Happy to pay for it. Don't like two things though; The menubar icon and the fact it uses the discret GPU in my MBP.

I don't know that I care either way, but how do you know that it uses the GPU? I'd be surprised if it needed to do anything intensive enough to warrant openCL code.

I had to goof around with the applescript rule I use for Mail.app notifications but it only took a few minutes. Everything else seems to be working.

If you run into an app that worked fine with pre-MAS versions but doesn't with 1.3, the app needs an update to the client Growl libraries. It seems 1.3 requires client side 1.2.1 support or newer. About half of my Growl enabled apps will need updates.

I use an app called gfxcardstatus to see what apps require the discrete GPU, but something strange must have happened because it no longer uses the AMD card. So don't know what that was about.

Ah. Interesting. Thanks!

Following up in case anybody else is interested.

1) Installed Growl 1.3 from the MAS; from what I can tell, it did NOT come with the traditional Extras (GrowlTunes, HardwareGrowler, GrowlMail, growlnotify). I already had HwG installed, so if it was installed when the MAS version installed, I didn't notice it. I'm assuming that if one wants these extras, one would have to download 1.2.2 and install them from there.

2) HardwareGrowler still crashes on Lion, even under Growl 1.3. In fact, it seems to crash more frequently. At this point, I'm not sure there's a good reason to upgrade to 1.3 besides showing monetary support to the development team, as 1.2.2 itself ran perfectly fine, and it was HwG itself that needed updating.

1. Yeah that was a pain, I had to go and download 1.2 again and grab the extras. Strange they didn't include them but at least they all work under 1.3.

2. I tried HwG and it works fine under 1.3 I even installed the recommended tool to remove the icon from the Dock (which BTW will be used for many other apps I want running but not in the Dock). Maybe you want to try uninstialling HwG and reinstalling? For me it is working flawlessly. Is there a case that makes it crash?

Oh and on another topic, the integration of Prowl with Growl, the API use, the dashboard widget and some of the other Prowl tools is just flat out amazing.

What apps are those?

(At first I thought MailPlane wasn't working with the new Growl, but I let it be for a bit, and then I saw it was working after all.)

Have just installed 1.3, but have been using 1.2 since I got my MBP in March, but I have never installed this app previous to this version, as far as I was aware the app came with my Mac, is this not correct?

Thanks, marc11, for sharing your experience. It's very helpful.

Before upgrading Growl proper to 1.3, I had run the uninstall script. I deleted my HwG installation (the app bundle and associated preference file) and re-installed it from the 1.2.2 dmg. Same issue; it crashes sporadically.

I haven't noticed a pattern to it yet; sometimes it crashed repeatedly within a short period of time, other times it goes a long interval without issue. I will see if there's any crash logs that might shed some light on the issue.

BTW, I'm on an early 2008 Santa Rosa Macbook Pro.

Prowl looks cool; can't think of an immediate need or use for it yet, but I'm pretty sure I can come up with one. :D

None of these registered themselves with Growl 1.3 when launched subsequent to the clean install of 1.3. All were previously working fine with Growl 1.2.2.

Adobe Application Manager
Delibar
Dropbox
FileChute
Hazel (update released today that fixes compatibility with Growl 1.3)
Knox
MacJournal
Skype
SnagIt
Socialite
SpamSieve
Spotify
Unison

i suppose holding off on 1.3 would be wise if 1.2.2 is working just fine.

I want my 1.99 back!

Not only does this app NOT work on my 2011 MBA running Lion, but the only app it registers is Adium.

According to Growl's website, apps that support growl should automatically register with Growl.

I've had Growl running on since I bought it on the Mac App Store. No iTunes, no Sparrow.. just adium.

And even then notifications do not appear.

I've sent a review to the Mac App Store, hopefully I'm not the only one who is having problems.

Anyone have Growl working perfect on their Lion OS?

I got excited when I saw this topic because I am still desperate for Mail.app notifications but I'm happy I had a read before downloading this junk (again). It never worked for me and I suppose it never will. I definitely won't pay for it.

Just wanted to share: a developer by the name of Perry Metzger has created a fork of 1.2.2 to fix some of the issues with Lion, including the crash in HardwareGrowler. I've been running his patched version of HwG with Growl 1.3 from the app store and it has indeed been very stable.

Look for the Growl 1.2.2f1 package on:

Didn't read the whole thread but I paid for the upgrade. I also bought Prowl and setup a few notifications. Growl becomes a lot more useful when you can get a notification on your phone. I'd be upset of app developers stopped using Growl.

Yeah, I feel as well as I would pay a buck to support the developers since its pretty awesome!

But to be honest, Apple should have this in the Mac core! ;)

GrowlTunes Functionality with 1.2.2?

Seems GrowlTunes in conjunction with 1.2.2 has not been functioning for me recently under 10.7.2, though all other notifications seem to work fine ... Is GrowlTunes work under 1.3?

Thank you for this, checking it out!

As Growl is released under a BSD license, I'm compiling my own versions from the source tree and hosting them on www.gnarl.info.

So 1.3 can currently be downloaded from gnarl.info (I think the version in their public source tree is always one version behind the current version).

Good way to get it for free (and legal as well) :)
