An urgent question here. Hope someone can solve my concern.:confused:

Would Apple give you a refurbished product while u are requesting your exchange enquiry? It is because some say this is the solution for apple dealing with the large amount of defect macbook pros other than just selling the refurbished products

Probably higher, considering that you probably have a higher-than-average number of people with problems coming to this board. And you also have a higher-than-average number of those people who do have problems probably responding to this poll (classic response bias).

To the probable sheer astonishment of the viewers of this thread, I'd put the number of defective MBPRs at an estimated 8-10%. But that's just my gut feeling.

Good point I hadn't thought of that, well that's even better news :)

I have a little nick on the top of it near the edge where you open it, it's nothing big.. I'll keep mine but I haven't used it much. So far i've had a stuck pixel on my 1st gen iPod touch, a nick like on my rMBP on my iPad and a crooked iPhone 4S volume thing.

You sure have bad luck when buying Apple stuff...

People use the term OCD too much, you don't have it.

True. I have Aspergers with Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD), so I know exactly what it means to "have OCD".

I have "OCD" to the point I have to lock my door three times, brush my teeth twice in the morning, have to clean the bathroom every single time I use it...

However, as far as my MacBook Pro goes, I just plasti dip it with the clear plastidip to ensure it is clean. Heck, I won't even take out my rMBP without first having the stuff to protect it with.

This right here is what real OCD is.

----------

Man and I thought I was particular about things....when you buy something like a laptop that has like 5 visible parts that are large and lots of keyboard keys, I just figure there's going to be something not 100% perfect. Not that it affects usability, but a small mark or dent or something of that nature. I just got my 16GB Retina yesterday and the only thing I noticed when inspecting it was a small mark on the bottom. Tiny, really. It doesn't bother me at all because it's tiny and it'll never cause a problem. I know people want their things to look pretty but I don't think tiny, tiny imperfections prevent things from still being stunning.

This.

that tiny nick posted by 628 is ugly

I have no OCD but that nick is ugly, size doesn't matter. I'd rather have a soft dent that won't be as obvious.
Awaiting mine (next week), but anxious after these stories.

Can someone post a checklist what and HOW to check their new rMBP (ghosting, yellow tints etc.)
That and the performance lag issue stand between me and a possible return.

I probably keep it if these bugs come within limits, but dang, Apple could have given these early products a discount given that there are so many complaints.., plus they are sitting on $300 billion anyway. Give something back to your early adopters..

Received my replacement today and the keyboard's backlight does not work accompanied by a hissing sound when the machine is on.

Went to the apple store immediately after I found it out and I have another replacement coming UGH. The guy on the phone said I would have it by tomorrow or the day after which is awesome... they felt bad.

But seriously apple? This machine is starting looking like a lemon and I've never had problems like this with an apple machine before...

just planning to exchange it because the macbook has creaky sound and not solid assembled

I'm also very OCD, so I was desperately hoping my rMBP wouldn't yield any issues that would tempt me to send it back. (I sent my 2006 black MacBook back three times for scratches, creaking, etc. before finally returning it and getting a MBP.)

After giving my rMBP an "inspection" though, I have to say that my rMBP is probably as close to perfect as you can get. I see no display issues whatsoever (which is a miracle), and the build seems excellent (absolutely no creaking when I pick it up). The aluminum casing is utterly flawless except for a small nick on the bottom rear "exhaust vent" (I'm not sure what it's actually called, so someone feel free to correct me). It's so small and out of sight, though, I really couldn't care less.

The only other thing is a mark or two on the black Wifi strip at the bottom rear of the display. It almost looks like some glue came into contact with it, leaving a slight residue.

Overall, however, I realize--as others have said--that no computer is going to be 100% perfect. Considering my rMBP is pretty darn close to perfect, I'm extremely, extremely satisfied!

Some may confuse your attitude as pragmatism, however I see it as weakness. I'm not in the habit of making excuses for other people's failures.

