I have the clip-on Nano, which I love and use all the time. The new form factor is not for me.

The only complaint I have about my Nano is that it's only 16gb. Would love a little more storage.

On a side note...Once you have boiled the person who invented the term "fanboy" in honey, there will be no need to "stake" him to the ant hill. You can just lay him on the ant hill, he's not going anywhere... he is dead.

Mm, basically a small ugly iPod Touch, with a crippled version of iOS dubbed "nano OS" (maybe someone will jailbreak it so it can run full iOS apps heh)

I see it as an example of where Apple has lost their edge. I'm not going to blame the death of Jobs as they were kind of starting to lose it while he was still around, although that will obviously go down in the history books as the reason. A shame.

I mean, it's not bad. As the review says, it's a good 2010 device, and when you think about it there's nothing else on the market like what we had in mind (a nano sized music player with cloud support) anyway. But it's Apple not really trying, and just plodding on with the same old same old - like they've been doing with their Macs since the Intel transition in 2006. They crowdsource the biggest things that people want (thus the retina iPad) but seem to have stopped innovating. They're certainly not making bad products at all, it's just that rightly the reviews and the fans expected more, and seem to be ending up disappointed.

I expected the iPod Nano to remain small and get wifi/Bluetooth/microphone/loudspeaker so I can use it as a remote for the TV and take calls when my iPhone is not within reach. Imagine lying in the hammock or sofa, wearing the Nano like a wristband watch and answering the phone with it or see incoming text messages/email titles/reminders/etc. THAT would be the next "must have" to me. :)

HELL yes!! I imagined the next nano to run iOS in the same form albeit smaller. Able to connect via bluetooth to your iPhone, or computer via wifi. I imagined having a nano on your wrist for pertinent info from an iPhone in your pocket, bag, etc. Call? hit the nano to answer through a bluetooth headset leaving your hands free.
Apple, go back and make it better like you did with the shuffle.

Why couldn't they make a 16GB iPod Touch for $199 or even $229 like the did when the iPod Touch 4th Gen first came out. $299 is going to make people go to an out and get an out of date "Smart Music Player."

Agreed. The price is just not appealing at all. I was getting my step daughter an ipod (she is 5), so went with a refurb 4th GEN because the price of the new ones is insane. $199 or like you said, $229 would sell like hot cakes.

I just wanted to throw something out there regarding the iPod Touch.

So many people see this as "just" an "iPod". I also read a review saying that the iPod Touch is for kids old enough to play iOS games, or kids too young to have a cell phone. Thus the reviewer claimed it's target market was a very narrow age range for kids.

I am a grad student, and all of my friends right now are either law, medical, or dental students. There are tons of us who own iPod Touches. Remember the days of PDAs? PalmPilots, Handsprings, Compaqs? An iPod touch is a PDA. I have never played a game on mine, and I rarely use it for music. I use it to schedule appointments and meetings, keep track of schoolwork, email, web, etc. It's indispensable.

An iPhone can end up costing you around $2700 in two years. My iPod + cell plan costs me $1000 in two years (and I have access to WiFi about 95% of my day). Pretty major savings there. Especially when everything is paid for with student loans.

$300 is about the price point I always paid for my PDAs back in the day. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

I love the iPod Touch... :)

I agree with what you said, but the market is the bolded part. paying $300 is just not appealing.

My little girl used to be the target audience for the iPod Touch. That audience expects more for that kind of money now. If the iPad Mini isn't HD and isn't below 300 dollars, she'll just spend her Xmas/birthday money on a Kindle Fire HD. There's so many better options than the Touch now.

I agree for $199 the Kindle Fire HD is a nice device, the screen is excellent, it gives you direct access to books, prime, music etc, and it has most of the popular apps and Games that any kid would want, its a better buy than the touch right now

Don't think Apple is no longer trying.

mp players of any kind are dinosaurs for those who have iPhones Androids or such and the category is just matured to the point where it will disappear.

Why would I schlepp around 2 devices?

This is now clearly an entry product into the Apple ecosystem as stated.

I do agree with another posters point that this nano should have been left small in size like a wristwatch or so. No need for a screen like they had with the chewing gum stick nano at the time.

Make that a 64GB player as small as possible at a price under $ 100 and we have something. Or 16GB so it can be cheap and a removable SD card

Other than that it's that products last stance.

don't *you* dare approve of calling someone a "spoiled brat" when you know nothing about them, nor what their capacity for learning is. nobody was comparing anyone. re-read the post.

he also set up a store on his iPad and sold pop on the corner using the "square" to process credit cards when he was 10. he'd sell you 1 for a $1.00, 2 for $1.75. he probably made (net) $300 *last* summer.

he rides his bike, plays with his friends, skis, snowboards, set up a minecraft server, plays flag football, soccer, swims twice a week, and plays the violin.

it's amazing what kids can accomplish when they are given the opportunity to excel.

i'm pretty sure that flying to SFO, driving to stanford, and seeing san francisco and learning how to program with 100s of other kids is part of the "world out there".

no, these devices didn't exist when we were kids, and the devices my son's son will have don't exist now. but, they do exist, and they will exist. adapt or die.

