Much more a fan of Apple Maps for driving directions than Google Maps. The navigation instructions in a city are far easier to use. Rather than tell you street names, forcing you to read signs which may or may not be visible or readable, or perhaps may not be there at all, Apple Maps tells you to "turn at this light" or "go passed the light, then turn left", and stuff like that. Have to keep on eye on the map every now and then to be completely certain (as is the case with all maps apps), but you definitely don't have to drive off the road trying to read street signs. That's a huge win.
That is definitely a cool feature.

I am aware Apples headquarter is located in the states... I stand by my comment.

Example, Shell is originally a Dutch company, they act like a global company because they are, most of the revenue is outside of The Netherlands, Apple's revenue is also more outside of the States.

It's a global company whether you like it or not.

(Actually...I hate these local sentiments) What's in it for you that Apple is local or not?

I consider myself a global citizen, I really don't have such sentiments for where I came from, nor where I live.

The vast majority of Apple's development and research workforce are in the US. Hence the US emphasis. Apple is a tech company and the majority of tech value is in intellectual property. To take Maps as an example, the algorithms to extract building data from LIDAR are more important to Apple than the LIDAR unit itself, which everybody can buy.

Apple can do this anywhere in the world, but as an American company, it does it in the United States.

This is very different from Shell. You stumbled into the perfect contrast: Shell's product is completely fungible and is difficult to ship. Shell has no choice but to have refineries globally because it has to be where the crude is and where the refined product demand is.

Apple in December began testing an expansion of its more detailed Apple Maps app in the Central and Southeastern parts of the United States, along with Alaska, and that updated Maps content is now rolling out to all customers.

The revamped Maps app features more extensive geographical details, with updated buildings, roads, parks, sports fields, parking lots, foliage, pools, pedestrian pathways, and bodies of water.

To get its mapping data, Apple uses its own vehicles equipped with LIDAR sensors and cameras. Apple has been using this method to collect mapping information for years now.

Apple began rolling out its updated mapping app to customers starting in iOS 12, and at the 2019 Worldwide Developer Conference, Apple said all customers in the United States would receive the improved Maps app by the end of the year.

Apple has made good on that promise with the rollout of the new mapping terrain to large swathes of the United States, and the updated Maps are now available across most of the country. It could still take some time for all users in the Central and Southeastern areas of the U.S. to see the new content.

Apple plans to bring the new Maps app to additional countries in 2020.

(Thanks, @tricil and @NateThompson!)

perhaps drawing the borderline
completing rollout? Damn Yanks.

take your time, Apple. Take your own sweet time.

@ least they did include Crimea to Russia and Taiwan to China. Nothing to report there.

I just took Shell as an example, might not have been the best choice, lots of others to chose from though.

This article just isn’t correct. The rollout is actually just limited testing. The majority of Apple Map users, including me, do not have new map data for the Southeast.

"Completing rollout" is a headline from MacRumors alluding to Apple's rollout of the U.S. by the end of 2019.

More countries are being added next year, with Europe and Canada most likely being the most likely places added next since they have been actively spotted gathering data for an upcoming rollout.
The next phase includes Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, The UK, San Marino (!) and more. Here’s the link:

There are plenty of things that Apple doesn't monetize but provides to keep you in their sandbox as much as possible. Windows 10 costs $119 and upgrades are not free. OS-Mac, iOS, tv-os are all "free" with the purchase of expensive hardware, and the upgrades are free for life.

Define "for life" so that people have an accurate picture of what you mean.

I have a 2008 MacBook Pro that is alive and well. It doesn't receive updates anymore. "For life" does not mean the life of the device. It means a finite time that Apple will support the device, which kind of kills the meaning of "for life". Pun unavoidable :) .

People who buy iPhones insist on there being location services and maps. Google used to provide them, but they insisted on terms Apple couldn’t agree to.

What were the terms Apple couldn't agree to? Serious question.

I’m still showing old school TomTom maps here in Minnesota. Is this a “I need to be on a beta” thing?

Paying Google for turn by turn and allowing them to collect data on users I think.

