Today 60% of gaming takes place on mobile devices. This will only grow as console sales continue to dwindle. If in 2-3 years iPhones match Series S and titles like Valorant and Fortnite are on the device, there will be a smaller incentive to buy a console. I am considering a Steam Deck, Switch 2 or ROG ally.
Considering the iPhone still struggles to consistently match a PS4, I'm not at all convinced it could meet a Series S anytime soon.
I don't disagree, btw, that there's more opportunity for console-like games on mobiles, I just don't think mobiles will be coming for the £60 AAA market that many people still want to play on their TV.
Apple just isn't going to give the iPhone the memory, storage or cooling capacity that it would need for that.
The issues for gaming publishers on mobile phones is that people expect freemium games.
While that is true, I just also don't see myself spending the kind of money console games cost on a game that only runs on my phone.
This doesn't bother tens of millions who play COD, Minecraft and Roblox using on-screen controls. My kids and their friends do it and don't seem to be bothered enough to ask for a bluetooth xbox controller like I use with my xbox.
I don't know about Minecraft or Roblox, but COD is a distinct version designed explicitly for mobiles. Almost every review of existing console games on iOS point out what a miserable and poor experience it is with on-screen controls.
I'm just not convinced there's a good way to adapt a game that's designed to be played with 2 analog sticks and 8 physical buttons to touchscreen controls.
I still think console/PC gaming and mobile gaming are two separate things for a reason. I agree that we'll see more sophisticated games on mobiles with all the performance improvements and a recent iPhone could probably replace the Switch for many games that run on it.
But even if the iPhone catches up to the Series S in 2-3 years, at which point it will be 6-7 years old, that means that we'll be almost at the end of the console generation and the chase starts over.
For mobiles to replace consoles I think we'd have to see a massive market shift in the type of games people play on consoles, rather than playing console games on your phone. Consoles will by their very nature have a power advantage unless they completely stagnate.
