensor goes on the back of the device. People won't have to subject their eyers to even more IR than already occurs naturally.

It will be interesting if the first implementation will be in conjunction with Farce ID remaining. I'm fairly certain it will. Then in another cycle Farce ID is history. Looking forward to the resurrection of myself and all the others in here that have endured years of targeted anger for being Farce ID haters. ;););)
As the old adage goes, don't count your chickens before they hatch. I look forward to farce id 2 and touch id 3 on the same phone. Face id is too convenient and fast to retire anytime soon prior to your phone being able to do a mind-meld with you. FACE id is not a 3dt situation.

But I do look forward to alternate authentication, because I can get away with a mask and one glove. ;)

In an era of face masks and coronas, this is needed. Dearly.

Except for the gloves everyone is wearing - which don't see your fingerprint through them.

Hard to see this other than for a SE replacement (otherwise its another cost component added to something that doesn't need it) - cannot see Apple dropping FaceID. I'll believe this one when we see it (other than a SE TouchID replacement).

This would be amazing if it is offered in addition to FaceID. Additional options are always welcome.

Speaking of additional options, I just found out the LED screen of my iPhone X has been contributing to my chronic migraines which means I can’t get the iPhone 12 which I’ve been sooo looking forward to =( Such a shame there isn’t an option for people who are sensitive to these displays

Half of the comments here say FaceID is better, half say TouchID is better. Personally I like TouchID better and wouldn’t want to give it up. It’s almost like they should use both so people have a choice!

Not sure why we would need this? I mean FaceID works pretty damn well for me.
I don't have to touch my 11 pro max except to swipe up.
The one thing I hope gets added to FaceID is the ability to have it go straight to my home screen. That way I can unlock my phone and get straight to asking Siri to do things for me.
In winter i wont even have to take my gloves off!

now that wearing masks has become more common.... FaceID has become less convenient...

I hope they bring back Touch ID.
You can train FaceID to recognize a mask. Not sure you can do the same for any fingerprint scanner with gloves though....

Believe it or not...
My work phone iPhone 8 reads the fingerprint just fine with a clear latex glove. I was surprised by that too.
Meanwhile, the damn thing would not read crap with just a bit of sweat on my hands without the gloves.