This is about the 6 year old not the 10 lol

Stop trolling

Great for the 10 though! Keep up the good work

Someone please tell me where i can buy that generation iPod Nano, i've been looking for one for ages.

Believe it not, in Indonesia they can still be found new.

If I remember well it was in the Carrefour, more than $100, so I am pretty sure they are the real ones, Carrefour does not sell copies AFAIK.

I mad bro

okay let's disregard the brat comment but at such a young age do u feel that an ipod touch is a good development tool?

i remember my parents wouldn't let me play video games only certain times or the day as was the tv.

i imagine the ipod touch is with her at all hours.

curious would u give your child an ipod touch?

Yes I would give my child an iPod touch. Just because my niece has a Touch doesn't mean that she is isolated from the outside. She has tons of friends, and she'll listen to music on the touch with her friends and she can take pictures. For most kids now its not a privilege to have a computer in the house or a game console. Just because you couldn't play games all day doesn't mean that someone else with less strict rules does. Same goes with the touch just because you didn't have a touch growing up,doesn't mean that someone in the time of technology shouldn't have one either. Times have changed stuff is different now.

Good grief! I came here to read about the ipod not some silly argument about some privileged kid getting a toy that many struggling adults can't afford. I know... it makes some jealous but GET OVER IT! They have money and they are spending it on their kid!! Okay, now MOVE ON!!!!

Back to the topic... I like the nano in theory but it NEEDS at least 32GB to stay relevant and desirable... preferably 64 GB. And the ipod classic needs to have either a 128 GB SSD upgrade and some new software or at least a 320+ GB HDD upgrade.

Oh yes and many people actually just want to listen to music on these devices and don't care about playing with apps. I have an HTPC for movies and games. Tiny screens suck for gaming and movie watching. MP3 players can plug into car/headphones/home stereo so they benefit most from greater storage capacity/less hassle. Unless you can have HDMI out on the thing then I don't care for movies on the ipod line. Gaming... like I said... that's what PCs/Xboxs are for.

Right there with you on the 32gb nano wish list. And a friend of mine so wanted the classic to get a bump to a 250gb drive. Guess it wasn't in the plans.

I lost my Classic 120GB and was going to replace but there's no way I am paying $250 again for the older tech. It should be around $100 max to me. I'm also tired of worrying about the HDD getting corrupted when transporting and such.

So today I bought a refurbished 16gb Nano 4th gen. just to have something for the car and such until Apple decides to quit milking the current classic line or introduce higher storage capacities in the current Nano. The whole Touch line just has me very disappointed with the $400 price for a low 64GB that I am waiting for something else not released before I buy a brand new Apple device... I can go without having my whole collection with me if it means saving my money for something much more worthwhile. So I'd either like a decent Nano that can hold most of my favorite stuff or a reasonably priced newer device that can hold my whole collection. Then there could be the Touch and Ipad for whenever I win the lottery and want lots of "extra" toys.

5th gen nano was the best and last of the true nano design. scoll wheel, glosssy metalic colors,

to bad apple didn do anything with the ipod classic, even if they slag it, to it in a bang with a limited edition design

Chuck-Norris, you made me cry.
Why did they get rid of the click wheel?

I love my 6th gen Nano. It's the perfect size for working out, running etc. Clip it on and go. And with my small bluetooth transmitter and Motorola bluetooth stereo headphones, it just doesn't get any better. It plays music and does it well. That's what iPods do. They don't need to do anything else, the touch being the exception.

Maybe Apple can make the nano run iOS in the future. Give it the same resolution as the per-retina iPod touch.

don't agree with this article....

The article fails to mention the main reason for the cost of Apples products.... QUALITY! I still own an iPhone 3gs and a first generation iPod touch. Both still have great battery life and work flawlessly. I've tried Android devices, and they are all flimsy. That's the only way they can get 15 new products a year out, and the technology they claim to have barely ever works.

iPod Nano

I wasn't sure what to expect exactly when I ordered the iPod Nano - but it arrived today and I love it. I know that I can play music through my iPhone, but there is just something about having a dedicated music player for the times I don't want to carry the phone due to the size. For what it's worth, I'm very glad I made the purchase.

I also suggest naming Apple "iPad, Inc."

BTW, I will buy an iPod Touch when it gets cellular data, something that will never happen, I'm sad to guess.

iPod touch with cellular data is an iPhone :)
