No one forced you to keep an expensive device with a defective or unsatisfactory screen. How's that for a contribution?

As a contribution, it's lacking.

Me keeping an unsatisfactory screen and Apple using them are two issues. Sure, I could have fought with Apple to yet again replace a replacement screen. But I doubt that would have done any good, and why go through the bother?

I'm not complaining about my screen, I'm saying that the quality of the screens they use is suspect from my experience with both computers and iDevices.

But by my count, at least two posts you have wasted in this thread dealing with my comments.

Interesting confirmation of what I noticed last Saturday.

My preference was Mini since it launched save for the horrible resolution compared to the iPhone and iPad.

I then won a Mini 2 months ago and got used to it, but knowing I would sell it before the ReMini came out.

I wasn't impressed with the iAir when it came out, but holding it AFTER looking at the ReMini caused me to conclude that the gamut was obviously lacking on the former, and the weight improvement was more glaring with the added heft of the ReMini.

Winner of this year - iAir.

probably a stupid question

First, I've had my iPad mini for about a year now; and, although I am definitely a little bothered by the pixelated text, I never once noticed the inferior color gamut. Looks like the tests show the new rMini I ordered has better gamut scores, so I am certain to not notice. And I guarantee you, if I can't really tell when looking at it, I won't be taking it into a store to compare it with an iPad Air. That would be just stupid. Oh, and I had some ghosting on the image retention test that I still can't see in regular use. Looks like I've blinded myself to the shortcomings of this terrible display. /S

On to my question. If the rMini has the same type of display (IZGO) from the same manufacturers and essentially the same CPU/GPU, then could this be a software fix if Apple decided to change their minds on the gamut, or is that still a physical property of the display itself? Please, don't insult me for my ignorance.

This is such a joke. The original mini sold extremely well and it LACKED RETINA compared to the larger model.

When will the trolls on this board realize that people do not choose the mini for performance or screen reasons. They choose it for portability.

I picked up my rMini at the Apple Store yesterday, and the place was PACKED. I haven't had too much time to play with it, but love the device so far. I didn't notice anyone walking out of the store complaining about gamuts and not buying anything...

Correlation doesn't equal causation. Just because the Mini sold a ton doesn't mean that no one cares about Retina, it just means that people through the pros outweighed the cons. There's no such thing as a device so good, it couldn't possibly be made any better.

Plus, these arguments always fly in the face of everyone who claims Apple's greatest strength is the quality and care that goes into all their products.

So which is it? Does Apple sell a lot of Minis because people enjoy the strengths of the brand, or because people simply like the size and could care less about anything else?

Girlfriend called me out yesterday after I returned both the rMini's I bought that had uneven, yellow on bottom 1/4 of screens: "wow, you've never returned or exchanged an Apple product." We start counting all the products and realized in my lifetime I'm at least in the 20+ range of lifetime Apple purchases.

Wow, I thought. Maybe just a bad batch that came to my Apple store. Ordered online, will give them one more chance. I refuse to waste my time trying more than twice to get a good unit. Hearing some people on here try as much as 4, 5 times to get a good one is crazy I think. If the next rMini's still have uneven screens I'm going back to the original non-retina Mini for a year hoping next year they're better.

It's not just the colour gamut that's bad, it's the yellow, uneven temperature of the screen. Lots of people with the problem: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1672779/

Should be even but a lot are not. It's subtle to spot but once you know what to look for it's really annoying and you notice it all the time.

This.

They looked awesome when I went and saw them in stores, hence why I ordered one.

Did you hold the iPad Air and rMini side by side? If you did you most likely would have noticed how flat the colours are in the rMini. Pay attention to the following icons and you'll really notice it: iMessage, iTunes, App Store, and Music.

As far as the yellow tint that a lot of people are complaining about, you'll have a hard time noticing it in store with all that store lighting above every demo station. Take it home and see for yourself in natural lighting, easier to spot then. Or maybe don't look for it ;) once you do it might just really annoy you.

It's a "retina" device with the same washed out colors as the iPad 2.
This is the first "retina" device that does not use the full color gamut.
It only uses just under 70% or maybe a bit lower I think it was.

iPad 3, iPad 4, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C,
All had "retina" displays with full color and brightness along with pixel density. This was the distinct difference compared to non retina devices.

