Mine has a small blemish on the aluminum below the hinge. Granted, it doesn't really affect my usage at all (plus I already moved all of my data), so I'm probably not going to exchange it. Still, it bothers me.

It's tough. They put so much effort into these machines and the attention to detail and engineering is apparent throughout. Naturally it just feels wrong when something like that is blemished. You're lucky that it's out of sight at least.

amazingly i dont see any tinting issues or dead pixes.

i returned 9 ipad2s before i got one that i was satisfied with, also went through 4 iphone 3gs' back in the day so you can say i'm OCD.

Only thing that may make me return it is the choppy UI performance... but i've just taken delivery yesterday so i've got a good two weeks to decide.

have a small pinhole above my f6 key... i'm assuming this isnt a mic hole and is one of those pin hole deals everyones been talking about but seeing how many poeple have dead pixel issues etc i'm not changing this. exterior is flawless otherwise.

I just started another thread, in part because of this one, and in part because of the inherent crapshoot involved in exchanging products. My rMBP has dead pixels.

I have tentatively opted to have the screen replaced rather than having the entire machine replaced because that, at least in theory, limits the number of problems that I could experience when I get it back -- i.e., if I get an entirely new machine, it could be perfect, have the same problem, have different problems, or have some combination of problems.

I'm not sure if I made the right choice and still have time to change my mind so I figured I would post in this thread as well. Also, does exchanging the entire unit reset the 14 day return window, meaning that I am cutting short my return period by opting for repair instead of replacement?

I thought about doing that as well for the same reasons of course. Having experienced the luck of the draw first hand I can tell you it does appear to be a bit of a crapshoot at this point. After thinking about it I decided that if I get it repaired and it doesn't go well I could be in for a bigger hassle, and I'd no longer have the option to do a return.

The 14 day return window does reset, however, the Apple Care plan is back dated to the date you ordered the first computer.

wow this makes me very nervous. i finally got an advanced replacement arrived after weeks of emails back and fourth. mine has light leakage from the left side of screen. no other issues though. i hope i don't get something with worse issues!

I am trying to get confirmation from Apple that it will replace the screen even if the stuck pixels fall within Apple's acceptable range and that they will not use the acceptable range as an excuse if the replacement screen has dead or stuck pixels. If I cannot get confirmation, I will change to an exchange.

I guess so. I wish it were perfect, but I don't think I could wait any longer for a replacement or risk getting an even worse rMBP.

I went through 3 rMBP's before deciding to just get a cMBP. Granted, one of the machines I got was nearly perfect, but there were some unsightly imperfections in the aluminum on the palm rest and the top of the case.

The third one was perfect cosmetically, but it creaked terribly and I just didn't feel right keeping a creaky $2200 device. So, I exchanged for the base 15" cMBP. The screen is definitely worse, but not that much (to my eyes at least), and with the extra money I saved, I was able to put in 16gb of ram and a 256gb SSD. So, besides the screen and form factor, this cheaper cMBP is rocking socks, and tbh, general performance feels more solid than it did on the rMBP.

I'm happy.

Understandable. rMBP was definitely rushed to market and shouldn't have even seen the light of day before Mountain Lion's release.

I hope Tim isn't starting a trend of forgoing quality and superior experience in favor of hitting revenue projections...
I don't think you know what "rushed to market" really means.

MBPR is polished with some rough edges.

Fusion Garage Grid 10 is rushed to market.

btw - Grid 10 was universally panned and the company went dark.

I wasn't going to return mine because of the tiny nick in the aluminum, but my geek bench results are consistently well below what they should be (hovering around 4000 instead of over 10,000). I've gone so far as to erase the drive and install lion with only the OS updates.

This one hit 11932 on Geekbench, so the only problem here is the screen, too bad. Only takes about 2 minutes to produce burn-in on this one.

Sounds like we need a rMBP defect thread. I'd like a list of known issues to look out for within my warranty period...

Got mine today 4 days early!

Setting it up next to my 13 MBP 2011 a white screen is definitely a bit discolored by comparison. Not sure if its yellow or pink but its there.

Ill probably live with it, no ghosting yet, flawless body.

Of course I didnt take a magnifying glass to it either.

I have that exact blemish.. I kept mine too.

I've returned one and now is waiting for the new rmbp. It had laggy issue while browsing the web even in the lowest resolution. Apple makes me mad and i decided not to buy anymore apple product ever since.

I have a little nick on the top of it near the edge where you open it, it's nothing big.. I'll keep mine but I haven't used it much. So far i've had a stuck pixel on my 1st gen iPod touch, a nick like on my rMBP on my iPad and a crooked iPhone 4S volume thing.

Another OCD checking in.

Mine was perfect and I loved the screen, but I had so many conflicting thoughts going through my head.

Basically I was agonising as to whether I should have got a worse Windows laptop for less money because of my extensive usage of MS Office and frequent interaction with windows specific apps and windows servers.

On my birthday, I finally forced myself to make a decision on a return (the clock was ticking on 14 days...). My mother was over and said she'd pack it up for me. Basically she wasn't at all careful and allowed the rMBP to be forced against the electrical plug, which caused a small visible scratch on the bottom of the rMBP.

It's purely cosmetic. You can't even feel it and it actually looks more like a stain, but it is BUGGING THE HELL OUT OF ME just knowing it's there. I have a 2008 unibody macbook pro that is still in mint condition. I am also OCD'ing about the fact it was packed up causing "internal damage I can't see". Seriously, OCD is a bitch.

I also wanted to reformat quickly to erase my data before I returned, so went to disk utility and stupidly just erased Mac HD. Because I didn't do it properly I had to do an "internet restore".

I agonised the whole day and changed my mind about 30 mins before the delivery driver arrived.

Now I'm OCD'ing like hell again. I basically have a perfect rMBP, but the fact there is a minor not even skin deep scratch on the bottom and the fact that I cocked up a reformat makes me feel this model is now "tainted".

I'm still within my return period. I'm seriously considering returning this and waiting two weeks before buying an identical model again.

OCD can be a really bitch :(

Ever since... you bought a retina?

Like a month ago?

People use the term OCD too much, you don't have it.

Hey, I really feel for you. I know exactly what you are talking about. OCD really can be quite frustrating :( I think it might be better to return and wait, than to possibly regret. However, I think the less you take care of your stuff, the less the little scratch here and there will matter.

Wow that's a lot of exchanges but it's good to know that there is at least at 2/3 chance that my processing rMBP will be perfect. :)

Probably higher, considering that you probably have a higher-than-average number of people with problems coming to this board. And you also have a higher-than-average number of those people who do have problems probably responding to this poll (classic response bias).

To the probable sheer astonishment of the viewers of this thread, I'd put the number of defective MBPRs at an estimated 8-10%. But that's just my gut feeling.

Man and I thought I was particular about things....when you buy something like a laptop that has like 5 visible parts that are large and lots of keyboard keys, I just figure there's going to be something not 100% perfect. Not that it affects usability, but a small mark or dent or something of that nature. I just got my 16GB Retina yesterday and the only thing I noticed when inspecting it was a small mark on the bottom. Tiny, really. It doesn't bother me at all because it's tiny and it'll never cause a problem. I know people want their things to look pretty but I don't think tiny, tiny imperfections prevent things from still being stunning.
