The low-end mini is severely underspec'ed in RAM and hard disk, and the higher model is too expensive.

DON'T open the box until you see what happens! That way, you can return it if they update the MBPs and if not, you can keep yours.

I have 14 days to return it according to local consumer laws. But I really need it for a lot of things, so it might be hard to wait :)

Aren't just the MacBooks being updated in this refresh? I can't see the MacBook Pro's changing soon soon after the last refresh, unless it's really small speed/capacity bumps.

AnDy

That's what I was thinking too. It's way too soon for the MBP line to be updated again. Might be something really minor, yes. I certainly can't see anything major to update right now.

I think a MacBook Pro spped bump is very likely for this one simple reason: Whatever Apple does to the MacBook will bring it up to or above the specs of the MacBook Pro. Apple needs more than an aluminum casing to get people to spend that extra couple of hundred dollars on the Pro model.

This is interesting. I think they will bump the specs of the iMac and the Mac mini. The iMac might see a design overhaul (get rid of the "chin") to make it go nicer with the 24" LED ACD (also height).

I don't know what they could do to the MBP lineup, since they recently rebranded, redesigned (slight) and bumped them specwise. I'm hoping it doesn't get updated since I just ordered a MBP to be delivered tomorrow

Well if the MBP does get updated then you all can thank me too - just ordered a new 15 incher :D

While a new Mac Mini would be great for the livingroom's 50" Vizio, what I'm really waiting for is one more speed bump/increase of value for the Mac Pro. I am the proud owner of a 2002 Quicksilver Power Mac G4. God what an old computer! I have been waiting and waiting to buy for several years. Every time I get together the money, I have to pony it up for something else family related. Finally I feel like I won't asked to use the computer fund money on anything else other than what we've saved for! Yeah!

I'm guessing though that we won't see a refresh on those until January 2010 or so. Meh.

I can't be disappointed with the refresh.

When I found out that Leopard was the end of the OS line for my iMac G5 I went ahead and upgraded - to my regret. I had to restart an unusual number of times during the upgrade. Then it would not let me in at all for awhile. Then I was in by booting off the install dvd and running disk repair over and over. Also did fsck and reset PRAM etc... Then it worked for about a week pretty nicely then kernel panics and finally, nothing. I opened it up and there were a bunch of fat leaky capacitors . So I start researching that issue and find out that they had a repair program that ended last January :(

So, even though I am ordering capacitors to see if I can get some more life out of that machine, I figured it was really time to upgrade. The spring refresh that people seem so down about looked pretty nice to me - nice to have the DDR3 memory at the system bus speed, bigger hard drive, etc...but then the rumors of a refresh started and now I am anxiously looking forward to the new line up. The spring refresh would have been a pretty big jump over my formerly trusty G5 and whatever they release will be better than that.

I can't be disappointed. It is all a matter of perspective.

Well I am hoping the slipping ship dates are a sign they are going to update their whole range with a bluray option.

Im not sure what to make of this. I think its maybe too early for new processors but i wont be getting a new mac while they still use core 2 duo.

But it's the same damn news coming out every day - give us something concrete instead. We know that access to the iMac and Mac Mini is really bad. We know that there will be an update soon. But give us a date or pictures of something - for all other events usually turn up pictures of the machine, but not this time.

There are only paying a Chinese person who can shoot from the factory, so we know what awaits us - what is it that is so difficult?

Now I have been without a Mac for nearly two-month, please Apple - I can not wait any longer. Do something.

I was hoping that something might come out today but nothing :(

I have setup google news alerts and its the same few stories being thrown about day after day...

On well here's to waiting some more :(

On What Planet

I just checked (10/1/09, 3:30 PM) Apple's online store regarding the Mac Mini. It clearly says it ships in 1 - 3 business DAYS, as it always has!

Maybe there was merely a temporary glitch in the supply stream.

Wow, so the SL install software doesn't detect to see if your computer is a PPC or not? Weird..

my guess (and this may have already been mentioned) is that these slipping ship dates are Apple's attempt to dissuade prospective Mac mini buyers from making their purchase in the immediate future... though why anyone would want to buy either one, considering how meager and unimpressive their spec lists are, is really beyond me.

I'd definitely welcome a redesign for the both the Mac mini and iMac (while very nice, the current designs have definitely run their course), but I'm not in the market for either, so at most I'd probably just stop by my local Apple Store to toy around with them at some point... who knows, though, if these "compelling new features" we keep hearing about are at least somewhat more impressive than the lackluster showing in the iMac's last spec bump, I may consider saving up for one after all.

I hope there are really new minis with USB 3.0

I hope you aren't counting on seeing it in the upcoming refresh, since USB 3 isn't expected to hit consumer-based computers until Q1 2010 (my guess is likely sometime in early Spring '10)... though believe me, I would not be complaining if Apple somehow managed to implement it into their product line in advance of that timeframe.

Erm - but the majority of their buyers aren't so clued up about their business as we on these forum sites are. If I were the average consumer wanting to buy a Mac Mini, I probably wouldn't have ever guessed a new one was in the works.

There's also the possibility that there'd be a retirement of the 2.26GHz 13" with the 2.53GHz taking it's place price-wise as the only 13" MBP, and a corresponding bumping down in prices for the 15" and 17". Or something along those lines, anyway.
To be honest, I'm just wanting something to happen, news-wise, because I'll be getting my very first Mac(Awww! Bless) in a week, but if there's all these rumours and nonsense, I'll be putting it off until later. And I want one now. Boo.

No. USB 3.0 is expected to appear in the later part of 2009. As a matter of fact, an external drive was just announced.

The appeal of the mac mini is for me first and foremost having it serve as a great media center/HTPC. It's also really small and quiet, which is optimal when you have very limited room. :)

I think the Mac mini should get a little big bigger though, to allow for a 3,5" 2 TB HDD BTO option, also featuring HDMI out on it like the Apple TV, since it would simplify connecting it to modern TV. Also, a lot of new displays come with HDMI ports (though most those have DVI ports as well)

I don't see Blu-ray nor Quad-Core (Intel Clarksfield) happening any time soon due to cost and heat issues (the latter for more compact and/or portable devices), also it consumes way too much power for portabels - atleast for apples products.

Huh? Where did you get that from his post?
I'll show you:
When I found out that Leopard was the end of the OS line for my iMac G5 I went ahead and upgraded - to my regret. I had to restart an unusual number of times during the upgrade. Then it would not let me in at all for awhile.

What I got from that is he had an iMac G5 and upgraded to SL anyway when he says
When I found out that Leopard was the end of the OS line for my iMac G5 I went ahead and upgraded - to my regret.
When he said I went ahead and upgraded I assumed he meant the OS.

Later on he lists the problems it caused, and I assume some of these problems are from installing SL on a PPC.

Since he installed SL on a PPC (from my inference of his post, anyway) I was surprised Apple doesn't have a detection when installing SL to see if it's a PPC or not. Because some people who don't know much about computers might not know what computer is PPC and what is intel.