This is the first retina product Apple has released that only applies to pixels.
To me, I notice the washed colors every time I use the device.
Like last years model, the new retina iPad mini is a bit disappointing.

The unwashed masses do not buy Apple products. They're only for us high brow rich snobby types. Hence why they only sell in the tens of millions, and we're always on here bragging about iDevices being the single highest selling products in their particular markets. Cuz, you know, poor people olol android.
Affordable Luxury. Like when american tourists wonder why all the cabs in Berlin are from Mercedes? It's not normal to them. Everything Apple makes is an upperclass product: $1000+ laptops, $600+ smartphones, $400+ tablets. You can't deny that everything Apple sells is as much an luxury product as it is an mass-market product. Those two are not mutually exclusive. Where I live the garbage truck is a Mercedes.

Putting my retina iPad mini next to my iPhone 5, I could hardly see any difference. I still admire the brilliance and quality of the screen each time I use it. Seems like a lot of this is being blown out of proportion by iPad air owners bashing the iPad mini in order to justify their purchase.
Or perhaps there are different screen manufacturers or the problem manifests itself more intensely on some iPads than others? Just because your iPad doesn't exhibit that severe a color difference doesn't mean everyones does. Some are showing image retention and others are not. Some have yellow tints and others do not. As much as I'm sure you enjoy projecting your experience on everyone else, I assure you, the experience is likely different from person to person.

Or you could just have crappy eyesight. :D

The rMBP 15" screen is low gamut too and that was the main reason I didn't like it much

There is a difference in color Gamut between the rMini and Air. No doubt about it. The question is how many people will actually care. It's like HDTV's. So many of them out there are calibrated poorly out of the box, even when they cost $5000. I have to bite my lip when friends get new tv's and say isn't that a really great picture, with great color? I want to say no, no it's not. But I don't because I don't want to ruin their experience. Sometimes ignorance is bliss, and to most people, ignorance is what they want.
The difference is you can actually adjust a TV's colors if they're not to your liking.

I am getting the rMini to replace my 3 year old Nook Tablet. It will be used primarily as a book reader, to check email, etc... I am looking forward to the sharper text.

First off, if that were true, we wouldn't have an entire thread about one of Apple's new products having a screen that's not quite as good as a competing product that costs half as much. Cost doesn't always equate to quality. Sometimes you can and do pay more for less. It's your job to be astute and aware enough to know when it's happening, not to defend a product when it falls below your standards because of the reputation of the brand.

Which leads to my second point. Spending more doesn't mean you have class, taste, or wealth. Some of the wealthiest people I know are utter cheapskates who'd argue with you over the cost of a dime. It's for this very reason they're rich. Now I'm not gonna say that Apple is for poseurs, but much like anything that has a reputation for quality, it does have that draw. Apple products are relatively inexpensive enough that those who want to look like they have wealth and taste without actually having it can easily afford it. A thousand dollar computer is a far, far cry from a $90,000+ car.

So don't go around saying Apple isn't for "normal people". They are. They're a pricier option than most, but not so outrageous ole Billy Trailer Park can't save up a couple of paychecks and buy one himself.

Don't confuse the amount you spend on something as being indicative of your refined taste and discernment.

guys, apple has become a company of "good enough" versus a company that's superior. just look at the comments in this thread. WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING IT'S GOOD ENOUGH!

Not really a tablet guy, but after handling an iPad Air in the store the other day, the first thing that came to mind was, "Why would anyone get a Mini?"

Don't the new form factor and weight of the Air make the Mini virtually redundant?

For a $100 more (and a negligible increase in size and weight), the Air would be a no-brainer for me if I was looking to get an iPad... But hey, to each their own.

I had to buy a Nexus 7 for class and I can say without a doubt that the display is useless. Once you squeeze the browser UI on that awfully narrow aspect ratio, it's not much bigger than the iPhone. Such a shame that I spent money on a tablet for debugging android apps, and I have no reason to keep it once the class is over

huh? the iPhone 5/5S and Nexus 7 both are 16:9. So if you use an iPhone you should be used to that same aspect ratio...

Welcome to gamutgate.

Obligatory remark: Apple is doomed!

/s

Let me guess, you're the type of person that brags when apple is superior and pretends the metric is meaningless when apple is inferior by way of sarcasm.
