With AOD, you know when you have notifications. You don't need to regularly unlock to check like iPhone.
So you only pick it up if you have notifications that you want to attend to. It is not 100% but good enough. Alternatively can put the phone on a stand and unlock with iris or face

My Note 8 has had no updates... its worked from day one this way. Samsung Pay even has both the Iris and FPS options listed so you can use either to pay. Did you try it, or are you just assuming you can't? The only two that you can't enable at the same time are Iris and Face. I tried Face for a few weeks but didn't like it and switched to Iris. It works very well, is quick, and works with my glasses on or off.
Another Note 8 feature is that for videos, the form factor works well to watch a video in the top part of the screen while using another app on the bottom portion. The longer size makes this work extremely well on the Note 8, and it is very practical. Like I can be watching a how to video on YouTube, or a movie on Netflix, and also posting on MacRumors at the same time.

Sorry, this is exactly what I mean't. You can't have both iris and face. Fingerprint works great, it just on a bad location for me, particularly coming from an iPhone, but got used to it now. I am more fan of a face recognition that works well, then fingerprint sensor. To be honest, I only need one that works great, that's it. No need for tons of them with mediocre quality.

It's interesting reading this thread because I did the exact opposite. I went from a Note 8 to the iPhone X.
You will absolutely love the Note 8. It is a phenomenal phone. Incredible screen. Incredible battery life (if you are smart with some of your settings). Incredible camera (although the camera app can be a little cumbersome when coming from the simplistic one of the iPhone). A plethora of bio-metrics to choose from (Iris scanner is 100% the best). A headphone jack, the S-Pen and Samsung Pay.
But as I was using it, I missed my iPhone 7 for two reasons and two reasons only: iMessage and One-handed use. There is simply nothing that comes close to iMessage on Android. Right off the bat make sure you download Textra and use that as your messaging app. It is good with sending no-limit MMS files, if you make a small change in the settings. When it comes to the Note 8, one handed use is virtually impossible without a hand placement shuffle/dance. Keep in mind, I have very gargantuan hands. When you do that dance, you get a moment of fear that you may drop the phone because the glass is slippery. I would highly recommend a grippy case. If you run the Note 8 naked, and try to do the shuffle dance, you will drop it at some point if you aren't careful. When you use the Note 8, you will certainly want to use your left hand for security and right hand for touch.
There are two things I will miss about the Note 8. One is the screen. My god, if you consume a lot of content, that screen real estate and quality especially if you do your own color balancing in the setting, is on its own level. People will tell you the Note 8's screen is over-saturated, but they are clearly ignorant to the fact that you can very thoroughly optimize the phone's color profile to whatever you want (an option that more manufacturers need to give their consumers). The second thing is notifications. There are an absolute mess on iOS. It's significantly better and more organized on Android. I forgot how refreshing it was to have notifications cleanly grouped.
Enjoy your Note 8 man. You are in for pleasant surprise.

I find that I can better handle the Note 8 one handed than my 6S+, and the FPS on the back makes that easier.
How does Textra overcome the MMS file limits? What are the settings changes you mentioned? I have been using the built in messaging app, but may give Textra a try. I agree that messaging is the biggest iOS advantage but thus far its not been anything but a minor annoyance.
Great... very informative and helpful message. I find the Samsung software very good. I will probably buy another Samsung device.

Go into Textra. Click the three dots on the top right. Click Settings. Click MMS. Change "Carrier Send Limit" to "Carrier has no limit". Boom. You should be able to send a larger sized MMS file now.
With the one-handed use, I was mainly talking about top to bottom. The Note 8 is actually narrower than the 6S+ which is why it was easier to handle side to side. However, if you are texting on this thing with one hand (which I can do perfectly fine), and you attempted to draw down the notification shade, prepare for that aforementioned shuffle. That is the scary part I was talking about. I have to shuffle my hand from the bottom of the device to a position where my thumb can pull the shade down. With the Note 8, you can also elect to enable the fingerprint scanner gestures as well which helps.
Just get one of the gesture based app like pie control. While holding the phone one handed, just swipe from right edge (at various angles) to activate one of the nav controls (home, back, task, notification etc). Problem solved.

