you forgot case protect it if dropped. you can be super carefuly when u use the naked phone but it only needs to happen once.

Agreed. I bought a case because it saved my 3GS countless times when I dropped it down onto the sidewalk and such. Well worth $30. I even got several compliments on my nice blue case. :p

The slippery back on the iPhone 4 essentially guarantees a drop within the year.

It's less slippery than the original iPhone with the aluminum back.

Really? Do most people here resell their phones when the next one comes out? I've never even though of doing that haha.

But then you have to pay the full price for the next phone? So it's like getting the 2yr price on it if you add the price you got for selling your old phone?

While the diehard fans might upgrade at full (or reduced for early eligibility) price and lose money this way, many of us perform upgrade swaps or have an expensive enough plan that allows us to upgrade at the $199/299 price yearly.

I'm looking to recoup some of the expense after 2 years with this plight.
I suffered badly with this when the 3G was the latest and greatest, in 2008-2009.

wow just clicked the link, Thank you for posting.

I guess I would say you were/past the kind of the person I am referring to
I'm curious as to what the mindset is for 10x cases ?

I've seen someone here with 20+ cases.. I just can't imagine that as a sound investment.. you would have to sell the phone at NIB price just to try to break even. Although at at level of excess I imagine things like fashion and style have to play into a reason for getting different cases.

I don't know.. I still think my phone looks amazing, AND, I'm now able to grip it without worrying it'll slip and place it down without it sliding around. Oh yeah, the added protection isn't bad either.

Looks pretty good, but I was referring to something like this

yes somewhere, down there there is an iphone 4

some good replies

as for those who are showing anger or just saying " why do you care" what did I strike too close to home? It's a forum guys

I'm not completely against all of these products. even I purchased an sgp oleophobic shield. But I heard some guy had an iPhone 3G wrapped in a shield, with a screen protector, wrapped in an otterbox defender and then still encased in a belt holder

You should have quit while you were ahead.

Your OP was mildly annoying. Now you just reek of arrogance and self importance.

Another one down. My friend just shattered the backing. $199 at Apple Store.

Why does anyone care what people do with the products they buy?

You want a case, you use a case.

You want it naked use it naked.

You payed for it, use it as you see fit.

We are in the age of Facebook and Twitter, where your business is everybody's business. But I agree with you - it's my phone and I'll do what I please with it.

Lets do some math ( for the typical user)

You paid $300 for a 32gb iPhone 4
You paid $30 for a case
You paid $20 more for a full body shield to protect the phone from said case
You paid $20 for a screen protector

In total you Paid $370

You never get to see your phone, you never get to see how good it looks out of the box. Instead you use this frankeinstein phone that is covered in plastics and clear shields that will never look as good as glass and metal
and you have to put up with the fact that several accessories now don't fit

Oh and plastic scratches easier than metal and glass, so you have a phone covered in scratches and lint around the edges... unless you spend more money on a new case or a new screen protector.

WHY ?
You scream RE-SALE VALUE !!!

And you may be correct, but right off the bat you have to sell it for $70 more just to break even with a phone that was used normally. Hey maybe you'll get $100 more than one that has light scratches on it.. so that's $30 more over 1-2 years. Most people who sold their iPhone 3G's for the iPhone 4 were easily able to sell it for more than the upgrade cost of the new phone, regardless of condition

So lets recap, You spent $370 for the newest best looking phone made out of expensive materials and covered it in cheap plastics to keep it in pristine shape. Even though you will never see your perfect phone and all you really did is keep the phone mint for the next person who will buy the phone.

in 1-2 Years Iphone 4 will be a paperweight so it won't matter.

Remember that there're still countries where the iPhone hasn't been released or the latest model hasn't.
And folks will always want a contract-free device, that they can unlock, etc.
So re-sale value - whilst it might not matter for 'other' devices. It does matter for an iPhone, because people just want it.

I don't know how cheap the OP is selling their used phones for...but I've made about $200 per iphone, I bought the 3g for 249+ tax (13% in canada) and sold for 640, and I've also bought a 16 gb 3gs for 199.99 (when I picked up a data plan for my iphone haha) and sold that for 500 flat.

