I use the SGP Carbon Fiber back and Black iPhone 4 Bumper Case because I think it looks better with them. I don't use plastic screen protectors for the same reasons that you listed in the original post.

Sure if you own a Ferrari you can slap one of those Giant front end leather covers

But that just looks tacky, and really shows that the person is cheap/more concerned about money than actually enjoying the product

You can't compare a $200 phone to a $190,000 car. I get your point, but still.
Just like how someone is protecting their phone, I would assume, Ferrari owners give their car a full detail probably every 2 weeks. Obviously that's an assumption but I just can't seem to accept the fact that you are comparing a $200 phone to a Ferrari.

If you want to use that comparison though that's like saying this; OCD iPhone users only take out their phone and use it 4 times a week just like how Ferrari owners (generally) don't put over 6,000 miles on their car per year. And that 6,000 miles alone is pushing it, some don't put over 2,500.

Also, most people who own a Ferrari can afford to repaint it should they not feel comfortable with the way the paint is wearing, not all iPhone users can afford to drop another $400 to get a pretty new phone.

All I'm saying it you can't compare something that's $200, to something that is $190,000.

Interesting thread to say the least!! ;)

I just got my iPhone4, and I bought and then returned the Zagg. I decided against a screen protector, as I'm pretty careful with my phone anyway. I just don't think it is truly necessary for me.

I'm waiting for the PixelSkin HD...and I'm naked until it arrives from Apple under the free case program. I'll use it to help with grip, and to protect the phone in case I drop it.

By the way, as for resale value...I had an 8gig 2g iphone that I paid $99 for at Best Buy and used for nearly 2 years, and just traded it in at Radio Shack for $107.25 towards the Iphone 4. So I picked up the 16g iPhone4 for under $100 out the door. Pretty darn good I think!!:)

Yip, got to say I agree with that. It's like those people who buy a new sofa or car and leave the plastic on the seats to protect from damage. I don't get it, just enjoy the product while you have it. A hundred or so £/$/€'s over a few years is not much and I bet most of these people don't spend as much attention to their spending when it comes to groceries, fuel and other everyday items where they could make bigger savings.

I never bother with cases but I received my free bumper and I am actually using it. But only because it actually makes the phone more comfortable to hold, had never intended on leaving it on but I think I will now.

The difference is you but a sofa for pure feel and comfort, the phone is what's in side it and the screen you look at. A good case shouldn't effect how the phone performs.

c'mon guys, its just a phone.

i swear, i'm starting to get the feeling that Apple intentionally makes the phone design inherently fragile so that the accessory industry + apple can make more money off their fanbase.

Steve Jobs used to say this, but I do recall when the first/second generation of iPod's came out, he mentioned how he likes to use his iDevices without any skins, and that having scratches on the device builds 'character' into it. For the first time, I'm actually agreeing with Jobs on this one.

I put both a case and screen protector on my phone in the first hour I received it. The are several reasons:

  1. Having paid so much for phone, I am in no position to pay even more hard-earned dosh to repair accidental damage. The case and screen protector reduce the possibility of that.
  2. I go on a lot of day walks and I use a battery case in order to use GPS for extended periods so I can track my route. The battery case also allows for extended use during travel.
  3. Instead of selling my iPhone, my kid is inheriting it as a hand-me-down after I upgrade. The battery case should preserve the iPhone's internal battery so we get a few more years out of the phone. In this regard, treating the phone as an environmentally expensive device makes more sense that simply viewing it as a disposable item. Disposable items are killing this planet.

Lets do some math ( for the typical user)

You paid $300 for a 32gb iPhone 4
You paid $30 for a case
You paid $20 more for a full body shield to protect the phone from said case
You paid $20 for a screen protector

In total you Paid $370

You never get to see your phone, you never get to see how good it looks out of the box. Instead you use this frankeinstein phone that is covered in plastics and clear shields that will never look as good as glass and metal
and you have to put up with the fact that several accessories now don't fit

Oh and plastic scratches easier than metal and glass, so you have a phone covered in scratches and lint around the edges... unless you spend more money on a new case or a new screen protector.

WHY ?
You scream RE-SALE VALUE !!!

And you may be correct, but right off the bat you have to sell it for $70 more just to break even with a phone that was used normally. Hey maybe you'll get $100 more than one that has light scratches on it.. so that's $30 more over 1-2 years. Most people who sold their iPhone 3G's for the iPhone 4 were easily able to sell it for more than the upgrade cost of the new phone, regardless of condition

So lets recap, You spent $370 for the newest best looking phone made out of expensive materials and covered it in cheap plastics to keep it in pristine shape. Even though you will never see your perfect phone and all you really did is keep the phone mint for the next person who will buy the phone.

best post on this forum in a LOONG time

I can barely hold back my laughter when I see invisibilesheild+full body cases on the IP4
