It will be a huge technological achievement if apple is ever able to make under display biometric authentication that matches the original Touch ID or Face ID's quality, security, and accuracy. I hope they're able to pull it off.

I still hate Face ID. Pure marketing. Touch ID was faster and in practice more secure. With Face ID there has been so many instances of sons unlocking a device, even twin brothers would not unlock a Touch ID secured device.
Also it is a huge safety issue to unlock the phone in the car, with Touch ID I could unlock without distracting my face and eyes from the road. When waking my dog it is a juggling act to move my phone to my face with my dog pulling the leash in the other hand in order to be able to unlock my WhatsApp or to select a podcast. Face ID needs that I am totally aligned and close. For me I should have the right to choose which unlocking method I want to use or have both, as in virtually ALL android phones.
And in my iPad it it 50% useful. 50% of the time I end up typing the password because my face is not aligned or the camera is blocked. A total mess. Really hate it. Not a single benefit for me. People loves it because apple told you that it is super safe, etc. but if you us a SE phone you realize Touch ID is actually faster and waaaaaay more convenient and reliable (unless you use gloves). Really dislike it after all
This time.

Unless you have your phone at the angle where Face ID "works" - no, it doesn't. I want to be able to unlock my iPhone from a distance, at any angle, like when I'm on laying on the couch or in bed and want to check something without having to position the phone in a way where Face ID can scan my face.
EXACTLY!!!. Face ID forces me to act in the way the device wants, not in the way I want or find convenient or comfortable. Tim never uses his devices…

I'm happy with the speed/accuracy of FaceID, but it would have been nice for those times FaceID doesn't work. My passcode is over 10 characters and it's a bitch when FaceID fails in low light / etc

No one in the world has been able to develop that tech. Except everyone else but Apple. But Apple tells the story that those devices are not secure but have you heard of actual security incidents in those devices?. Nope. Even less than with Face ID actually.

Apple's iPhone 16 lineup will not see the return of Touch ID fingerprint authentication technology, a new report claims.

Touch-ID-Fingerprint-Sensor-Under-Display-Feature-2.jpg

The information comes from an integrated circuit expert on Weibo with a track record for sharing information about Apple's plans. In a new post, they explained that most of the equipment originally used to manufacture the chips required for the iPhone's version of Touch ID has apparently now been permanently shut down, with the only remaining units used for the third-generation iPhone SE, suggesting that Apple has no plans to resurrect Touch ID as a method to authenticate on the iPhone in the immediate future. It is also worth pointing out that there are no noteworthy rumors about the return of Apple's fingerprint scanning technology for the iPhone 16 lineup that are still dependable.

Reports suggest that the fourth-generation iPhone SE will feature Face ID, replacing the last iPhone model that still features Touch ID. Even so, rumors persist that Apple is working on under-display fingerprint technology that could debut around 2026 – the same time frame that the company is ostensibly planning to move Face ID under the display of the device.

The Weibo source was first to report that the iPhone 14 would retain the A15 Bionic chip, with the A16 being exclusive to the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro models. They recently said that the chip designed for the upcoming iPhone 16 and ‌iPhone 16‌ Plus will be made using a distinct manufacturing process, differing fundamentally from the A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 15 Pro, to reduce production costs.

Terrible decision. FaceID is one of the biggest reasons I don't want an iPhone. The damage on your eyesight is dangerous and not worth paying a fortune to get worse eyesight.

I work with my hands and tend to wear off the fingerprints on my thumbs and first few fingers. Touch ID was not working reliably for me. When I get fingerprinted at work for background checks the inkless method does not work so they haul out the glass plate and ink (which work better but they hate using.)

But, I found a solution, Pinky fingers don't get used so much and have much less wear on the skin. These prints are very reliable.

I think this is the cause of much of the problem, people try and use their most-used fingers to unlock the phone. Better to use your least-used fingers,

On the phone I really don't like faceID. It sucked during the extended flu season. It doesn't always recognize my face anyway (and I've done countless rescans) and it hates angles. It's also annoying when trying to pay in a terminal with Apple Pay as I have to do a forced drive by my face first instead of just putting my thumb on it.

But on iPad Pro it's the worst. Always have to do a forced lean-over to unlock. Hate it.

So with all of this, these "news" are sad but expected. We haven't really heard much about them planning on offering both. I would love to have the "best of both worlds", but seemingly I encounter issues that other people either don't have or don't mind.

Personally I just prefer Touch ID to having the phone unlock whenever I look at it. I want to choose to when to unlock, by physically using my finger.

I'm not sure why people are being so rude and negative with regards users hoping it will come back.

Don't forget about having to remove sunglasses with Face ID, which is a PITA. If you can fix this by turning off attention awareness, then it's not as secure as Touch ID.

I don’t see the problem. Other manufacturers have been offering this for years now. What's this “trying to make it work” nonsense?
It’s like Apple is still figuring out how to make fire, while the rest of the world is having a barbecue.

...you can simply take the phone out of your pocket/purse and double-click the sleep/wake button to invoke the Wallet app which will bring up your default card requiring FaceID to authorize the payment...
Yup, appreciate the input, and that is helpful in that regard, but my bigger problem is with the "intrusiveness" of FaceID. TouchID requires intent, FaceID requires a simple glance. Simply not a fan. Not worth hopping to another phone OS or anything, but would definitely appreciate the option for both.

I gave Face ID a try, by using a facial expression (mouth open), to kind of encrypt the password, so to say. It worked for about two days, after which the iPhone started to recognise me with my mouth closed. At that point I switched to pin entry. Face ID has too many positives and it's not secure, basically. I'd prefer that my Apple Watch would unlock the phone, not the other way around, like it happens now. Tbh the Apple Watch is the real personal thing to always have with myself, the phone is just an annoying extension to it, especially now that it doesn't have Touch ID anymore.

Touch ID is completely worthless for anyone who builds things or uses their hands for a living. I’ll gladly look at the phone at inconvenient angles over a finger print reader that won’t read my fingers AT ALL.