Personally I hope things do work out for you with the Note 8, I tried to switch to a S8+ when it came out but it didn't quite work for my needs in particular but the Note 8 is a solid phone and I wish you all the best!
I can certainly understand the reasoning. Especially as going to the 8 doesn't feel like as much of an upgrade as it should as it looks practically identical to the ones of the last 3 years. It's why I knew I had to get the X, because it looked different. I would have stayed with my 6 if there was only an 8.
In between having my iPhones I've had a HTC M7 and an S6 edge, for different reasons and I really liked both of them, didn't really have anything bad to say about the phones. All I can say is moving back to the iPhone after using both of them was he biggest breath of fresh air possible. I mean I love the look of the S8, looks like a great phone but I would have an iPhone 6 over it, just simply because of the operating system.
if you can overlook and get past the operating system then go for it mate, I almost wish I could so I had more choices when picking a new phone but I just can't. Even small things like iMessenger and the emoji's were just lovely to have back when going back to iOS.

From my experience with both, your statement was true several years ago. Today, the tables are turning. My Note 8 just works, quick and smooth. I've not needed any updates to fix anything. How many releases does Apple need each round to get it right? Their stuff is getting buggier and buggier at release time, and the competition seems to be getting cleaner and cleaner. How do you even break the calculator app????
You can beat iOS. I can buy any phone I want, and the Note 8 (to me) beats iOS. I found iOS getting more and more complex, but yet still being somewhat boring... if that is even possible. Part of it is that all the crap that Apple is adding is of no interest to me. On the X, I can animate myself into a poop emoji. On the Note 8, I can run two apps on the screen at the same time, watching a video, while responding to email. That is the kind of stuff that has led me away from iOS.
hmm... Android still requires regular rebooting (S8 even has a 'device maintenance' setting which clears the cahce and background programs .
Also, while installing 'banking apps' on android, isn't there a reminder to have anti-virus?

They include device maintenance for the same reason apple allows us to close apps. It makes people feel better. It's not really needed. And no I never get prompted to install an AV when installing banking apps.

I have not had to reboot my Note 8 in weeks. I have never seen any warning about anti-virus and I have about 6 or 7 financial institution apps loaded.
On the contrary, I have seen several new stories about apps spoofing the iCloud login prompt which seems to happen in iOS all the time for no apparent reason, so I would probably fall for that quite easily.

My similar situation and have been iPhone since 2008-ish, coming from a Pocket PC. But the Note 8 is the first phone that for me personally, matches iOS devices. It's as smooth and stable as an iPhone and is superior in features. This version of Android seems pretty solid so far.
I have an iPhone X 256GB and and Series 3 LTE watch. I also have a Note 8 and a Frontier Gear 3. I pretty much have all the same apps on both platforms and can switch at will. Luckily, they both use microsim cards now, and it isn't much effort to switch my primary and backup cellphone numbers.
While I still believe iOS apps are just better overall, the truth is, the iPhone X just underwhelmed. One of my big things is storage, I like lots of it for media. And, disappointingly, the iPhone 8/X did not match the new iPad Pro in its 512GB storage, despite a single chip solution being available. Meanwhile, my Note 8 has a 400GB Sandisk microSD card in it, 464GB total storage. And that S-Pen is pretty handy.
And I hate to say it, but the Frontier S3 i jut better than the Apple watch. First, a round watch seems less geeky to me. Plus, the front face dial destroys that little side wheel, which I find a pain to use. I think the round face just shows more info and the text seems bigger. I enjoy using the Frontier much more than the Apple watch.
I'm still keeping the X, but I think for the first time in years, the Android phone, Note 8, will be my primary.

I don't quite understand how this can be your reason, note8 has fingerprint scanner on the back so you'll have to pick it up when on your desk which is more troublesome than hovering over and their facial recognition/iris scanner isn't comparable to face id.
I had an S8 and recently switched to iphone X and the X just blows the S8 out of the water performance/usability wise.
