For F sake do read the articles once in a while before jumping the gun

No, he's saying he doesn't have to read the article. If there's a problem in the world, it's Apple's fault. Everything not only needs to be problem free for him (that goes without saying), it has to be problem free for everyone, work everywhere, and solve world hunger; else, he complains.

It's an entirely vacuous, spoiled, jaded position, exhibited too often by those who contribute least to society. Personally, I think the marginal beings who exhale these utterances are not worth bothering with; I just feel bad for you, good sir, for having such insects raise your ire.

I didn't read all 200+ posts so this might have been said, but why retailers would want to alienate Apple users is interesting to me. Study after study show that Apple users usually have more money and are more willing to spend, if I ran a business that is exactly who I would want coming to my store.

Walgreens it is...or at least some other place that accepts Apple Pay.

Someone should plan a flash mob and have lots of people go into a rite aid do some shopping and then attempt to pay with Apple Pay when it doesn't work just leave all the stuff at the counter.:D

Oh for god's sake PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS.

You really want to make iPhone users look worse in the public eye than they already do? You really want to screw over innocent checkers who have to put all of your crap back? They have nothing to do with their company's decision, why would you put them in an awkward situation?

Please use your brain...

They were working on this in secret with the banks and credit card companies for months before we heard a word about it. And many of the retail shops already have NFC capable gear and systems for use with international cards.

This rite aid thing isn't a bug. It worked and they shut it off for their own reasons

Correct, it has nothing to do with Apple Pay, everything to do with their own alternate digital payment system agenda that they are backing.

All I can say is **** the system. What we purchase and how should be freedom. Otherwise it's oligarchical fascism disguised as free market capitalism in a toy democracy. Shove your special customer membership cards and constrained and manipulative access to news and entertainment, and bandwidth itself, shove it up your ass corporate pigs. I'm done with this ******** and we all need to go on strike. Who's with me?

Doomsday prepper? This definitely sounds prepperish? Maybe you should look up some of those terms you used. None of them are applicable. ;):D:D:p:p

Not that I agree with Rite Aid's stance nor think it's smart, but it is their right to make the decision and deal with the repercussions. Whatever they may be. Unless you think they should be forced to accept Apple Pay/Google Wallet.

And most likely people that want to pay with apple pay / google wallet will just not go to Rite Aid.

A growing number of Apple Pay users are angry with retailer Rite Aid following the reported disabling of the mobile payment service within the past 24 hours. Apple Pay should technically be compatible with any point-of-sale systems supporting NFC technology, but customers who made successful Apple Pay payments earlier this week have found their payments were being denied yesterday and today.

Among the disgruntled users was Josh Hudnall, who shared his experiences and his conclusions that Rite Aid is deliberately crippling its payment systems to prevent Apple Pay transactions. Hudnall spoke to an associate who claims Rite Aid recently sent an email informing stores that the retailer is not accepting Apple Pay payments, and Hudnall speculates it is because Rite Aid is a supporter of the upcoming CurrentC payments system from Merchant Customer Exchange. Competitor Walgreens is also one of Apple's biggest launch partners for Apple Pay.

According to Twitter reports, the retailer also unexpectedly turned off support for Google Wallet at the same time. Rite Aid has not confirmed the shut down of these services, nor commented publicly on these reports.

Apple Pay launched earlier this week in a debut that was relatively smooth for most customers. As demoed in a McDonald's transaction, payments are processed almost instantly at supported terminals with the press of the Touch ID sensor on the phone.

The most publicized hiccup occurred with Bank of America customers, who were accidentally charged twice for their purchases. Bank of America confirmed that the issue only affected a small number of users who will receive refunds.

We are very happy for your black truffles -

So easy that you could do it with someone else's card.

I went to dinner at a very nice restaurant last spring with some friends. We had traveled to NYC to see some Broadway shows. After lunch we all put our cards on the table and split the ticket four ways (each of us paid about a hundred bucks--black truffles are expensive, you know). We each signed our ticket and put our cards back in our wallets.

Then we went to our shows. Three of us went to see Idina Menzel's musical IF/THEN. One went to see Les Miserables. After final bows of IF/THEN, two cast members came out to raise money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. They had an auction for a cue card with some lyrics to the song "Let It Go", that was signed by Ms. Mendel and the song's writers. The winner of the auction also got to go backstage and meet the stars of the show.

I thought it would be a cool souvenir of my trip, and it's a good cause. I participated in the auction, and I ended up being the winner. I went backstage with two of my friends, and we visited with Anthony Rapp and other cast members until Ms. Mendel was ready to go. We took some pictures, and a representative from Broadway Cares took the credit card and swiped it. Then I signed it. A few minutes later, we were back on the street (with my prize, an enormous autographed cue card), and went to meet our other friend at a cafe.

