Now I really think you have absolutely no idea, what the most useful features of CarPlay are. And that's also fine. Use your car and your phone like you want.

But try to accept that some people use more features than you and don't like to add extra steps just because of some powerplay by car companies which think they can do a better UI than iOS/Android.

My dude, are you sleeping? I’ve been asking people to explain the most useful features of CarPlay… if I knew these amazing features I wouldn’t be asking.

I’ve had a number of people try to explain the best features, so far I have not heard anything that is “must have” that would cause me or anyone else to buy a car based solely on it having CarPlay or not.
 
We explained the features, which we deem important, but you dismissed them with "I have Apple Watch for that" or "I just need one more step for that".

Apparently you don't need CarPlay. And again, this is fine. Use your car like you wish to. And other will do exactly the same. I already mentioned I considered Tesla for a new car, but a major downside was this, so I got a VW Passat, which works extremely well with CarPlay.

You misread, it’s i have an Apple Watch for that AND in addition the car does it.
I’m not dismissing, I’m pointing out that It’s easy to do on a Rivian without CarPlay. You freaked out about a simple send POIs from Google Maps to car and I pointed out a concrete example of the same “one more step” situation on CarPlay. I acknowledge there are small
Inconveniences using Rivian or Tesla vs CarPlay. I also see the reverse, and you still on any traditional OEM you have to deal with the lousy oem software for non CarPlay functionality.
With ford or Toyota or Honda or VW (for the time being) you are spot on. I grant that fully. All of the big OEMs do a poor job. Where is the nuance with you position?

Also, why doesn’t Apple or google make simple APIs for the sharing of data between phone and car? Shouldn’t OEMs have access to use data for the car they make? You think Apple doesn’t advertise to you with the data they collect? You know ads are coming to maps,news etc… right?

The "vast majority of Rivian customers" are the tiniest minority of car buyers. They are more of an outlier than anything else. The only sure thing that Rivian sales statistics show is that most car buyers don't choose a Rivian. It's that simple.

And nobody's offended. It's perfectly fine that that there are people who don't consider CarPlay when making car purchase decisions. It's just mind boggling when people refuse to accept the fact that there are other people who start their car search by filtering out cars that don't offer CarPlay. Especially when the same car sale statistics show that most cars sold in the US do offer CarPlay, so it's reasonable to assume that this could have been at least one of the important factors for the buyers.

You are asking but you refuse to listen, this conversation is going in circles.

The most amazing feature of CarPlay is that it's car independent and provides the same consistent experience from one car to another, you set it up once and use it the same exact way when you switch cars with your wife, when you get a rental, when you get a dealer loaner, or when your lease expires and you get another car. No different commands to learn, no different interfaces, no different icons, no different map apps, everything is set up once and works exactly the same. I got my first vehicle with CarPlay almost ten years ago and have been using it ever since in dozens of cars and it's been the same familiar experience. And on top of that, it restricts the ability of manufacturers to spy on you or push ads and subscriptions onto you.

This may not be important to you, and I perfectly understand and respect that. But why can't you accept the fact that it's actually important to a lot of people?

I don't think they are offended at all. They are trying to explain why they're not interested in it. I am one of them.

I don't care how much better the UX is. I change cars all the time. We have two cars in the family that we buy to perform specific tasks and complement each other, so we drive different cars on different days depending on who is going to do what that day. Which was especially true when kids were still too young to drive. I also travel a lot for work and rent a new car almost every week. I believe I had 37 rentals last year. CarPlay is doing everything I want it to do and I am absolutely not interested in having a car with a completely different experience that I have to learn, especially now that practically every state has handsfree laws.

Before CarPlay it was a royal PITA. Our two family cars had "state of the art" infotainment systems with completely different interfaces and voice commands and it was an absolute **** show trying to map a route or place a call in a hurry and having to remember that Infiniti does it in a completely different way from the truck.

So yes, I am pretty sure that some car companies can design better UX, but I am not going to give up my ease of use and I am not ever going to consider a car without CarPlay as long as my lifestyle doesn't change to where I know that I will be only driving one car for years.

The point isn’t do people want CarPlay, it’s “why do people think they want CarPlay?” You think they want CarPlay because it interfaces with some niche apps, or random niche use cases. I suggest that most people just want good software (which Tesla and Rivian offer).

I have granted that CarPlay offers a great improvement over most OEM software, you still seem stuck on “CarPlay or nothing”. Which is a strange position to hold. Do you want functionality or is carplay branding the important thing?

No, I don’t, you’re putting your words in my mouth. Please quote any of my posts where I said that people want CarPlay “because it interfaces with some niche apps, or random niche use cases.”

People want CarPlay because it provides a consistent UI and UX that is car-independent and resides on a device that is always with them, they set it up once and that’s it. Doesn’t matter whether I have a new lease, new rental, switching cars with family members, getting a dealership loaner, it’s the same interface, same data, same apps, same voice commands.

An added bonus is that it limits the vehicle manufacturer’s ability to spy on me, feed me ads, or force me into subscriptions.

“Niche apps and niche use cases” far better describes OEM’s in-house software, that can only be used in that specific vehicle.

A fun thought experiement: imagine how much better the legacy automakers native UI could be if they hadn't spent the last 10 years lazily outsourcing that to Apple

Thought experiment. What is apples main business? There’s a reason why car makers UI lags.

Dude all the use cases for CarPlay have been POI on maps, using a different audio streaming service than the most popular ones, Or other things that are totally doable without CarPlay.

Frankly I don’t like the app grid on iPhones, don’t need it on my car. Why does my car need the same UI as my phone? Do you think the iPhone UI should also be used on your toaster or lawn mower?

People like liquid ass so much that they are already starting to remove it now that Alan Dye is finally gone.

And come on, Apple Music app is a pile of crap, even if you like the service. It’s even worse on the Mac.
