From the wording on Apple's retail pages it looks like you will be able to reserve the iPhone 6 online and pick it up in store.

I've never reserved an iPhone at a launch before, does anybody have experience with how it works? Do you pay for it online beforehand? Do you still have to line up early or are you guaranteed to get an iPhone if you reserve one?

I think that means just show up sometime that day and they'll hold a phone for you to pick up. This is great news for me as I won't be able to sign for the package when it would come, even though I'll have to drive an hour to my Apple Store.

I did the in-store pickup for the 5S last year because silver was very difficult to find. I did the check out online, paid online. Went to the store the next day and just had to set it up. Mind you, this wasn't a preorder but I'm sure it will work the same.

Note: According to the Apple Store app, phones ordered for AT&T Next are not eligible for in-store pickup.

I don't see this on Apple's website. It doesn't mention anything about reserving. I know when the iPhone 4 was released, you could reserve one, but the lines were long and the whole process of verifying eligibility took forever.

[UPDATE] this is from the Apple Retail store (whatever that means),but I noticed there are no carrier prices, only full price.

For the iPhone 4, you could reserve, which meant you waited in line to pay for one. You got to go ahead of all the suckers who slept out all night (me, being one of them), but you still had to wait in line. I think that with the 6 you pay for it online and pickup in store. You did notice that the prices on the retail page are full price, with no carrier subsidy, right?

No way I'm ordering for in-store pickup. You'll wait in a huuuuuuge line. No thanks. It can come to my door sometime Friday.

Yes, I'm planning on buying unlocked in order to keep my current plan which is no longer offered by my carrier.

Personally if I am guaranteed to get one doing the in store pick up, I would rather wait in a line at the Apple store than wait by the door all day for UPS/FedEx.

This is pretty good news.

Side note: in the keynote, they mentioned phones would ship friday. So I don't think people will be getting their phones day of launch, if opting to ship to your house.

Anyway, I could have waited to ship, but I would rather cross the boarder into NH and save the tax. A 64GB 6 Plus should save me about $65 if I opt to pick up instead of have it delivered.

Me too!

Plus if you go to the store you don't have to worry about a delivery driver accidentally delivering your phone to the wrong address because one of the numbers on the label print-out was smudged, or even worse... him stealing the phone and saying it was delivered (really easy to do as long as he hasn't done he doesn't have a history of it).

I preorder my 5s and picked it up in store on launch day and bypassed the main line. There was a preorder line pickup that allowed me to be in and out in 15 mins. I'm going to do this again for the 6.

Your line is not my line. Come to Seattle and try that, lol! I waited just under 2 hours in the store-pickup line for my 5S in Bellevue, WA.

Guys, does anyone know if the stores hold the phones for you for a week or two?

I'm going to pre order for in-store pickup and then fly no NPC and get the phone, but I don't know if the stores will hold it for 10 days for me.

They are shipped so they arrive on Friday.

In the past, ordering on day one guaranteed your phone would be delivered on launch day. I don't think this will change. As long as you get in the first wave of orders, you should receive your phone in the 19th. I know he said "will begin shipping" but I think that's what they've said in the past.

Not sure they'll have in store pickup.

Not sure they'll have in store pickup.

Last year orders were at midnight on actual launch day. I realize they have done this in the past, I was just pointing out what was actually said in the keynote.

As far as lack of store pickup, the website makes it fairly clear, but they obviously can reserve the right to backtrack on that.

We don't know that... because they didn't say that. That isn't what happened last year.

In kinda of the same boat. What I want to actually do is pre-order at the local store on 9/12 for pickup on 9/22 since I will be out of town the weekend of the 19th.

Interesting - here's the how to order page on Apple.com

One thing I noticed from the 5 launch, was that if you ordered for pickup you had zero headaches ( I think there's was one person who complained).

Delivery headaches abounded.

do a search if you are interested.

For the launch of the 5S I went to my local AT&T store, there was a line of about 5 people from about 4am but a whole lot better than waiting outside an Apple Store.
