Hello guys !
I have a question ! All rMBPs are having this problem ? I am having a rMBP mid 2012 and my display looks ok...Should i be worried ?

I've taken over all good care of my 2013 rMBP and have Applecare. I noticed when cleaning the display today that the middle of the screen has a bunch of spots that are obviously the coating beginning to wear off. It's not nearly as bad as others and you can only see it from an angle. Is it a waste of time to have a genius look at it? It's not so much that it bothers me, but I assume it'll only spread and become worse over time.

Yes, take the chance and replace it.
I'm taking my rMBP 15", it shows the problem right on the camera, but it could get worse.
I have a case number already.
Not sure if all rMBP have this problem though.

Guys!!!

I have a mid 2014 rMBP and this just happened this week! Or at least I just noticed it. I was thinking this wouldn't happen to my display because I've NEVER had a problem any Apple product in years.

I am very shocked. Please tell me this does not require warranty.

Last I heard there was a program to fix those. They were even refunding those who payed out of their own pockets. Regardless, it's all how you talk to them. This particular issue is surely discretionary on the Apple guy's behalf. Be firm, but polite. If he starts to go down the road of telling you to hit the road, talk to him as if you were trying to scold, yet inspire your little brother. He'll send it in either because you did well, or he thinks you're creepy and wants to live.

It does. Perhaps you should start with the definition of the word 'warranty':

The most common kind of warranty on goods is a warranty that the product is free from defects in materials and workmanship. This simply promises that the manufacturer properly constructed the product, out of proper materials. This implies that the product will perform as well as such products customarily do.

If the coating on your screen comes off in normal use, it is not 'free from defects' and this is where you need to talk to Apple about their warranty on your machine.

you need to start with the definition 'normal use' and 'product F up'. i.e. something that should be recalled/replaced doesn't require a warranty.

My mid-2014 Retina MBP's warranty expired over 6 months ago. Yesterday I got my screen replaced for free by my local Apple Store.

It is a known problem and the Genius Bar staff should look your MBP up by Serial number. Apple has apparently issued a free screen replacement program for MBPs with certain serial numbers. Obviously they have traced the quality control issue to a specific run of MBPs that were likely all using screens that came from the same factory and had the same defect present. All in all, it was a painless 24h experience for me. Very happy with the service I was provided by Apple despite not having warranty coverage or Extended Apple Care.

If you have this problem, take your MBP in and talk to a Genius. If your MBP meets the criteria they should replace it for free. All i used was a few drops of water and an Apple microfiber cloth. They were right to take care of me like that.

Just happened when I wiped my screen today.

This was the first time I didn't get AppleCare on something, and now I'm a year past the 1 year warrantee. Sigh.

I guess it can't hurt to ask, is there any official mention of a replacement program anywhere, or just the discretion of the employee you talk to? I'd even settle for a compromise repair price. As long as it doesn't spread I guess I can sadly live with it, too. :(

Afraid to ever wipe my screen again, though.

You don't need Apple Care or a warranty. The screen is defective and Apple has a replacement program in place. Just take it to see an Apple Genius..

How often do you clean your display? And with what ?

Just a microfibre cloth. Never gave me an issue on any of my other Apple products. And my iPhone gets far more frequently wiped against shirt sleeves etc.

Update: Yup they're fixing it. Was nervous since its not a publicly advertised repair program. Hopefully the replacement screen is still decent quality? I was pretty happy with mine otherwise. Fingers crossed.

Also motivated me to pick up AppleCare for my new iPad Pro 9.7. I swear apple is like the only company I'll trust with extended warrantees; I don't think I've ever been let down when I've sought a repair from them. Here's hoping the streak continues!

I smell a class action lawsuit coming out of this....
Why? They're providing a solution

All the people will get is some sort of 25 dollar gift card good towards an apple purchase, while the lawyers rake in the money.

My screen was replaced promptly and seems to be fine quality. Hopefully the issue that caused it in the first place has been rectified on these newer screens :)

Or have their screens replaced free of charge with better screens that don't do this...

Well that didnt last that long......... The other day was cleaning my screen with a microfiber cloth noticed there was a something next to the carmera.... It turned out the anti glare is coming off again..................SMH I had my screen replace by apple about a year ago and now the issue is back with this new screen. On top of that I am passed two years no more warranty from Amex or Apple.........Great........

I created a caseID months ago but didn't have time to get it fixed. I finally made a genius appointment via Apple Care support yesterday and will go on Friday. I'm thinking it shouldn't take longer than an hour.
