grabbing popcorn and awaiting the deluge of “FaceID works perfectly for me me me why would anyone need TouchID?” As well as “FaceID is the latest and greatest tech who are you Luddites who want to use this old skool fingerprints, ewww”

🍿

Ha exactly. It's almost like different things work better for different people. Heresy!

It would be nice if Apple offered the option, but I don't see that happening.

Choice. That's not iPhone.

Glad to read this. Touch ID’s return strangely seemed to be a perennial rumour.

In my experience, Face ID performs better than Touch ID in almost every circumstance. Apple have made good accommodations to broaden its adaptability.

I love how Face ID adjusts itself over time, instead of having to redo fingerprints (which I find I have to do quite frequently due to dry skin on my fingertips changing the pattern).

I hope Apple bring Face ID to additional products in their lineup soon – iPad Air & iPad would be great (as would Apple TV / HomePod when the rumoured versions with FaceTime cameras are introduced).

The one thing I’ll miss about Touch ID when it’s replaced is the red fingerprint animation shown when setting up.

Why would it? Face ID is so much better, faster, more seamless..... The other day I was using my mothers old iPhone 8 and found it so annoying to have to move my finger over the Touch ID to unlock the phone... I've gotten so used to just looking at my phone and having it happen seamlessly.

Bit of a different perspective here. When Face ID was first announced a lot of blind people were concerned because they didn't think it would work for them, especially for those with prosthetic eyes. When VoiceOver is on, it disables the attention aware feature, so people thought this would mean someone could pick up your phone, point it at your face and then run off without you ever knowing. Face ID has always worked fine for me, even with attention on; one of my eyes focusses but the other does not.

Also, some blind people like being able to unlock and use their iPhones while in their pockets while wearing ear buds, and are upset that Apple took that use case away. I don't agree with this take.

As for Apple Pay, I do agree with a post above that Touch ID was easier, but Face ID is perfectly useable. I just double click and authenticate, and then hold the phone up to the terminal. It's much easier to just use my Apple Watch, although I've found this harder to since upgrading to watchos 10. So then I have to, gasp, pull my phone out of my pocket. Yeah, definition of a first world problem! lol

What?? as someone who resides in southern CA where it is bright/sunny with hardly clouds if any by mid day I have never had an issue with Face ID in the harsh light
Yeah not sure what that nonsense was about. I live in Las Vegas and go hiking in the desert and have not had this issue ever not even once. They must live on Mercury.

Unless you have your phone at the angle where Face ID "works" - no, it doesn't. I want to be able to unlock my iPhone from a distance, at any angle, like when I'm on laying on the couch or in bed and want to check something without having to position the phone in a way where Face ID can scan my face.
Turn off attention awareness (or however the option is called).

This just in, Lighting cable will not be returning to Iphone... ! :p
Passcode works just fine... Ill switch over to face ID when my bank card includes the same technology, if a pin works to protect all my money, then I guess it works just fine for all my data too :p

In a new post, they explained that most of the equipment originally used to manufacture the chips required for the iPhone's version of ‌Touch ID‌ has apparently now been permanently shut down […] suggesting that Apple has no plans to resurrect ‌Touch ID‌ as a method to authenticate on the ‌iPhone‌ in the immediate future.
I don't see how these two things are related.
Of course the equipment for making home buttons with Touch ID has been shut down. Nobody expected those to ever come back.
The rumors were all about under-screen Touch ID (or perhaps power buttons with Touch ID). If those come out, that old equipment would still be shut down, because they'd be manufactured completely differently.

I do wish Touch ID would make a comeback. I miss being able to unlock my phone without worrying about the level of sunlight, if I am looking at the phone just the right way, or in dim lighting. I could unlock the phone without picking it up off the desk and making eye contact to just see an alert or dismiss a reminder.

I appreciate that many consider FaceID as "more secure" and whatnot, but TouchID was sufficient and far more convenient.

About 75% of the time, I'm simply looking at my phone to check notification previews. I can't stand my phone unlocking and launching the app (potentially marking items as "READ") when I simply want to "split" notification stacks and scroll through them.

Additionally, the multi-step FaceID process when it comes to payments is just inconvenient. Having to hold it near the terminal, hold it to your face, make sure it scanned, double-click without re-locking your phone, then holding it back near the terminal is just a bad UX. Definitely "more secure", but a bad UX IMO.
Use an Apple Watch. (;

Fingerprint unlock is much more useful IMO than face id, esp as a glasses wearer, rain on your glasses, hello passcode. Phone on desk and want to unlock? Better off with fingerprint. Virus pandemic meaning you need to wear a face mask? Fingerprint means you can unlock (at least for the first half untill apple probably lowered the security to make it work with a facemask).

Touch id would be amazing.

I wonder if the iPad uses different chips or if this would also mean that future iPads will switch to Face ID.
Btw – I don't like the "button version" of Touch ID in current iPads (it's nice for unlocking the iPad but not to authenticate in apps since button placement is not optimal for that), this has hold me from upgrading my iPad 6.

I wanted to offer some advice that may be helpful regarding mobile payments. Are you aware that you don’t have to hold your phone near the terminal to launch the Wallet app? Instead of doing the first step of holding your phone near the terminal to launch the Wallet app, you can simply take the phone out of your pocket/purse and double-click the sleep/wake button to invoke the Wallet app which will bring up your default card requiring FaceID to authorize the payment. You can then hold the phone near the terminal and the payment will be completed. Likewise, if your phone is already unlocked and in hand, you can double-click the sleep/wake button to launch the Wallet app to authorize the card and then hold it near the terminal to complete the payment. When I know I’m about to pay, I’ll do this ahead of time so all I have to do is hold the phone up to the terminal to complete the payment.

Many people seemed to have forgotten the Year 2020, the year that when you are out and about, you need to have face mask, and at the time, alternate appearance with face mask is not yet available on iOS...

I agree that Raise to Wake + Face ID is very convenient, or even just Face ID, however, Apple still makes some iPad models with Touch ID so for sure Touch ID will be back... They might also go the route of Samsung that uses ultrasonic fingerprint reader...

It doesn't work for you, but always worked fantastically for me and continues to on my personal and work Macs and my iPad.

I don't get why people are so against touch ID coming back ALONGSIDE FaceID - would give everyone the ability to use the tech they want.

I miss Touch ID even 2.5 years into owning a TouchID iPhone.
My favorite feature of Touch ID is allowing you to unlock your phone every 4 hours, with Face ID thats no longer an option. Technically i was unlocking my phone 3-5 times a day. Now some won't mind that but for someone that unlocks their device hundreds of time a day thats annoying. Then there are times it won't even recognize my face that just unlocked the phone one minute ago and I'm wearing an Apple Watch.
