i hope they will refresh the smart cover for the air too. The current one isn't the most stable in "viewing" mode..

I miss the days when their releases were more spread out. iPad in March, iPhone in summer/fall. New Macs popping up throughout the year. Now it seems like everything is squished into the holiday period.

I miss when these events held more surprises, rather than verifications of "leaks".

Not sure what you're complaining about. If the reports are true, so far we'll have seen:
  • Larger iPhone
  • iPhone 6 Plus with higher PPI display
  • Watch
  • Touch ID, Multitasking and 2GB RAM on the iPad Air
  • Touch ID on the iPad mini
  • Apple Pay
  • Hi-res iMac

Some of these are catch-up (e.g. larger iPhone), but they are pretty solid improvements, along with a brand new category.

The only 'new' things on your list is the watch and ApplePay.
The rest are improvements on existing products...which seem to be the agenda for Thursday's announcement.

I realize things don't happen overnight and Apple likes to make sure they get things right (although you wouldn't know it from the iOS 8 rollout).

Just a bit too much hyperbole on Cue's part.

Apple may evaluate the Mini one more year before ditching it in near future...1-2 years from now...probably.
My guess is, more than 70% of all iPad sales are Minis. So if there is an iPad to be ditched, its the big iPad with Retina Display (non-Air). Who's buying that?

3X resolution? Yeah, keep dreaming on the mid-term upgrade. iPad Air was redesigned last year and Air 2 is just minor refresh. Why would Apple need increase resolution while the Retina HD will be good enough with the same resolution? Also, it'd be stupid for apps rescaling just due to the mid-term upgrade (1-2, Retina 3-4, New design Air - Air 2)
I would bet the resolution will stay the same at least until there's new redesign which dues next year.

I'm not dreaming, I'm just making an educated guess based on the A8X chip being used. I don't really care either way. Apple usually does things for a reason. Putting an A8X in the iPad Air for the hell of it doesn't make sense. It likely has a PowerVR Series6XT GX6650, which is the hex-core variant of the GX6450 quad-core found in the A8 chip. Apple doesn't often upgrade internal-facing hardware without an external-facing marketing reason: Retina HD Display. That's the new buzzword. If any device could benefit from Retina HD, it would be the iPad Air since it has the lowest PPI of any currently shipping iOS device. Again, I'm not saying that the current screen is bad. From a typical viewing distance many people probably won't notice. But they did it with the iPhone 6 Plus and nobody expected that. I think the reason they did scaling was because they're eventually going to give it a true @3X display. Another marketing bullet point.

Awesome news. I'm looking forward to matching silicone smart covers and smart cases from Apple.

Wow, Eddy Cue wasn't joking when he said,
'Later this year, we’ve got the best product pipeline that I’ve seen at Apple in my 25 years at Apple."
(sarcasm).

Sure, yearly speed bumps are fine, but when you make a statement like this, and I expect more. I would love to be wrong.

Oh come on! Cue's statement should be taken as a purely marketing statement.
That's all. No reading between the lines.

Same here, as far as product pipeline, they should NOT count existing products being upgraded/updated or spec bumps. Even when they have new features or form factors.

Maybe he can define "pipeline"?

To me that is new products. So, apple pay and the watch qualify, a new 5K display qualifies borderline, so does the MacPro as it was a total overhaul.

It's just be the Air 2, sure it's a tock year for iPad, tick for iPhone. Keeps it interesting, in theory.

iPad
iPad 2

iPad Retina
iPad Retina 2, basically

iPad Air,
iPad Air 2

Please make the smart cover magnet stronger, I've owned a few that was too weak and the fold stand wasn't very usable either.

Is this a joke? The iPad Mini is the best thing they make. And yes I've had a full size iPad and I have an iPhone 6.

I won't buy another full size iPad and I don't think I'm the only one.

New Air, Mini and iMac. No Mac mini.

Release dates for OS X Yosemite and iOS 8.1.

That's all we'll see.

Yes but will the new iPad mini have the same gamma range of the iPad Air, or the crippled gamut range of the current retina mini.

I guess it depends if iPhone 6+ ends up really eroding mini sales. I think a mini with Touch ID and NFC will really take off as point if sale terminals for small businesses and the mini market has a lot of buyers outside the ones that are getting 6+. I agree. The mini market is going to continue to thrive.

Whether or not they are improvements on existing products, they are still significant. Apple was leaving a lot of money on the table by not having a large phone. So I can see why Eddy Cue would be excited about having one to sell.

"modest upgrades" seems to be a recurring theme of anything coming from Apple these days. iOS 8 to iPhone 6 to iPads lately are the same thing just with "modest upgrades".

To me a pipeline/lineup like this would be quite clear and logical -

- iPad Mini Retina 2 A8 1GB (7.9 inch) 4:3 Aspect, Touch ID, Apple Pay
- iPad Air 2014 A8X 2GB (9.7 inch) 4:3 Aspect, Touch ID, Apple Pay
- iPad Pro Early 2015 A8X 2GB (11.9 inch) (Retina HD) 16:10 aspect, Touch ID, Apple Pay

As for design, well it will come, reduced top and bottom bezels, although I think when that day comes we'll be seeing the introduction of foldable screens.

Why the hell is the sixth generation iPad referred to as "the retina iPad air 2" ???

The sixth generation iPad is referred to as iPad Air 2 because this name clearly means a newer generation iPad Air. "Retina iPad mini 2" is more like the second generation iPad mini. :D

I'm looking to get a new iPad Mini this year and even if it only comes with Touch ID, I'll be happy. Though I am disappointed to hear a rumor that they will still have a 16GB option. I think that is too small these days. 32GB should be the minimum in my opinion.

I'm not sure what you're talking about... maybe joking? There was an original non-retina iPad Mini (first generation) and last year's iPad Mini Retina (2nd generation mini or first generation iPad Mini with Retina). So this one will be the third generation iPad Mini AND second generation iPad Mini with Retina.

Unless you're joking, your post reads like you missed that iPad Mini generation when it went retina OR you forgot about the first generation that wasn't retina.
