CVS works great

They are not a partner like Walgreens but they take MasterCard Pay Pass at my local store near my office. That works fine with Apple Pay at least with my citibank mastercard. I really like it and I will shop at stores that take it. Hoping it comes to Trader Joes soon.

I've read and been told that a terminal doesn't need to have an Apple Pay sticker on it for Apple Pay to work. It just needs to have the contactless payments icon (below) to work. So...is that not actually the case?

Did you read the article? Apparently not.

$15/hr, not $15/completed transaction. Yes it would be annoying to give them a little extra work but you aren't taking money from them

It's wrong to push your personal values on an innocent checker who has nothing to do with their company's decision and who is just trying to scrape out a living. It's just plain wrong. Don't do it.

It isn't Rite Aid's problem. They don't want to pay the apple tax. You do know Apple gets a cut of every sale with apple pay, right?

You, sir, are extremely confused. RiteAid or any other business that accept apple pay don't pay a dime more than they already do to simply accept any form of debit or credit. The issuing banks are the ones who agreed to pay the .15% (15 cents for every $100).

No, they should have released it years ago. Or somebody. NFC has been available for ages, but effectively, never used in the USA.

That's why Apple didn't release it until now. Well that and getting the banks onboard.

In a year merchants are going to lose their fraud protection from the processors for swiped transactions so this is the prime time to do this. Companies are already putting in NFC over the switch so they won't feel like Apple is asking for something special to support this and so on.

funny how everyone says..

"apple fail"

give it some time! Nothing runs perfect when its first release!

Not Google
Not Microsoft
Not Apple
Not Sony
Not Samsung
and so on!

there will always be hiccups in technology! give it some time people!

Does your father sounds like a woman? you don't think women can use iPhones or talk super macho Apple tech talk?

I didn't or don't know you're a woman. My point is, it's like what my dad said when we got him an iPhone. "Why do I want e-mail on my phone when I can get it on my computer?"

Consumers have rights. If someone doesn't want to spend their money at RiteAid or other institutions that don't use Apple Pay, then so be it.

Oh yes, the internet's classic "it's my opinion so I can't be wrong". That's all well and good, but I don't think people will be putting a lot of weight to the opinions of someone who buys a super expensive phone for a feature that hasn't been demonstrated outside a keynote hall and might not ever work.

That is not what he said, he said, essentially, "It is my CHOICE, so it isn't any of your business". Big difference.

And, by the way, it works perfectly for many people, so "might not ever work" is a big huh???

ahh well there loss i guess they don't like to take NFC no matter what it is just because i won't shop there ill let my dollar to the talking

Merchants don't pay Apple's fees, the banks do.
And the banks do it because they think they'll save more money than they pay Apple, due to decreased fraud.

Online merchants will appreciate it, because the bank will charge them lower fees when the customer pays with Apple Pay.

It's wrong to push your personal values on an innocent checker who has nothing to do with their company's decision and who is just trying to scrape out a living. It's just plain wrong. Don't do it.

I fail to see how this affects the store clerk. I mean really. And how do you think the kind of change the OP is referring to actually makes it's way to the decision makers? It starts at the ground level, or the front lines--if you will.

Load up a cart at the offending (non-ApplePay) merchant and go to checkout.

When they say,

"Oh, we don't support ApplePay."

You say,

"Cancel the sale. I'll shop somewhere else."

If everyone does this, merchants will quickly get the picture and throng to get on-board.

Yeah cause that's real mature...

A growing number of Apple Pay users are angry with retailer Rite Aid following the reported disabling of the mobile payment service within the past 24 hours. Apple Pay should technically be compatible with any point-of-sale systems supporting NFC technology, but customers who made successful Apple Pay payments earlier this week have found their payments were being denied yesterday and today.

Among the disgruntled users was Josh Hudnall, who shared his experiences and his conclusions that Rite Aid is deliberately crippling its payment systems to prevent Apple Pay transactions. Hudnall spoke to an associate who claims Rite Aid recently sent an email informing stores that the retailer is not accepting Apple Pay payments, and Hudnall speculates it is because Rite Aid is a supporter of the upcoming CurrentC payments system from Merchant Customer Exchange. Competitor Walgreens is also one of Apple's biggest launch partners for Apple Pay.

According to Twitter reports, the retailer also unexpectedly turned off support for Google Wallet at the same time. Rite Aid has not confirmed the shut down of these services, nor commented publicly on these reports.

Apple Pay launched earlier this week in a debut that was relatively smooth for most customers. As demoed in a McDonald's transaction, payments are processed almost instantly at supported terminals with the press of the Touch ID sensor on the phone.

The most publicized hiccup occurred with Bank of America customers, who were accidentally charged twice for their purchases. Bank of America confirmed that the issue only affected a small number of users who will receive refunds.

I see a lawsuit brewing. Mainly because they can accept NFC payments but are choosing which one's to accept and which one's to not accept. Funny that you can use the very debit or credit card manually that you do in Apple Pay.

In any case their App from Apple will be removed asap I believe leaving only the Google Play store and android based smartphones.

It might be. But Apple won't likely do it over Apple Pay being banned. They will do it over some standard app rule like lack of a stated privacy policy, use of required encryptions, tracking locations without allowing folks to choose not to. That way they don't look petty

I don't ever really shop at Rite Aid so this won't affect me, but I don't see the logic behind this. It doesn't cost them anything, they have the hardware that supports the technology, and it's a convenience for customers. I just don't see the "win" or upside.

Lessons

So, I get two things from this article.

1 - Don't shop at Rite Aid.

2 - poster NachoGrande doesn't actually read articles before posting comments and should be ignored.

it trader joes gets an NFC machine, it should work - as long as they dont disable NFC i guess. I've used apple pay at CVS and in NYC taxi cabs that all have NFC, worked, great, love it!

I don't think MCX/CurrentC will get significant market share. What might happen though is that the fragmentation they'll cause will ensure that the US never tries NFC or any other mobile payment solution again for a very long time. Honestly, I'm not even sure NFC will take off even without their meddling; since the US is adopting chip and signature (not chip and PIN), using the physical credit card won't be much slower than it is now.

Because it's called "Apple Pay" and not "<some other name here> Pay".

I've said this 100 times before...Apple is plastering the Apple name and logo ALL OVER THIS technology/system/whatever. Apple will be pointed to for almost all blame...regardless of who's fault it REALLY is in the background...which a)most people won't wait around to find the true answer (and it still might be Apple's fault!), b)people won't care because, well, it's still a system/company that Apple chose to partner with and plaster the Apple name all over.

The ship is sinking rather fast with Apple Pay. In theory it's a nice business model. In practice, it's quickly becoming a mess.

You are a god damn funny guy.

How will Rite Aid explain to users that they are banning ALL NFC payments for a less secure way of paying and one that collects their marketing info? They will have to peddle hard when that information is spread to everyone (like now). Are you telling me THAT will be bad for Apple?

BTW, there is a reason that Apple has ONLY publicized their official partners as participating in Apple Pay? Because of bozos like Rite Aid could screw them otherwise. Best thing not disapointing your clients is not overpromising.

That the media hypes thing, which they do day and night, is not Apple's responsability at all.