If it's any consolation, my BTO is perfect (and this is after I had to return my iPad 1 four times and my iPad 2 once, deciding finally to accept a refund for my iPad 1).

When I exchanged mine, I got a new one right then and there.

------

I'm on my second one, might move to a third. Dunno yet, I'm weighing my options.

First one:

  1. Hingle squeaking in bottom centre
  2. Metallic clang when gently pushing on bottom left speaker
  3. Palm rest fading (to a noticeable degree) after a week
  4. Plus a few very small design inconsistencies, but those I was fine with

Second one: (currently using)
  1. Hingle squeaking in bottom centre
  2. Metallic clang when gently pushing on bottom left speaker
  3. Palm rest fading (to a noticeable degree) after a week
  4. Squeaky enter key (slightly better now that time has passed, but....)
  5. Slight hissing here and there (quiet usually, but odd)

So I dunno. Should I bother?

I finally got a perfect rMBP, took four tries but this one doesn't have any cosmetic flaws or screen issues, no image retention. The screen does seem *slightly* sharper than the previous one that had image retention. Must be a different MFG.

This was an issue with my 2 MBR along with creaky back plate.

Apple quality control really needs to be re-evaluated.

i'm waiting for my third replacement.

1st one - had a dent on the bottom

2nd one - creaking noises on the bottom half and the plastic part of the hinge is loose.

I think I will be returning mine as although it is a fine computer and knowing the future of the tech world will adopt this as the standard.

I do not want this to be a review so I will only be comparing the DISPLAY quality for reason of return, nothing else.

However, comparing it to my 2007 17" Macbook Pro with 1920x1200 Display, I believe this Retina Macbook has "new" technology but not "extraordinary new technology".

In 2004 Apple came out with a 30" Apple Cinema Display with 2560x1800. That was extraordinary. For my 2007 Macbook Pro it has 1920x1200 Glossy Display. 5 years Ago my laptop came with that many pixels already.

The picture quality is better (sharper but not by a lot) in the retina but not significantly better than the 17" IMO. My old Macbook Pro has just a gorgeous display as well and since its glossy, it looks identical to me IMO.

All in all its a nice display but did not blow my mind. It was a different experience for sure coming from an iPhone 3GS to an iPhone 4. That was a significant leap in display quality but not from my 17" Macbook Pro to this 15" Retina Macbook.

i'm getting kinda worried about replacing my macbook - i have a few pressure spots but that is the only problem - anyone know the chances (roughly of course) of getting something with far more problems? is it worth the gamble in your opinion?

Pressure marks would certainly make me return it.

--EDIT-- here's a pic taken with my dslr- much easier to see: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m7t3alO9Yk1r1vwufo1_1280.jpg

*sighs* looks like I voted too soon. Calling Apple tomorrow (er...technically today) to try to get a replacement.

I received mine on the 18th and it was PERFECT. Just now (1am on the 27th) I noticed the ghosting/burn-in :(

Really disappointed. I've read that many people have been able to keep their current MBP until the replacement arrives though, so that's good at least.

also...I STILL haven't received my $100 education gift card. Had to call apple about that when the computer came and was told to give it until August 1st, and then call back if I haven't received it.

this has been a pretty lousy buying experience. :(

I'm really hoping this isn't an issue that will just always appear over time, or I'm going to be going through a load of replacements.

Number 2 seems okay so far, but I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on it.

It had got to the point on my first that text almost looked blurry when scrolling forums (for example) as the writing was already on the screen.

Ach, threads like this really make me second guess myself; I was going to purchase a high end rMBP because of the additional SSD space and the overclocked 650M.

I was prepared to overlook the so-called "stuttering" issues, but it seems that that's not the end of the matter and people are reporting issues with screen burn-in... Cosmetic defects I could overlook but not burn-in.

I picked one up and I am returning it.

Great everything .......... so why the return?

1440x900 being the optimum for Retina and the tighter resolutions just look like a typical screen.

I thought Retina might be enough but the overall price doesn't do it for me.
