As some have predicted those iphone 15pro only AAA didn’t do well:

It's early days. Give the iPhone 2-3 more generations and it will match a Series S and make it more viable for AAA games.

Currently AAA games on iphones are in no man's land:
-They are not casual like 99% of games played on phones.
-Those who resident evil or AC already have consoles or PC to play them at higher quality.

Further reflection:
We are needs but the average iphone owner won't know they triple a titles are avaible on the latest iphones. It's a very new thing.

IMO the user base is too small (iPhone 15 pro only) and it will not get better in a few years cause 8GB will not be enough for future AAA games.

This is the main problem for me. I already own a Xbox Series X, a PS5 and a Switch. Why would i double dip on iOS? I did bug Death Stranding as i love that game, and performance wasn’t great, i just ended uo starting a new game on my PS5, with ocasional play on my iPhone through the PS Remote app and a backbone, which as long as you have solid connection provides a much netter experience than the native game.

I think that’s the big problem AAA games on iOS will face those interested have them already. Those who like casual games won’t spend on it.

Today 60% of gaming takes place on mobile devices. This will only grow as console sales continue to dwindle. If in 2-3 years iPhones match Series S and titles like Valorant and Fortnite are on the device, there will be a smaller incentive to buy a console. I am considering a Steam Deck, Switch 2 or ROG ally.

RE2 and AC Mirage are AAA titles but not blockbuster titles that are representative of the potential of console games on the iPhone.

The issues for gaming publishers on mobile phones is that people expect freemium games. If your game is free, you could end up in the top 10 list of downloaded games which is great for marketing. If you are not in the top 10 list you will have to spend a fortune on advertising. For some games, marketing spend is 25-40% of revenue. Mad!

Unsurprising. I downloaded Resident Evil Village, but the controls are horrible. It's not suitable for mobile usage.
This doesn't bother tens of millions who play COD, Minecraft and Roblox using on-screen controls. My kids and their friends do it and don't seem to be bothered enough to ask for a bluetooth xbox controller like I use with my xbox.

Considering the iPhone still struggles to consistently match a PS4, I'm not at all convinced it could meet a Series S anytime soon.

I don't disagree, btw, that there's more opportunity for console-like games on mobiles, I just don't think mobiles will be coming for the £60 AAA market that many people still want to play on their TV.

Apple just isn't going to give the iPhone the memory, storage or cooling capacity that it would need for that.

While that is true, I just also don't see myself spending the kind of money console games cost on a game that only runs on my phone.

I don't know about Minecraft or Roblox, but COD is a distinct version designed explicitly for mobiles. Almost every review of existing console games on iOS point out what a miserable and poor experience it is with on-screen controls.

I'm just not convinced there's a good way to adapt a game that's designed to be played with 2 analog sticks and 8 physical buttons to touchscreen controls.

I still think console/PC gaming and mobile gaming are two separate things for a reason. I agree that we'll see more sophisticated games on mobiles with all the performance improvements and a recent iPhone could probably replace the Switch for many games that run on it.

But even if the iPhone catches up to the Series S in 2-3 years, at which point it will be 6-7 years old, that means that we'll be almost at the end of the console generation and the chase starts over.

For mobiles to replace consoles I think we'd have to see a massive market shift in the type of games people play on consoles, rather than playing console games on your phone. Consoles will by their very nature have a power advantage unless they completely stagnate.

That's a fair point. Unlike us, I suppose they're not conditioned to controller usage, and tolerate it. Meanwhile, their parents are unlikely to tolerate paying £30-40 for these AAA games.

I went back and tried to play REV on iPhone 15 PM. It's such a lazy half arsed port, and it's genuinely unplayable. There's no way Minecraft/COD/Roblox can have controls this bad! No way at all. It's a catastrophe of a "game".