If the op is selling their phone for so cheap, mind hooking me up when you let go of your iphone4? I could certainly use an extra 200 bucks to go towards some iphone5 or whatnot :D

PS I'm located in Markham Ontario, so I guess the used phone market is much different than from the US. if you check redflagdeals.com or even kijiji in Toronto, you can see that most 3gs are still going for ~400 dollars on our local classifieds. So yes, having a pristine phone does help resale value (marks how much profit you make haha) up here in the north ;)

oh and personally, I find that apple products are THE best when it comes to resale value, I bought a 2.2 ghz macbook from an apple store in California for university, and I sold it about 1 month ago for 600 bucks. This was the mid-tier macbook in 2007. Honestly, apple products keep their resale value ridiculously well. So it's always a good "investment" to try to keep it in the best condition you can.

Just my 2 cents. :)

Yes yes yes we get it...
Monthly service fees added to the cost of the phone.

The monthly service fee is paid anyway regardless of the phone you have +/- data plan.

No. The cost of the phone is hidden in monthly fees.

As long as you really think that you can sell your old and used phone for more money than you paid for it years ago new you don't get it. At all.

Some of you guys are real you-know-whats. I get over wanting to keep my phone crisp after a week at most. Phones are bound to be dropped or scratched in your pocket just as cars are bound to get minor nicks and other small things. It's life! I would never want to meet the "typical user" who buys a case, screen protector and the body shield. Get over your $300 phone and stop treating it better than something that doesn't deserve it as much. Unless you're materialistic and have nothing larger in life to have concerns about. My iPhone 3G which I have had since release date could pass off as fair condition, when in fact it's been dropped out of apartment windows and tossed down steps and gone scuba diving with me on multiple occasions. Yes it's been completely submerged for extended amounts of time and it still works like a charm. Grow up!

Are you really trying to tell people how they should use a product they have bought?

No offense, but when you start buying my iPhones for me, then you can tell me how and how not to protect it.

I have to agree with you.

Obviously people have a right to use their phone however they want, but in my opinion, all these cases and covers really ruin the experience of owning a phone designed by one of the best industrial designers of our time.

I realize some people don't care about design, and thats their right. However I've treated all my iPhones like phones, and none of them have broken and all of them held great resale value. Maybe I could have got $20 - $40 more if my phones were in mint condition when selling them, but I saved at least that much by not buying cases and screen covers. :)

Depending on the kind of screen protector you use, you can hardly tell that there's anything on the screen.

Agreed with the OP on alot of points.

Just sit back and enjoy the phone. It is not a Lambourgini. It is not some diamond ring.

I got a flawless phone, but I don't expect real world use and abuse to keep it flawless forever and ever. I am already at that stage when I don't always clean it when I first bought it. The phone did crash on a few times, so I am starting to NOT care if it is perfect. And some people to keep it perfect for the next person when they will never fully experience it themselves?

Now I do have a bumper just for grip and lip. Last I checked, it didn't scratch the metal band. But if it did, oh well! It will be covered anyway. I'm just waiting for my free Pixelskin HD case because I need the comfort. The bumper digs into my palm after holding it awhile.

But to those who put side protection, get a new hobby, make friends, or just put saran wrap over it. OCD folks are already "sick" in the mind. They are letting a "phone" have mind control over these greedy, zombies. Don't get me wrong, it is your phone and you can do whatever you want. But there should be a limit to things. The next buyer won't give a crap about the dead pixel you noticed or the micro-scratches on the screen. They won't notice. It is like children who are spoiled rotten. You need to scold them and limit the things they can have. Life isn't perfect. We all will get older and less attractive eventually. We are all flawed. Nothing is forever. Two years isn't a long time either, so why care so much about phone protection perfection?

The thing is, you don't get to decide what those limits are. That's up to the individual who laid out the money for their phone. And crazy as what they do may seem (and I've seen some outrageous setups), it's not yours, mine, or anyone else's place to talk down to them.

See that's were you are wrong

We aren't saying that people don't have the right, we are saying we think they are wrong to do so

IF people can be openly crazy OCD on this forum, then thoughts on the opposite end of the spectrum must also be allowed to exist

Let's look at it this way

Sure if you own a Ferrari you can slap one of those Giant front end leather covers

But that just looks tacky, and really shows that the person is cheap/more concerned about money than actually enjoying the product
