To be honest, I'm just wanting something to happen, news-wise, because I'll be getting my very first Mac(Awww! Bless) in a week, but if there's all these rumours and nonsense, I'll be putting it off until later. And I want one now. Boo.

Exact same here. I plan on buying a MacBook Pro soon, my first Mac as well, and as someone who has followed the Apple rumour scene for years and years, I'm quite wary of buying one at the moment.

I need a laptop. Bad. So, I hate the waiting game.

Forget the iMacs for the time being... If apple outs a redesigned Macbook, it would only make sense that there would be, at the very least, a spec bump to the MacBook Pros. If they really want to differentiate the two laptop lines, they should make the i7 standard in all MBPs. The disparity in between the two lines would be easily explainable: aluminum and 4 cores. Simple, and very Apple. If they release i7s MBPs at their current prices, they will have hit a homerun. If they offer Blueray and/or USB 3.0, a grand slam. (though USB 3.0 seems a bit premature at this point)

Maybe a price drop?

I would say that any big differences would happen next year. I can see a small spec bump for now, just to keep the differences, with the big reveal in February or whenever the usual date is for MBP-type stuff.

i disagree.

I agree with your disagreement.

Lets not all forget that 2009 was Apples LAST year at macworld. Macworld happens right after christmas when everyone is peeved that their new Apple device they got under the tree is now "out dated"...

It makes alot of sense for us to see a much more substantial update before the holiday season and around the same time that windows 7 is launched. It does two things for Apple.
1) takes the attention away from Windows 7
2) provides a tonne of new goodies for people to think about buying for the holiday season. Those who would usually wait for Macworld are ready to buy.

The MBP-type stuff has generally been around October. Oct '08 was when the new unibodies were introduced. What threw a wrench in the typical flow is the updates they released in June (internal battery, SD card, etc..). So I'm not quite sure WHAT they will do. But if they DO release a new Macbook (which is LONG overdue), they will have to address the MBPs in one way or another. Otherwise the specs will be too similar. At the very least, they should make discrete graphics standard across all MBPs, but some i7 action would be real nice.

Can you imagine though if Apple did everything being suggested? It would be quite humorous to see a quad core iMac with Blu-Ray, super sound system and matte display. Peoples heads would explode! :D

You think so? I personally believe that they'd complain that the price was nto lower ... and that it didn't cook them breakfast. ;)

Well, windows 7 comes out 10/22. If the refresh is coming (note that these three items would contain the "low end" of Apple's computing power ie. no Macbook Pro or Mac Pro) it will be with some nicely dropped prices on low end models to try and take a bite out of Windows. Spec bumps all around as well ....

I would assume they would want at least a week jump on Microsoft so an announcement (assuming there is one) a week before the release scheduled for 13th would be ... next week? The 6th?

There! I have predicted the future by virtue of my Miracle M:apple:th :p

You're probably right. If the $1999 top spec iMac had Clarksfield, Blu-Ray, LED backlit display, etc, there would be plenty crying about how you can get a comparably specced Dell for $300 less.

Erm - but the majority of their buyers aren't so clued up about their business as we on these forum sites are. If I were the average consumer wanting to buy a Mac Mini, I probably wouldn't have ever guessed a new one was in the works.

point taken- though while I can understand that most consumers don't have the first idea about Apple's product refresh cycle, I think it still bears mentioning that the average consumer would not have the patience to wait several weeks for a product to arrive by mail (i.e. the slipping ship dates)- regardless of whether they were aware that an imminent product line refresh was the reason behind the delay... immediate gratification seems to have become an increasingly prevalent part of the typical American's modus operandi, hence the reasoning behind my comment.

No. USB 3.0 is expected to appear in the later part of 2009. As a matter of fact, an external drive was just announced.

well, that's certainly good to hear, but without the proper controllers/hardware, you won't be able to use it... in any case, I could just be going off outdated information, but as I said in my post earlier, I certainly wouldn't be complaining if Apple brought USB 3 to their product line either in this next refresh or at least prior to Q1 2010.

That sounds like a Mac Pro killer short of the expansion part. I like it.

pre-release signs

I am getting a new Imac, when the new ones (hopefully) are released. I did the exact same waiting game last year when the new macbooks came out in October.

Is there any definite pattern prior to a release- inventory shortage, new skus appearing? is there something that always appears prior to new release?

on a side note, is there any other product out there that has such obsessive fans, myself included?? It better come out soon- I have to stop reading 20 mac forums a day, in search of any small nugget of new viable information.:)

I bet someone could make a fortune standing on a corner selling Mac Info Leaks to the Mac junkies. Imagine selling tiny bags of MacRumorLeaks to the masses. :D

This is not a normal pattern. I don't know when the last time Apple sent out a warning to retailers about stock levels happened. Maybe it's just their new policy to avoid too many surprises.

The thing that has some people concerned is the lack of any kind of press event surrounding these refreshes.

If the refresh was really major (included quad core, blu-ray, etc) it seems likely that Apple would try to milk it for all it was worth through a press junket.

I'll show you:

What I got from that is he had an iMac G5 and upgraded to SL anyway when he says

He said Leopard. You quoted twice that he said Leopard. Leopard is the last release for PPC. Snow Leopard is a new release that is not Leopard.

I hope that clears it up for you now.

I think this is going to be more substantial than a simple speed bump. But I don't think it's going to be enough of an advance to warrant a media event.

I'm guessing/hoping next Tuesday we'll be seeing a press release about updated iMacs, Minis, and MacBooks.

All I need in the iMacs is quad core to fill that gap in between iMac and MacPro towers.

I don't think that's an unreasonable expectation.

It's not unreasonable, but Steve Job hates you so it isn't going to happen! :D

Reading the collection of threads regarding this anticipated update many posters have a long wish list including Blu-ray, Quad Core processor, LED screen, better GFX card etc. etc. whilst also wanting a price cut? Personally I'll pay a premium price for a premium piece of kit. I've had the money for the last year for a new iMac but have held off on my purchase as my perception is that the current crop of iMacs are a bit overpriced for what they are. If Apple give us a worthy update I'll gladly pay the premium they charge for their computers.