Our friend enjoyed hearing about us meeting the cast, and she asked whether I had received a receipt for the donation for my taxes. I said I had the credit card receipt, and they were going to send me an official receipt by mail. I pulled out my wallet to check the receipt was still there, and that's when I noticed that the name on the receipt was hers, not mine. I had just charged a $2000 donation to charity on my friend's credit card! We had similar cards, and we had mixed them up at lunch.

It took several days to get the charges moved to my credit card account.

So, yeah, I know how easy it is to pull a card out of your wallet and pay with it.

post this on a blog somewhere where people will appreciate your truffles and charitable donations.

I don't get the responses from some of you. Its not that Apple Pay is having problems, or they needed more time to get it ready or they needed more time to cultivate business relationships.

Rite Aid turned off Apple Pay and all competitors in order not to compete with their own preferred system. What is there to be confused about? Its like Apple pulling Bose gear out in favor of their own Beats stuff.

Corporations clearly not giving a cr@p about its customers as they play the "only MY toys are allowed" game.

Maybe this form needs joke tags, I thought the laughing face accomplished that.

i dont get it.

As a canadian, we have contactless pay systems in virtually EVERY store these days. They're everywhere. these NFC payments are just prime to be used by virtually everyone with smartphones.

Yet, Google Wallet, and Apple pay are avoiding the Canadian market like a plague. We're a prime test ground to prove how well ti all could work.

Meanwhile, you have companies like Rite Aid purposely turning it OFF! what the heck man!

Dumb move for Rite Aid. Can't imagine the benefit of doing this will be worth it.

The issue I don't believe is if it works but rather the deal they have to make with Apple because Apple wants 0.15% of every transaction that is done through Apple Pay and not every retailer is going to be on board with that.

The retailers don't care what apple gets paid because it has no impact on them. Apple is not paid by the retailers and no fees are passed to the retailers. Retailers see no difference between contact and contact-less payments.

Apple pay has nothing to do with the resellers cost. They pay their typical bank fees and processor fee's… Apple is getting their cut from that.

This is just stupid move by Rite Aid. I'm guessing they will reverse this decision within a week. They have no reason not to take other than CVS is Apple launch partner.

With all the support that ideas like that have received on early pages of this thread, I wouldn't be surprised if some people are going to do exactly this.

Can't be too careful...

I think what I find most funny about this are some of the comments that claim they'll take their business to Walgreens.

Let's say, for example, a Walgreens is further from your location than Rite-Aid. Some people here would actually be willing to spend more money on gas just so they can use their phone to pay for purchases.

I will gladly drive an extra mile or 2 knowing that my financial info will not be stored or compromised. It's not a big deal to pull out my card and swipe (it sure is nice not to have to) but I like the peace of mind that my card info will not stolen or hacked.

>because Rite Aid is a supporter of the upcoming CurrentC payments system from Merchant Customer Exchange

What I don't get is..

Why can't stores just support BOTH? Is it that hard?

My guess is that merchant fees will be less for this CurrentC system. And since businesses are all about reducing costs they jump at the lower fee.

This could however bite them in the butt. In about a year anyone not supporting NFC over swiped cards will have to take responsibility for fraud on those swipe transactions, the credit card processors will no longer insure such payments. Apple pay falls under the NFC rules but will CurrentC. And will buyers buy in or keep using this old cards.

"As all MCX members are prohibited from accepting Apple Pay, CurrentC mobile payments can have a major impact on Apple Pay."

http://mainstreetinc.net/currentc-mobile-payments-retails-alternative/

Some other MCX retailers probably didn't figure it out yet and haven't turned off the Apple Pay or NFC capability.

Sounds to me like Apple should block applications on the App store that implement this CurrentC API. They should have standing since the API replicates existing Apple API's in the iOS ecosystem.

Not sure if this is feasible as I am not a programmer or understand the legalities of the App approval process, but it could put a serious damper on the CurrentC model and block millions iOS devices from their "service"

Which is why MCX is destined to fail. No way will most people want to pull directly from their bank accounts, when a credit card doesn't do that. Moreover, MCX collects data and uses it for ads. MCX is a retailer, marketing driven, ad driven, loyalty program driven service. It ostensibly serves the customers, but in reality is set up to serve the retailers and their marketing partners. There is NO way this catches on.

excuse me, MCX have access to my checking account?.... HELL NO.... I only allow one company to draft from checking account and that was only because it was in the agreement of the car loan. I am a control freak when it comes to my money and access to it. And they can't have my data either.... for example, those store loyalty cards, I always use someone else's (many thanks to my sister and my parents). I use credit cards because I know I can dispute the charge if something fishy shows up.

Let me get this straight. RiteAid pays no more per-transaction with ApplePay than they would if I swiped my card? Is that correct?

If so, this boils down to one thing. They want to know who I am. It's none of their business who I am. This is why I like ApplePay. Tokens and no marketing data.

If you don't want my money without also creating a database entry on me, that's cool. I don't want to do business with you.
