Rather have Face ID (both would be nice, so I could choose) but I'm not touching my phone if I am out in public (which isn't very often lately).

Half of the comments here say FaceID is better, half say TouchID is better. Personally I like TouchID better and wouldn’t want to give it up. It’s almost like they should use both so people have a choice!
Except a lot of what people liked bout TouchID was that you could do it with feel, which isn't the case with existing under-screen implementations, so people who like that still wouldn't have the choice.

I'd love to have both options. Also, let's scifi things up and turn Face ID into Retina ID, since facemasks are making Face ID virtually worthless.

It would be cool if the mid-tier 5.4" and 6.1" had FaceID with the smaller notch and the 6.1" and 6.7" Pro tier had either some kind of hidden camera or at most a hole punch with the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. That would be something worth upgrading to! Especially if the high-end camera rumors are true. I'd also like to see 6GB of RAM since using the three camera system often causes background apps to fully eject from memory, along with a ProMotion Display, 5nm A14, 5G, and a sharper wide-angle camera.

The squared off edges and slightly larger footprint along with reduced logic board size should lead to larger battery capacity unless they make it thinner, but that would be offset by new features. I heard a rumor about it being thinner but if the rumors of the high end camera system, ProMotion, and 5G are true then it's going to need a bigger battery, and probably will need the 6GB of RAM for the new camera system which will also use more battery. Unless the 5nm chip really is that much more efficient and/or they incorporate newer, denser battery tech.

I'd love to have both FaceID and TouchID under the display. I need to wear a mask every time I leave home, so FaceID is not an option anymore. Having TouchID would help. FaceID would still work at home, so I really want both of them available on a phone.

This rendering looks sexy as hell. I hope it turns out exactly like that, Touch ID and all.

Just hope it doesn't use PWM for the display. That makes it a nonstarter.

As long as they don't get rid of Face ID and you can place your finger anywhere on the screen (not useful otherwise), then I am cool with this. I don't really see the point myself, but it is what it is.

They are not equally secure. It makes no sense to have two when one is more secure than the other. That's like locking the door and leaving a window open.
That’s not an apt analogy. It’s more like having two very good locks on the same door and only fastening one of them. And giving people the option does make sense because there are times when Face ID is very impractical (phone flat on a table, while driving, while wearing a mask, to name a few) and Touch ID would be superior. And yes, I’m aware there are situations in which Touch ID is impractical - that’s exactly why the option would be good.

This might be the holy grail of iPhones for me. FaceID and TouchID. Collectively they could work as an either or to unlock, and together for an extra layer of security.

When FaceID came out, there was a lot of discussions about FaceID being superior to TouchID. Security and ergonomics wide.

Yes but this doesn’t mean that TouchID is insecure ...

Maybe, but one is much more complicated to recreate than the other one.

You are in the minority then.

If you don’t like it, don’t use it. It’s as easy as that.

I would actually say that he is in the majority, because he supports the ability to choose between TouchID and FaceID

I understand practical side, but security side doesn't make much sense.

I'm not sure it makes sense for Apple to put all those in display fingerprint scanners inside the iPhones just because someone might prefer a fingerprint scanner. I also know that everyone can't be pleased, so just don't use it if you don't like it. I think it works in reverse just as well.

There are more things I like about TouchID than there are I like about FaceID. Ideally in the future you could use either/or or even both or even all 3 (including PIN). One of the things this new TouchID wouldn't provide is the tactile feedback/button. I really like being about to feel the button and unlock all in one motion when picking up the phone or pulling it out of my pocket etc. Using that method I unlock the phone long before I ever have to look at it.

Both biometric security options have their advantages and disadvantages. [But I won’t get into that.] I do think Apple will offer both biometric security options,
However; I suspect they will only include both options on the more expensive iPhone model, likely trying to persuade the consumer to purchase that specific phone for an additional feature. That would be a very Apple-like-move, what personally myself, I would welcome to have both options, as it would make it that much more convenient in terms of accessing the phone in different scenarios where it’s necessary.

oh yes, time to retire annoying Face ID.

FaceID was created because China requires it. I love how they tried to PR spin that fun little hidden bit of trivia. I always wondered WTF was up with that feature until I heard that the CCP wants to scan faces if you want to sell cell phones in China. BOOM! Now I know.
