The Northeast (of the U.S.) has been completed since the end of September.

Tell that to my iPhone and iPad both are running the latest iOS as well as my MacBook Pro!

Concord, Lexington and in the Boson proper Charlestown & North End! Just to name a few areas. Go north Maine is not even touched beyond the highways and major city & towns.

Apple is a global company, fact.

But, I do understand Apple needs to start somewhere, they can't update Maps in the whole world instantly.
Correction. Apple is an American company, fact. Though they do have global distribution and partners, they were founded, are based in and have their headquarters in America and are an American company. Just like Samsung is a S. Korean company with global distribution.

Middle of nowhere Maine...see those buildings/homes that were never there before?

Apple has mapped the entire NE...all of it is new including everywhere you listed.

What’s interesting to me is that, of all the states done, Mississippi appears to be the only one “half done”. A nice neat horizontal line separates the new map structure from the old. It’s handy, though. From a zoomed out view, looking at Mississippi, you CLEARLY when you aren’t looking at the new maps yet :)

Why does Apple bother with Maps? How do they monetize it?
If they monetize it, it’s indirectly at best. It’s pretty much because they were getting bit mapped tiles from Google but preferred the vector data (data that was available on Android) because it displays better/faster with higher quality. Google wouldn’t provide the vector map data, so Apple set out to do their own.

Apple Maps exists because of decisions Google made.

There are plenty of things that Apple doesn't monetize but provides to keep you in their sandbox as much as possible. Windows 10 costs $119 and upgrades are not free. OS-Mac, iOS, tv-os are all "free" with the purchase of expensive hardware, and the upgrades are free for life.

I keep trying Apple maps every few months...and keep getting frustrated. The UI is clearer and easier to read than Google Maps while in motion. However, it still gets so many things completely and totally wrong that I’m forced to switch back. Here’s an example for the expected “phanboi” response:

Apple maps is saying I need to turn west...to go east on the 101. It routes you west one exit, where it instructs you to get off the freeway, turn left and go under, and then make another left and get back on the freeway heading east! It has done this for several weeks, despite me daily reporting this problem. Google Maps makes no such error. Granted, this is near my house, but I know the area. How can I have ANY confidence in this product when navigating in areas that are unfamiliar with me???

Personally I’ve also had mixed results with Apple Maps. It’s not terrible but it’s not great. Google Maps, like you, has been better for me. I don’t have much confidence in Apple Maps, but periodically I try it again to see if it’s improved for me.

I’ve been feeling this since Apple Maps was standalone. I generally think Apple 1st party apps as the iconic example of mediocrity. When I set the bar low, I’m not disappointed 😂

Sincerely...Apple Phanboi...

I’m thousands of miles away and this is just a routing example to see what would happen. I wonder if it would replicate your experience if it was actually implemented??

I hate when people have an issue and I can’t replicate.

EDIT: Or did I just give an example of the opposite direction?

EDIT 2: Nope...works fine in the opposite direction as well for me.

I tried it, too. Same results. It would be REALLY interesting to know what’s going on here, because that’s a very curious route to suggest!

They're not very good around the Big Island of Hawai'i. I just checked and found failure to locate important points, rivers and streams in the wrong place (including in towns), roads that appear to be driveable but have not been driveable for years (literally!).

At least this time if I ask for directions from the airport in Kona to my house, it does show the best route. A year and a half ago, it took a friend about 4 miles out of his way, with the same origin-destination pair. I suppose that's progress.

I continue to be unimpressed except of course BTN (Better Than Nothing).

I am aware Apples headquarter is located in the states... I stand by my comment.

Example, Shell is originally a Dutch company, they act like a global company because they are, most of the revenue is outside of The Netherlands, Apple's revenue is also more outside of the States.

It's a global company whether you like it or not.

(Actually...I hate these local sentiments) What's in it for you that Apple is local or not?

I consider myself a global citizen, I really don't have such sentiments for where I came from, nor where I live.

Europe will be next I guess.
In my opinion Apple is as good as for GMaps, used them both but think Apple Maps is better here.

"Completing rollout" is a headline from MacRumors alluding to Apple's rollout of the U.S. by the end of 2019.

"More countries are being added next year"

Noticed 2 days ago a Apple mapping car working in Frankston, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. So more upgrades on the way in Aus.

Nope, but what you can do is to add the control centre widget for dark mode, which make it much easier to switch by just dragging down and clicking on it.

Dang. How did I not know this was an option in the Control Center??? Thank you!

I hate to be that guy, but we have one more year left in the decade. We went through this at the turn of the millennium.

We started at year 1 through 10. Year 11 is the next decade. And so on and so forth.

Yoh just know there will be an endless series of roaring twenties parties until everyone is thoroughly sick of them.

Thanks for this - my example is about 2-3 weeks old. I just tried it again and now it works - I'll give it another try. That said, I'll likely need a couple of months of mistake-free local driving (where I actually know where I'm going) before I trust Apple Maps in areas I'm unfamiliar with.

Apple not buying Waze was a huge miss on their part.

I don’t agree...it doesn’t fit into what they do from a mapping standpoint and they would never approve of the features that people use Waze for in the first place.

Google will continue to chip away at implementing Waze-specific features as a way to stay ahead of Apple in their mind until there is no reason to use Waze at all. Waze will die a slow death and be gone in 3 years if Google keeps adding their features.

Much more a fan of Apple Maps for driving directions than Google Maps. The navigation instructions in a city are far easier to use. Rather than tell you street names, forcing you to read signs which may or may not be visible or readable, or perhaps may not be there at all, Apple Maps tells you to "turn at this light" or "go passed the light, then turn left", and stuff like that. Have to keep on eye on the map every now and then to be completely certain (as is the case with all maps apps), but you definitely don't have to drive off the road trying to read street signs. That's a huge win.
