My parents, in their late 80s, would find Face ID quite difficult to manage. But a Touch ID like the ipad air’s would work fine.
My mom, whose fingerprints are somehow nonexistent (seriously, those fingertips are completely flat!), couldn't make Touch ID work if her life depended on it and she's a senior too.

With Face ID on the other hand everything just works.
Apart from setting up Face ID I can't see a downside to it for older people. If it doesn't work it just falls back to a regular passcode.

I love having 30,000 laser beams shot directly into my face every time I pick up the phone.
They're not laser beams. They're infrared, which is harmless. You get a thousand times more infrared standing in front of a hot stove, or outside on a sunny day, then you do from your phone. IR is low energy light and causes no harm.

Seriously, don't worry about FaceID. It's harmless.

Face ID is borderline useless in harsh sunlight. (And in many other situations, depending on your and/or your device's position.) It is definitely not better than touch ID, it's just different.
What?? as someone who resides in southern CA where it is bright/sunny with hardly clouds if any by mid day I have never had an issue with Face ID in the harsh light

You don't need to hold the phone up to scan properly. If you're going to be using your phone then you're going to be looking at it and any way you look at it then Face ID will unlock. Unless you're phone is at an extreme angle or you're far enough away from it.

You can unlock Face Id by keeping your phone down. You just need to look down for a split second to give attention and it will unlock.

How are you using your phone? lol
Looking straight down is unnatural when sneaking a glance at something. So no it does not work perfectly if not in a perfect position. On the other hand it will somehow unlock my face with my motorcycle helmet on and basically just my eyes and to of my nose visible. Not sure why anyone would be against options. What you might not need someone else would. Touch ID under the screen would be great, if it worked well. If not it would be better without it rather then a tool that does not work well.

Touch ID is nice but it takes an extra second for Face ID so I don't see the point of wasting space in the chassis for it when more space could be used for battery and/or anything else.

An example how Apple were slightly ahead of the game when they introduced it with the iPhone X

People whined and wanted touch ID back and yet, in most situations, FaceID is easier, and seamless.

I have an iPad with touchID in the sleep/wake button and it's really unintuitive to me to have to touch it to unlock the iPad - much preferring the easier faceID. A pro with faceid works better.

Sure both have limitations - faceID with masks was a problem, and yet touchID is a problem with gloves, and wet fingers etc... on balance FaceID is better.

So, may years on we are *still* wanting a return of TouchID? why? Sure the under screen implementation was a bit more 'seamless' on android phones but as a technology it doesnt need revisiting...

I wear two masks everyday, and FaceID doesn't have any problems unlocking my phone. It only has a problem unlocking when I'm wearing my masks and a motorcycle helmet.

I appreciate that many consider FaceID as "more secure" and whatnot, but TouchID was sufficient and far more convenient.

About 75% of the time, I'm simply looking at my phone to check notification previews. I can't stand my phone unlocking and launching the app (potentially marking items as "READ") when I simply want to "split" notification stacks and scroll through them.

Additionally, the multi-step FaceID process when it comes to payments is just inconvenient. Having to hold it near the terminal, hold it to your face, make sure it scanned, double-click without re-locking your phone, then holding it back near the terminal is just a bad UX. Definitely "more secure", but a bad UX IMO.

A shame, as I was hoping that the "capture button" might offer an opportunity for both methods (of which I'd use only TouchID) to be present on the iPhone 16.

This article reminds me of something that I've been wondering for a while - why doesn't Apple offer the 2022 SE in their refurbished store?

What does this mean for Macs and iPads still using Touch ID?

Unfortunately it means they are insecure as fingerprints are useless FaceID is way better, and worse is that they will never be hacked as it is TouchID does not work so no one can ever log in to them.

It doesn't work for you, but always worked fantastically for me and continues to on my personal and work Macs and my iPad.

I don't get why people are so against touch ID coming back ALONGSIDE FaceID - would give everyone the ability to use the tech they want.

I miss Touch ID even 2.5 years into owning a TouchID iPhone.
Because it’s a waste of money and resources to have two different unlock mechanisms.

Put me in the camp of people who say Touch ID is useless. It never worked for me and I just disabled it.

We don't need Touch ID. For a while I did want under display touch ID in addition to Face ID but Face ID works so much better. There is no need to use anything else.

Face ID "just works" because I don't need to think about it. Unless we got full display sensor for Touch ID then you'd need to make sure you placed your finger in the exact spot for recognition.
face id has always been and will always be garbage. touch id was way way better. but this is good news, it means I wont need to update next year.

I think we will see under-screen Face ID, and I hope we never see under-screen fingerprint reader. Android has already done both for years, and it seems pretty well established now that under-screen fingerprint readers just suck. Nobody likes them, they are a major downgrade from the capacitive ones they used to put on the back of the phone.

Last I checked Samsung is already able to hide the camera under a few pixels that are a little fuzzier than the rest. Never seen it in person, looked to me like it would be annoying. If Apple can fully hide it I would love to see Dynamic Island disappear as a quirk of history. Quit invading the main part of the display, Apple.
