Is that relatively easy to do or not? I'm a no programming expert, I only know the basics of how that works.

I have only compiled software via MacPorts in the past. It was easy but some applications take a fair amount of time to compile.

It would require Xcode to be installed, AFAIK.

But, for $1.99 to install it on all of your systems, you might as well purchase it from the app store.

It releases you from your obligation to donate to the project if you use and/or benefit from the project enough to justify making a donation anyway.

I just don't like the fact that the menubar icon can't be hidden, AFAIK.

Does this mean that other applications won't be able to install it without permission anymore? If so, then I'm all for it.

I want to take developers *cough adobe* who drop this thing on my computer without permission out to the woodshed.

I want my 1.99 back!

Not only does this app NOT work on my 2011 MBA running Lion, but the only app it registers is Adium.

According to Growl's website, apps that support growl should automatically register with Growl.

I've had Growl running on since I bought it on the Mac App Store. No iTunes, no Sparrow.. just adium.

And even then notifications do not appear.

I've sent a review to the Mac App Store, hopefully I'm not the only one who is having problems.

Anyone have Growl working perfect on their Lion OS?

Apps automatically register when they are launched for the first time after growl is installed.

Not all apps support Growl.

Growl notifications have to be turned on in the Adium preferences, if I remember correctly.

I've turned on the Growl notifications in the Sparrow email app itself. Does not register in the Growl Application list panel.

I thought iTunes was registered with Growl.. at least it did on my 2010 MBP.

I made sure the apps I have on my MBA worked with Growl. On the Growl website itself, it supports Sparrow, iTunes and Adium.

Not showing up in my Growl Application list, except Adium.

It's not about the price. It's about the challenge of doing something new. ;)

I'm very much in favor for paying for useful software (and as soon as they get rid of the menu bar icon, I'm buying it), but by charging for this they've made it so it will slowly become less useful. The cycle will be:

1. Less users will install Growl since they can't or won't pay for it
2. Less developers will add Growl support because less users have it
3. Lather, rinse, repeat

They should charge for it until they break even, then make it free. They could do this every year, with a "pledge drive" just beforehand to try and avoid having to make it non-free. I'd pitch in $10. Developers of paid apps that use it would probably pitch in more.

Or, Apple could just implement its own system like iOS, which would be best.

It may be possible for app developers to compile the source code for Growl 1.3 and provide it as an optional free install similar to how Growl was included with app installs in the past.

The only barrier to this is that Growl 1.3 is Lion only.

As I am using a 2011 Macbook Air that came with Lion OS, Growl was never installed on this machine.

Growl was not optimized for Lion at the time, which is why the Growl on the Mac App Store works for 10.7 or above.

FYI, Growl 1.2.2 works in Lion if you continue to have issues with Growl 1.3.

I haven't noticed any issues with Growl 1.2.2 in Lion but I don't install any extras that are more likely to cause issues.

I want my 1.99 back!

Same here. Growl 1.2.2 was working fine, but I thought I would try the new version. Downloaded from App Store, installed, and was guided to run the uninstaller for the old version. After that there was no indication of Growl 1.3 anywhere, and I tried reinstalling to no avail. Finally gave up and reinstalled 1.2.2.

How does one go about getting a refund?

Call the Apple Customer Service and explain them your situation.

I had no idea Growl 1.2.2 worked on Lion... I was misinformed that it didn't work.

Does anyone know if HardwareGrowler is included in the 1.3 app?

Googling for the hardwaregrowler lion crash issue, I saw where a dev said it was fixed in 1.3 and would be available on the Mac App Store. I don't know if that means that HardwareGrowler will be released as a separate program on the App Store, or if the dev is referring to the main Growl app and that HG will be released as an extra to be procured elsewhere.

If you have 1.3, does the existing HG binary still crash?

Okay I installed Growl 1.2.2 onto my MBA and uninstalled Growl 1.3...

Still doesn't work. No notifications and only Adium is detected.

I guess it's a problem with my MBA.

Perhaps another third party app I bought from the Mac App Store is interfering with Growl? Hyperdock perhaps?

This is very frustrating.

I don't believe that the MAS version includes an uninstaller. I'm fairly certain that the previous version of Growl has to removed by the user.

If you're currently running Growl 1.2.2 or earlier, download and run the Growl uninstaller prior to purchasing and downloading Growl 1.3 from the Mac App Store. Your preferences and settings should be untouched after running the uninstaller.

Did you use the Growl uninstaller script to delete the previous version of Growl before installing Growl 1.3?

http://growl.info/downloads

Also, go to: System Preferences -> Users & Groups -> Login items. Then delete GrowlHelper as it is no longer needed. You may also want to delete the preference for GrowlHelper in ~/Library/Preferences.

I'm all for supporting developers, but this is going to kill the future of Growl. Better they ask for donations than shoot themselves in the foot like this.

1. Less users will install Growl since they can't or won't pay for it
2. Less developers will add Growl support because less users have it
3. Lather, rinse, repeat

Exactly.

Of course, none of this matters if Apple ever decides to release Notification Center for OS X.

First you need to uninstall 1.2 by going to the Growl site and downloading/running the uninstall tool before you download and install 1.3. After that the mas version works perfectly. Also GrowlMail still work under Lion with the new Apple Mail even with Growl 1.3.

I paid for it because Growl is a great program and I want to continue to support future development work. Having it the mas and paying for it supports those efforts IMHO.

Some apps need to upgraded to work with Growl 1.3.

For example, YoruFukurou in the MAS doesn't seem to work with Growl 1.3.

I got Growl 1.2 to work on my MBA/Lion now. The problem was installing the "Extras" in the Growl Installation Disk Image. I forgot to double click to install GrowlTunes and the other plug-ins.

Whenever I play a new track, Growl shows a notification! Works with Skype and Adium now.

I have a feeling for Growl 1.3 to work, you'll need to install the Extras, which isn't provided in the Mac App Store Version. I could be wrong as this is just my theory. We'll see when the reviews start coming in next week.

Sparrow (which i downloaded from the Mac App Store) does not work with Growl 1.3 or 1.2

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

I never really *got* growl. I mean, when my computer has completed a task or I finish a download or get an email (or whatever), my computer already tells me. I don't think I need to be notified again, do I?

Anyways, I remember having this installed (without me knowing) when I installed Dropbox. It was so intrusive I thought my Mac had a virus.

I suspect the reason some apps no longer function with Growl 1.3 is due to Growl no longer supporting the library used by some apps to communicate with Growl via Java.

This means that those apps using the Java based interface have to be updated to use the GNTP specification to communicate with Growl.

This is not necessarily a bad thing given that Growl did cause issues in relation to Java for some users. Specifically, Java wouldn't function correctly in the browser with Growl installed.

Does it have an option to switch off the menu bar icon? My 13" screen is already groaning under the weight of all the others.

Seriously, there are perfectly good apps I've avoided buying for this reason alone.