Apple Maps is the worst of the bunch. It still can not set up more than 1 destination when using directions, I still get turned around only to have to do a u-turn (Apple Map swill have me exit a highway, get back on teh other side, and then do a u-turn - seriously?? . Yes, I have reported these problems and feedback. For 3 years now. I no longer use Apple Maps when I need to depend on actual accurate data.

you can add a destination on your route. I do it often with CarPlay.

I’ve stopped using waze because of the hop on hop off highway issues you mentioned. I like the look of Apple Maps, but google is the best IMO.

The maps app sucks. Here in germany ive seen little improvement over the past few years.

take your time, Apple. Take your own sweet time.
Why would they rush it given the initial maps debacle, and why wouldn’t they concentrate on America first?

Australia will be completed by the end of 2020.
Like I said to another poster, why wouldn’t they take care of America first and why would you want a rushed product?

you’ll get it when you get it. Or you can use Google Maps. Or move to the United States.

I hate to be that guy, but we have one more year left in the decade. We went through this at the turn of the millennium.

We started at year 1 through 10. Year 11 is the next decade. And so on and so forth.
While I agree with your definition of decades, centuries and millennia, the simple truth is that we think of decades in another way. I’ve been wrestling with this for weeks now. I thought about how we talk about the 20th century. We refer to the ‘20s, ‘30s, ‘40s and so on. In each case we’re referring to the decade of years starting with the same number. So, it’s easy to see how people get this whole thing slightly wrong. Let it be, and enjoy the year ahead, is my advise. Quietly remember the facts but don’t let them interfere with the popular storyline!

The cars have been spotted in Australia already, the did my street a few months ago (Lake Macquarie area) so they are getting there. Hopefully Australia will be complete some time in 2020
Australia is definitely on the next list: https://mwp14.ls.apple.com/imagecollection/au
Enjoy it when it gets there! I’m looking forward to it arriving here in Ireland in 2020, too.

I hope so, but as a Canadian that seems pretty optimistic to me.
Don’t fret. Canada is definitely coming soon:
along with several other countries.

Middle of nowhere Maine...see those buildings/homes that were never there before?

Apple has mapped the entire NE...all of it is new including everywhere you listed.

Grey blocks is not very informative! Clicking on it should report back an address.

In the city these blocks are often a run of buildings which you can clearly tell are discreet within the satellite view. Still no street view in Boston (look ahead). If you plug in a discreet address the pin is not very precise! I would have expected the pin would be close to the doorway on a group of townhouses. Not the back door (if its even present).

The single thing that's kept me from switching away from Google's maps is that Google's display of traffic congestion information is easier to grok at a glance. Google adopted the standard green-yellow-red-black paradigm most of the older traffic display systems used, and it's just easier to quickly comprehend.

I notice that, with the revamp, Apple's at least gotten rid of that annoying system of dashes they used to use. But still, it seems like they're trying to be different just for the sake of being different, and sacrificing quick visual interpretation because of it.
Just commenting to say: perfect use of the word "grok." Nice!

Is MacRumors still sticking to this story when it hasn't been widely released? I think they jumped the gun on this one.

EDIT: Email sent to the author of this article. Her sources are two individuals on Twitter who just happened to get the pre-released map update. Wide release mean EVERYONE gets it. This article needs to be pulled or corrected.

Now we know why it's called "Mac Rumors". Seems like the author or any editor could have actually checked first. Apple has about 7 hours left by my clock to finish the rollout "by the end of 2019". I actually saw the updated map on my iPad on Christmas day, but no other device. Then poof it was gone.....

Apple Maps in India is completely useless. Not even basic directions from A to B. I get that taking on Google in this sector is a tall ask but by now the rollout to other countries should have achieved more penetration.

Given the buggy software issues we have seen for the last two years there need to be big changes at Apple about how it approaches software and services if it is going to offer a real alternative to Google.

Based on what they’ve introduced over the past year in the United States, they have proven they can and will succeed with Maps and in many cases may exceed Google in many areas.

Just because it hasn’t hit other countries yet does not mean it will not happen soon.
